We are now seeing that the idea of a black president seems to drive some white folks crazy.
In comparison, the quickest way to drive the black community nuts is to mention the subject of the lgbt community.
African-American gospel singer Tonex recently became the first black gospel singer to come out publicly.
Granted, he is not the first African-American gay gospel singer (i.e. James Cleveland and others), but he is the first to have the guts to be honest about his sexual orientation.
These are his words in an exclusive interview with Black Voices:
I’m studying daily on the subject of same-sex matters. I’m tired of echoing what I’ve been told. I want to know for myself the true interpretation of scriptures in Biblical text and well as scientific documentation.
You know, it’s not easy growing up in a Pentecostal/Evangelical church, where everyone is pretty much anti-gay, although it’s common knowledge that some of the most anointed musicians and singer-songwriters have, or have dealt with, same-sex attraction at some point. For me, it was particularly taboo because of my upbringing and the ministerial call on my life. I then had to think about the repercussions of this revelation. But I knew I had to get free.
… There was so much more in that interview that I thought was, unfortunately, overlooked. So much more to my story then the sexuality part, but most church folks are sexually repressed anyway, so they naturally gravitate right toward that type of subject matter. I noticed parts one and three weren’t juicy enough for the church or the public, yet they were the key to the whole puzzle. I talked about my same-sex attraction. I don’t think that there was any new information here. I’ve addressed this issue in my music for years. But for many, I guess, it was a shock of sorts. But believe me, it wasn’t for shock value. The real story is not cute, ladies and gentlemen. Freedom, my friends, is not for cowards.
There is a sad part to this entire situation as far as I am concerned. Tonex says that 96 percent of the responses he received have been positive. That enough confirms a belief I’ve had about the black community.
Approval or disapproval of gays and lesbians in the black community is far more complex than folks realize.
The simplistic belief that the black community automatically does not approve of homosexuality is driven by three factors:
- The religious right’s eagerness to exploit the ignorance of the African-American community regarding its lgbt members.
- The cowardice of influential black leaders who tackle the issue with the force of a baby licking the tip of icing off of a cake.
- And the self absorption of the lgbt community at large which refuses to acknowledge that the lgbt struggle for self-determination is present in some form or another in every ethnic group, every culture, and every country.
It’s a question that deserves far more attention than it is getting (hello Advocate magazine!).
However, I know that waiting for a major lgbt magazine to do a serious story on gay issues in the black community is like waiting for BET or Ebony or Jet to do a serious story on the issue.
I’ll probably be waiting so long for this to happen that my credit will become good.
Still, Tonex should be commended for his pioneering step. It’s not his fault that both of his communities are way behind on the issue.

i am soo glad to see this. as a christian artist (who is gay and “out”) in ministry. this is good.
As I struggle with accepting my sexuality its comforting to hear that I am no different than anyone else.
I am glad he told the truth and I love him but the hate sin; it’s an abomination and I pray the Lord will open his eyes before it’s too late.
SOG, false piety is not especially welcome here. You choose to serve yourself and the cause of social ostracism. Don’t blame God for your choices.
You pray to a god of dishonesty and exclusion — in other words, the god that you worship seems to be you. Not the Christian god.
God does not allow homosexuals in his kingdom…1 Corithians 6:9 says neither the effiminate (amongst other sinners) will NOT INHERIT the kingdom of GOD. Do people not realize this is a demon spirit on you. God did not make you for you to be attracted to same sexed people. It is a sin and a spirit Satan has put on this Earth. Romans 1 speaks of men (and women) burning in their lusts for the same sex. Also the old testament says its abominable. People are not reading their bibles and going off their own desires. Whats worse, homosexuals feel like they can be gay and be in ministry and that is simply wickedness at its worse. What i STRONGLY suggest is those on this forum who are gay to get prayed over by someone who is spiritually intune with God, and also to annoint your head and chase that demon off you. Its not you, its a spirit, but the snpirit will cause YOU not to inherit eternal life. Wake o Zion.
Most boring and redundant comment ever, which is basically the same as a hundred other comments from a hundred other intellectually retarded, brainwashed fools?
Yep.
“Corithians 6:9 says neither the effiminate (amongst other sinners) will NOT INHERIT the kingdom of GOD.”
So feminine women aren’t allowed in Heaven? Harsh, bro.
I like how bigots think the only gay people who exist are effeminate men. Just more proof that homophobia is rooted in misogyny and sexism.
Makyui, Wake is also assuming that 1) all gay men are effeminate and 2) that no straight man is effeminate.
And, btw, Wake, the King James Bible you are quoting from…it is a well-established fact that King James was living what homophobes would today call a “homosexual lifestyle”. Since the religious right states nothing good can EVER come from homosexuality, isn’t it being hypocritical to be using a Bible whose translation was sponsored and paid for by a homosexual?
I copied this directly from an online King James Bible.
“27: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.” Romans 1:27
Everyone please notice that it says that the men leave “THE NATURAL USE OF THE WOMAN”. Specifically note that “THE NATURAL USE OF THE WOMAN” is singular. I want to know how many of the christian women would agree and accept that the SINGLE/ONLY god/bible proscribes use for them is to spread their legs for men. Seems to me that porn actresses and sex workers are the women fulfilling their god specified roles.
I feel bad for fundies. Which is really short for “fun dies”. These people worry about hell, but turn life on earth into hell. They are boring, miserable, angry busybodies who obsess about blood, war, and harming other people.
They seem not to notice the more fundamentalist a nation is, the more backward, illiterate and awful the place is. Fundamentalism dooms nations and civilization itself. So, why are these barbarians on here preaching such lies? They have nothing to offer but sub par, paranoid, miserable lives.
No thanks.
Servant of God and Wake O Zion, have you two considered getting psychiatric help? In both your cases I really think it could help you both greatly.
There’s a wonderful drug called thorazine that would be terrific for you both. If you’re not into helping yourselves via that route though, then maybe you could go back to school and help yourselves by obtaining more education. Education can really solve a lot of problems in life, and I suspect it would work wonders on your internalized pain which must really be awful to have to life with. I can see your internal pain come through in your posts and it must be miserable living a life that’s virtually the same as those in the Taliban and Al Qaeda, except for the religion being different.
I realize you have a hard time accepting this, but much as you’d like, this isn’t the year 1500 or even 1500 BC. The world has moved on and your beliefs are really nothing more than a modern-day anachronism. Both psychiatric help and going back to school would help you to eventually accept this fact, and you might find that additional schooling would not only increase your knowledge but might help you in being able to give up your superstitions and childish beliefs as well. Even better, a higher level of education almost always correlates with higher incomes. Wouldn’t that be nice to have more money? Why just think… going back to school for a few years to obtain your high school diplomas would not only help you in being able to function better in the modern world (where we rely more on science rather than old wives tales and superstitions), but it might actually mean more money for you too.
What Wayne Besen said in #11 really is true: Fundamentalism dooms nations and civilization itself. Just look at Iran and what it’s turned into since the 1979 revolution. If you knew what it was like there before the fundies took over in ’79, you’d see how completely and utterly destructive fundamentalism is to society, cultures, and all aspects of a nation. So if you aren’t willing to grow and give up your outdated beliefs for your own selves, then perhaps there’s a bit of goodness in you that’ll let you give up your old superstitions for the betterment of all society rather than allowing it to go the other way like Iran unfortunately did.
It is a good thing that there are those anointed to sing the gospel of love in song to the world and still not be ashamed of who they are in the public eyes. I pray for Tonex and all those that have decided to ” Come Out ” and say WE are no longer going to be afraid. Jesus loves us just the same. God Bless you my brother
I love how people act like this dude chooses to be gay. I’m a straight man, and fortunately I have the gift of common sense unlike a lot of folks who have Bible and Jesus fetishes. No truly straight man can be taught to be attracted to a man. If that’s the case, that means every straight man can be convinced to be gay. And as a straight man myself, I can tell you no level of indoctrination is gonna make that happen. I hate the self-righteousness of know-it-alls when it comes to religion, who think b/c they can recite a scripture that it means they have wisdom. Sorry, you can train a low IQ chimp to repeat an action. It means nothing. The hatemongering among the black community when it comes to gays is the abomination
I hate the dialogue going round din circles. We condemn SIN and Pray for those that Sin, whether they can control it or not. I mean a serial killer comes out to say I am a serial killer do we praise Him?, An adulterer comes out to say I am one do we Admonish the person?. Lets face facts we are all Sinners and have sinned one way or another, I particularly sympathies with Gospel Musicians and Christians that find themselves being Gay, truly I do becos I wont know how I would feel If I was one, but Its a SIN lets just pray and be free. We cant keep leaving in SIN, just becos we feel we cant do anything about it. I mean I fornicate and still do, If I come out to say it will people clap for me, I dont expect such, but for a long while I could not control myself, I had to seek prayer and have faith that i will be healed, I even thought at some point I was born like that, but truth be told I saw in my bible it is wrong and I have been praying and hoping that I stop. And I know I will one day, so I encourage my gay gospel brothers and lesbian sisters to also seek the truth and pray that God helps them out of the grave situation they find themselves.
Just Asking:
You were a superior human being as a fornicator. Now you are just a boring, preachy, brainwashed, run of the mill religious fanatic. Go out and get laid and think for yourself. You were so much better off than you are now in your sad, dour lifestyle.
Just Asking,
You are a SIN (Sanctimonious Ignorant Nincompoop).
“I was born like that, but truth be told I saw in my bible it is wrong and I have been praying and hoping that I stop”
Oh lord, please help me to stop being such a vile sinner…
But not just yet.
I’m so sorry for him and all of us, his fans. I’d rather make Tonex angry than make the Lord angry with me. I live for him, not Tonex and Tonex didn’t get it right. When you go against the word of God and decide to go your own way, you’re saying that the Lord didn’t get it right, I got it right. And I haven’t even dealt with the fornication issue. I was wrong when I fonicated, but realized through God’s word that there was a higher calling on my life. Too bad, I loved his music, and I still love him, I just don’t love/like what he does.
Van50: what evidence do you have that your ancient hodge-podge book of bronze-age stories is “the word of God”? Please enlighten us! Show us WHERE in your bible there is any evidence of an omniscient, omnipotent or omni-benevelont Deity. Your buybull is an inconsistent, contradictory hodge-podge of pseudo-history, story, fantasy and moralisms cobbled together between approximately 1000 BC to 100 AD. Its pathetic that your divine Yahweh (a war god kinda like Mars) couldn’t come up with something a little more sophisticated to communicate with the billions of people on planet earth who aren’t willing to drink the same Kool Aid you did.
Van50 said “When you go against the word of God and decide to go your own way, you’re saying that the Lord didn’t get it right”.
Exactly. The bronze age sheep hearders pretending to speak for an imaginary god definitely didn’t get it right.
Van50 said “When you go against the word of God and decide to go your own way, you’re saying that the Lord didn’t get it right”.
Like when you are busy judging people for their sins long before you have finished dealing with your own. Except that you don’t call it judging, you call it reporting the word o’ god.
I have no problem believing god got it rights. It’s his fallible, judgmental, sinning followers that I’m concerned about.
Everybody will eventually die and your final destination (heaven or hell) will be detemined how you served God. Those who serve sin and let flesh be satisfied will not see Jesus in peace. Singing gospel or teaching the word of God is all for nothing if your heart is not right with God. (John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.) (Luke 12:47 And that servant, which knew his lord’s will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.) Tonex Do not play with God. I share this with love for you and all who are lost. God loves you too and wants you be saved from a burning hell.
If the NOMbies are god’s chosen ones and are going to heaven, I suspect I’d prefer hell. The company’s probably better.
Also, isn’t “I’m praying for you to accept god’s love” just about the most condescending statement ever?
What some of my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ need to realize is there is no one way to read scripture. We often unconsciously read our cultural and experiential perceptions into things to make it say what we already agree with. If you don’t think so, I’ll provide examples. Once upon a time, many people were sure the bible said it was OK to enslave Africans because they were cursed. Even to this day, some still believe women have no business in a pulpit. We privilege some portions of scripture over others depending on our own attitudes towards an issue. Some things we ignore, while others we uphold as essential to being “Christian.” If you disagree, when is the last time you dragged an adulterer out to the street and stoned her (because the woman was always accused of seducing the guy) to death?
