Good news from across the pond! Even though Portugal is mostly Catholic, they somehow understand the separation of church and state better than we do:
LISBON, Portugal ‚Äî Portugal’s parliament passed a bill Friday that would make the predominantly Catholic nation the sixth in Europe to permit gay marriage.
Conservative President Anibal Cavaco Silva is thought unlikely to veto the Socialist government’s bill, which won the support of all left-of-center parties. His ratification would allow the first gay marriage ceremonies to take place in April ‚Äî a month before Pope Benedict XVI is due on an official visit to Portugal.
The Iberian peninsula is now a full equality zone. Awesome.

Well done, Portugal. What an embarrassment for the U.S. Portugal has finally debunked the myth about the U.S. being the leader on social issues. It never was and never will be. This is one that Maggie Gallagher can’t do a thing about. Sweet revenge across the pond! Another blow for catholicism too.
No word on whether or not Maggie is currently paddling a raft across the Atlantic Ocean, though.
If she washed up on the shore, Portugal, DON’T LET HER IN.
