The antigay National Organization for [Heterosexual-Only] Marriage is being persecuted by homosexuals, and NOM wants you to know it — because you’re next.

Tim Hortons and Blount Fine Foods were misled about the full purpose of NOM’s antigay cookout and rally in Warwick, R.I. on Aug. 16. When the companies were contacted by thousands of alarmed consumers, the companies revoked their sponsorships.

NOM was going to charge adult diners $10 and kids $8 to eat donated food. Now food may have to be purchased by NOM.

As a result of Tim Hortons’ decision, NOM Rhode Island organizer Christopher Plante tells Xtra.ca that coffee will no longer be served at this weekend’s event. “Time is of the essence,” he says. “Finding another sponsoring vendor is out of the question.” The rally also may be unable to serve Blount’s donated New England chowders.

No free coffee. No free soup. If that’s not life-threatening persecution, what is?

“It’s stressful, it’s sorrowful, it’s saddening,” Plante told The Advocate. “The marriage equality folks are making this a boycott threat. That’s sad. It has become our job now to remind Rhode Islanders that this is what’s to come.”

Wow. Are you as afraid of the future as we and Christopher are?

“This is not about Tim Hortons,” Plante told Xtra.ca. “This is about the organized approach to squash all private and public comments on marriage.” Take that, you… umm… no-good, anti-coffee, marriage-loving-gay-couples!

The NOM rally included Christian singers and a worship service, and its marriage ceremony was to exclude LGBT couples. Nevertheless, Plante maintains that the rally was apolitical and non-religious — and therefore worthy of the food companies’ sponsorship.

That sounds reasonable: When was the last time a conservative worship service and Christian concert were considered “religious”?

  1. When was the last time a conservative worship service and Christian concert were considered “religious”?

Yeah, this was a “secular” event if one ever existed.

  2. He was right about one thing. This was NOT about TH. This was and still about the disingenuous tactics this organization takes to get people to sign onto their hate campaign.

That and the only way they are able to get businesses to sign onto their hate campaign is to lie and mislead them.

Great job again Michael. Since they have “invited” gay couples to the event, would a gay kiss-in be in order?

  3. “squash all private and public comments on marriage”

Um, no. You event is going ahead, you’re all free to talk publicly and privately however you want. I certainly don’t disagree you have the right.

This was about exercising our own right to tell companies that sponsor events aimed at limiting our rights, that they can forgot about profiting from our community in the future.

It’s absurd to suggest the GBLT community is obliged to buy the products of companies that funnel the profits into fighting our quest for equality.

Tim’s and Blount were free to sponsor the event.

Tim’s and Blount chose no to.

  4. You all just don’t get it.

The good secular humanists of NOM are under attack from religious homosexual theocrats.

    Get a clue!

  5. The Providence Equality Action Committee is considering what to do in Warwick on Sunday.

There is an unrelated kiss-in scheduled in Boston (an hour’s drive from Providence/Warwick) on Saturday.

  6. I would so crash Maggie’s Party to join a kiss-in, if I weren’t trapped in NYC this weekend.

  9. It’s a shame that the child was in the wilderness for so long that he or she didn’t research the entire situation. This is what it is said on the site:

“These blogs claim that Blount and Tim Horton’ were misled when they first agreed to sponsor the event. That is absurd. When the National Organization of Marriage approaches you to sponsor an event, it takes less than 5 seconds on Google to figure what this group is about.”

So according to the Wilderness Person, if NOM misled Tim Blount, then it’s Tim Blount’s fault rather than NOM for misleading him.

That’s the type of bizarre logic we are dealing with when it comes to these so-called “protect marriage” types.

  10. LMAO, I have to say no one deserves it better than this group- what nerve to first LIE ( so I guess these particular “Christians” have no problem with lying- odd, I thought it was a sin?!) and then EXPECT that these two orgs. would provide free food for them to in turn charge for the food to their members, so they can plow the proceeds into more hate rhetoric? I think this is a pretty good indication of just how hypocritical NOM is- Christian? Not according to MY Bible! I guess they only use the parts that suit their agenda of spreading lies, fear, and hate (Gee, sounds like Neo-Nazis to me! The “religious” “right” is NEITHER! Kudos to Tom Hortons and Blounts!
