Iris Robsinon is a 60-year old lawmaker and the wife of Peter Robinson, a powerful politician in Ireland. The New York Times describes Iris as “stridently moralistic”. She once reportedly said, “There can be no viler act, apart from homosexuality and sodomy, than sexually abusing children.”
Ironically, The New York Times reports that she was cheating on her husband with a 19-year old lad. Her dalliance may bring down her husband’s government and severely compromise the peace process with largely Catholic southern Ireland.
It has come to the point where anyone who presents themselves as a standard-barer for values should be looked with an eye of suspicion. Indeed, we could call it “moral profiling”, because normal people in healthy relationships do not feel the need to scream to the world, “look how pure and righteous I am.”
Chalk this one up to another right wing hypocrite exposed. Unfortunately, this news bombshell may actually lead to the detonation of real bombs in the future. Given the high stakes and that peace was on the line, the irresponsible actions of Mrs. Robinson are particularly selfish and immoral.

Also, I believe she was schtupping the guy’s Dad too.
Everytime I read stories like this I am reminded of Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, Ted Haggard and the like, and their sexual sins committed in private, while in public they were saying “this is sin!!!”
“…..It has come to the point where anyone who presents themselves as a standard-barer for values should be looked with an eye of suspicion. Seemingly, they just don’t know the damage they REALLY do in their own misdeeds and how much they truly lead the faithful into despair and dismay.
“Sexual sin? Homosexuals? Oh my God! We don’t have any
“those” people here!!!”
Oh really? Where do they live? Mars?
It’s a storyline that makes Dynasty sound like the Waltons.

The comments about homosexuality were made on a radio show, after news of a gay guy being beaten up. She said on air that she knew a good psychiatrist to help that person out of homosexuality. Soon after he resigned. Though many in the DUP have made similar comments in the past, Iris Robinson’s were the first which attracted a wave of condemnation and ridicule.
Even before this, The Robinsons were already having to face questions in the MP-expenses scandal (£150,000 for relatives whom they employed, not to mention combined earnings of £500,000).
Another worry is that the new political hardline party, Traditional Unionist Voice, could benefit (they are even more cracked than the DUP) who broke away when the DUP started working with Sinn Fein. Heaven help Northern Ireland if they do. The general elections in the UK are likely to be in May……
Every time I read stories like this, I am reminded of Bill Clinton, except, oh yeah, he was the president, not a member of congress or just a high ranking politician.
It would be great if we could get some unbiased reporting here.
Steve Carter, to my knowledge, Bill Clinton in no way claimed to be a moral peon of the nation. Nor did anyone claim he was, since cracks in his marriage appeared before he became president. I doubt people elected him because they thought he was going to “clean up” and “moralize” the white house. That was the reason why people elected GW Bush the following term. Look how that turned out: An entire political party brand is in ruins.
Yeah, Steve, you’re sort of missing the entire point.
People on the liberal side of the spectrum don’t tend to react with high pitched shock at other people’s sexual indiscretions, mostly because it isn’t any of our business.
But when they’ve spent great amounts of time spreading bigotry toward gay people, who aren’t hurting ANYONE, and then are found to be either gay themselves, or banging 19 year old boys on the side, then yeah, it’s time to POINT and LAUGH and make sure as many people as possible know what pathetic hypocrites they are.
Also? The Bill Clinton story happened, almost fifteen years ago now. Get a new wingnut talking point.
I wonder how all the wingnuts in this country like Rush, Hannity and mANN Coulter are going too spin this?
I am savouring the irony and schadenfreude of the entire mess. It seems as if people like Iris Robinson are carrying on and on about homosexuality and other moral issues to deflect attention from their own screwed-up lives and perhaps subconsciously make up for what they lack in themselves. It’s called projection.
Yes, maybe you’re right Merlyn – they know they’re behaving immorally so they have to attack gays as immoral so they can pretend they’re better than someone else.
