We accept that Democrats take a position of middle ground in order not to scare away voters. Supporters of gay rights accept this as a pragmatic way to bring about gradual change. Maybe it's not strictly right in principle but it's realistic. Those same supporters don't give a shit about who wins Miss America. It doesn't make a difference one way or the other. If she's going to be equivocal on gay rights, we're going to ditch the bitch and no harm's done. Well the difference lies in the arena.
