That’s what they want, but it won’t happen under federal law unless they perpetrate felony violence against somebody.

So instead they’ll get themselves arrested on ordinary disorderly-conduct charges and lie and say it was a hate-crime charge.

Or they’ll get themselves arrested on some local hate-crime charge and say it somehow means that all hate-crime laws are the same.

Let’s not kid ourselves.

The Religious Right’s next move will be to get someone arrested, better still convicted, on a hate crimes charge for ’simply practising their freedom of religion’ and preaching against homosexuality. They won’t stop until they manage to get this done.

Erik Stanley, senior legal counsel with the Alliance Defense Fund, said all victims deserve equal justice.

Should we then also consider first, second, third degree murder, manslaughter and negligent homicide to deserve “equal” justice? After all, they all result in death.

Exodus International spokesman Randy Thomas has repeatedly insisted that the punishment of felony violence against LGBT people amounts to punishment of “thought crime.”

All of those delineations take into account the motive, or “thought” behind the crime. Would Randy Thomas (et al), really have us believe that there is no distinction between a death that was methodically planned out, and one that was not intended?

One of the men pictured is from my state, Alabama. Billy Jack Gaither’s death just a few years after I came out, but it was at a memorial service in Birmingham where I was first exposed to the hatred of the religious right.

We will be protesting Focus on the Family when they come to Birmingham.
