And country #10 where gay marriage is possible.
Gay marriage also is legal in Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Mexico City, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington, D.C.
In Portugal, you can launch the process and get married the same day – “in fact, in less than 60 minutes,” says my local correspondent, who will cover tomorrow’s wedding of Teresa Pires and Helena Paix?£o, who lost a same-sex marriage case before Portugal’s Constitutional Court last July.

Another ‘tradionally Roman Catholic’ country tells the pope and the vatican to fk off! Kudos to Portugal. Another civilized country puts the US to shame.
Being of Portuguese descent, living in Massachusetts, and being gay, I am proud to consider this a victory for equal rights throughout the world. Of course we have a long way to go in our struggle, but this is encouraging news.
Congratulations to Helena and Teresa and to all gay couples in Portugal wishing to marry! Thanks to those who fought and continue to fight for LGBT rights in Portugal and in the World!
As for the Church’s statists…well they are just that… statistcs. Like myselft millions of Portuguese are “Catholics” only by name… and only because we have been unfortunate enough to have been baptised! Annuling this is a bureaucrat process with the Church. This explains a few facts about comtemporary Portugal: less than 20% of Portuguese are practicing Catholics; more than half of all marriages are civil weddings, liberal divorce laws (on demand by just one of the spouses); over a third or child births are outside wedlock, abortion is legal since 2007…just to mention a few! It is far from being a perfect society, but this is a step in the right direction! Adoption by same sex couples will be a matter of time. Congrats again to Portugal!
