That’s gotta twist the knife for social conservatives.

Not only does she express support for equality, but she even acknowledges the actuarial elephant in the room: the major remaining steam in the movement to deny LGBT people equal rights is among the elderly and soon-to-be elderly. Younger voters, on both sides of the aisle, are just fine with equality. In fact, they think it’s dandy.

  1. I’m trying very hard to understand if this matters. Mrs. McCain, her daughter Megan and now Laura Bush…but their husbands are the very men who (other than Bill Clinton) have done more to harm gay marriage than anyone! Does this not still fit into the “Conservative” (see Repressionist) mindset of women don’t matter? When they sit at the sidelines and say nothing while their husbands architect our destruction, now what? Ricky Martin, Elton John, etc…they have A LOT to make up for, and they are. But it takes only one beautiful ex-beauty queen (Palin) to rally the straight males against us. I mean, is it just me or do I see a room filled with LGBT sitting in silence as she makes this announcement. No boos. No applause. Just… so what. How does that help? You believe but you have done nothing? Christians have a few words about people like that.

  2. President Bush has soooo much to be responsible for in terms of the bad faith and blood letting he spread throughout the World…seeing Laura Bush talk about the REALITY of TRUTH vs. Fear-Hatemongering in regard to ABUSED/EXPLOITED, by BUSH, LGBT Citizens leaves me cold…this hide-sighted ¬®peace making¬® balloon reeks of shame, guilt and hot air…poised to look decent/sane means nothing. THE WORLD AWAITS G.W. BUSH¬¥S HUMBLE APOLOGY and PLEE FOR FORGIVENESS.

  3. I’m so glad to hear this. The sad thing is that the angry whining Gay Left (Michelangelo Signorile and that sad ilk) will still bash her because she does not advocate a socialist agenda, welfare state, racial quotas, etc. we should encourage those who shows signs of support for our community, not belittle them or trash them because of their spouses or because of their political party affiliation.
    Kudos to Mrs. Bush!

  4. A little late in the game, but better than never. Now lets hear it from Hillary! Well done, Laura Bush!

  5. I think this is great. When combined with support from Cindy McCain, it gives permission to mainstream Republican women to openly support equality.

Laura should not be faulted for not doing this sooner. As the president’s spouse, she is there to support him in the most difficult job in the world. It is George W. Bush and Karl Rove who should be faulted for using homophobia as a wedge issue when it was politically convenient.

Let’s just enjoy Laura’s support and realize that this, when combined with other recent successes, is what progress looks like.

  6. Ummm I think the ‘angry’ right WHINES more about everything and anything like whether Obama wears a freakin label pin than the Left does!!!!!!!! I heard Signorile on this issue (and others) and I think he tries to be relatively fair. And make up your mind, is our ‘ilk’ sad or angry!?
