It reminds me of how the Supreme Ayatollah (oops, I mean President!) commands that "all you religious conservatives in the medical industry can just do what you want, because ur making such a loud racket about everything. So, we'll make an exception for how YOU treat patients... umm, fags? abortion? contraceptives? aww shucks, just treat who you want, or dont want... *winks* *hugs* there! all fixed now! " SickUhhNinnng...

Excellent, Wayne! Very well put. And I can relate fully to what you've said because it reminds me so vividly of the conflict that I went through during my own teenage years and early twenties. I now feel very angry and resentful when I reflect on the way that those years were stolen from me, so I avoid thinking about it too often. I suppose that I can just about forgive it now, albeit with great difficulty, on the grounds that it was done through ignorance and stupidity rather than deliberate malice, but I can't take a tolerant view of those obscurantists who want to keep on doing it.

The Dutch Reformed theologian Harry Kuitert summed it up neatly when he wrote:

"Christianity will have its own ideas about what people need to be or do, but these must remain in the realm of what a human being – seen as a phenomenon – is and can do. You can't get blood out of a stone, and for most people celibacy is an impossible task and therefore an improper demand."

Unfortunately, Warren Throckmorton is unlikely to do anything to help gay men express both their faith and their orientation.

But there are many reputable mainstream therapists, clergy, and support groups that do.

Most Christian denominations, for example, have gay-affirming support groups. Some denominations or portions thereof are openly affirming.

The APA report released yesterday encourages therapists to help patients find gay-affirming places of worship if they decide that celibacy is not right for them. It's unfortunate that both the Journal and Throckmorton concealed that emphasis of the report and reinforced the lie that one must choose between faith and sexual honesty.

I notice that there is no effort being made to help gay men live with their faith and being gay. As a Christian gay man, I can tell you it is possible. Why are Christians being told the only option is either/or? Yes, religion certainly can limit our sexual activity to a monogamous relationship (as it does also for heterosexuals), but it doesn't have to take away our human need for affection, love and physical contact. If they want the right to counsel clients to choose God or one's God-given sexual orientation, then we should also demand the right to incorporate both in treatment.
