In my view, neither the current Pope nor the previous one has pressured the U.S. pro-life movement -- much of which is Catholic -- to take an emphatic stand against the death penalty.

That movement continues to defend the death penalty in states where it exists. It also opposes every serious effort to address any other life issues, such as global warming, debt, health care reform, pollution, torture, and gross overconsumption and waste of resources.

Perhaps he should consider changing his name. I suggest Pope Pontius I.

Even Rick Warren appears to have a sense of shame. This guy does not. And I have sinking feeling we're going to see at least a couple more Popes in BXIV's mold -- his predecessor did such a good job of stacking the college of cardinals with youngish social conservatives.

At the risk of being considered a defender of the current Pope, I would point out that the current Catholic Church has been consistently both anti-abortion and anti-death penalty for decades at least. So, when the Pope refers to the sacred right to life, his comments aren't limited to abortion and the Catholic Church could not support the death penalty provisions of the Uganda Kill the Gays Bill (just as they don't support the death penalty for murder, rape, crimes against humanity, torture, treason or any other crime).

That being said, he should have directly addressed this vile piece of legislation and condemned the thing in its' entirety. I am no fan of the current Pope (or the one before him for that matter). My sister laughs when I refer to him as Ratzinger. I generally can't bring myself to call him Pope Benedict. I just feel like that would be legitimizing him on my part.

"Religious freedom" is an amorphous term the RRRW uses to excuse any manner of abuse they wish to engage in against others. Needless to say "religious freedom" doesn't apply to anybody else, unless that somebody else can be a tool to them for a period of time. After those individuals stop being useful fools they're dropped like hot potatoes and are enemies to be assimilated or eradicated, once again.

It's too bad something our Founding Fathers intended for good has become a weapon in the hands of many.
