Evangelical pastor Rick Warren’s plea for donations to fill a $900,000 deficit at his Southern California megachurch brought in $2.4 million, Warren announced to cheers during a sermon at the church on Saturday.
Warren said the amount raised after the appeal was posted online Wednesday included only money parishioners brought in person to Saddleback Church by New Year’s Eve. More was arriving by hand and by mail, he said.
“This is pretty amazing,” said Warren, who made the announcement by bringing out 24 volunteers each holding a sign for $100,000. “I don’t think any church has gotten a cash offering like that off a letter.”
Okay, I’m officially jealous. I’ve posted pleas for financial help so Truth Wins Out can fight the Religious Right and the Ex-Gay Industry. Needless to say, we have not come close to Warren’s impressive numbers.
If you appreciate the work of Truth Wins Out and admire our efforts – then please step up and make a tax-deductible contribution today. The only way we can compete with the Rick Warren crowd is through your generous help. If you can give $1,000 – please do so. If $15 is what you are able to give, this will also benefit our work.
You know you have thought about making a contribution many times before. Now is the time to take the next step by investing in the crucial work of Truth Wins Out.

We haven’t gotten anywhere near that because we don’t fleece people. I mean, Rick Warren acknowledged that they ran short because of the economy, and then he went back to the trough.
To me it says that this President and his Administration must be doing something right. If Warren’s cult followers can be at least 10% out of work, not able to give and then all of a sudden it’s a MIRACLE and they cough up a minimum of 2.4 MILLION….
Tells me God thinks this President is doing a good job that he has blessed the Warren Cult in being able to give.
They couldn’t have done that under Bush….
I’m just sayin’…..
Heh.
Dan, did you see the WaPo article that showed that the ’00s were a “lost decade” when it comes to job growth and wages?
Hasn’t happened since the Great Depression.
Bushonomics sucks.

Definitely, some kind of a miracle is required for so many people to be so gullible! The Rick Warren appeal reminds me of a track by rock band Genesis, about 18 years ago, which lampooned such holy pickpockets….

I love that song.
I guess this is his share of the change Obama was promising.
Was there ever any doubt of the outcome? I think this ploy is used often. I don’t think for a moment that anti-gay activist Warren needed the money any more than any of the other Pharisees need the money. The numbers are all made up, before and after the plea, and the only purpose is to make the money grubbing Pharisee appear to have been the beneficiary of a miracle. If God wanted to provide a miracle to militant anti-gay activist Warren, He did not need this publicity stunt in order to do it.
This was even reported in the South African press. The local Vatican-esque monolith in Pretoria does exactly the same, I wonder if they take classes…
Actually, if you lot don’t immediately send me $900K I will also be $900K under budget.

Grantdale, we have raised our commission to 35 percent.
We now have a tower and resort in Dubai to finance. If we don’t pay the bill by Monday, militant Buddhist golfers will destroy us.
I want some munnie$$ too!
I’m glad to see you have a great property portfolio – one has to be circumspect in these times ;)
