Charred remnants remained this morning, June 15, of the large Jesus statue iconic to Interstate 75 that was destroyed following an apparent lightning strike during a thunderstorm late Monday night. The Lawrence Bishop Music Theater at Solid Rock Church on Union Road endured smoke damage, according to officials. Damages to the King of Kings statue and the theater were estimated to be around $700,000, said Monroe Fire Chief Mark Neu.

With southwest Ohio in economic dire straits, I hope that the church invests insurers’ compensation in programs to educate the jobless and foster local small enterprise.
The last thing Ohio needs is another Tower of Babel.
Thank you Father for destroying that hideous and wasteful idol
Jesus or not, as an artist, it’s kind of sad to see someone’s artwork go up in flames.
But I second Airhart; I hope any insurance money goes to some good and not to fund another honking huge statue.
So, this is what Conservative Elitist want to spend all of our taxpayers’ money on.
They’re planning on rebuilding the statue unless it rises from the ashes tomorrow, the third day.
In that case…I guess they will be rebuilding it.
If touchdown Jesus rises from the ashes in all of its fiberglass glory, I’m shutting down this website, dipping my head in the nearest river and converting….I don’t know about you, but that would convince me.
Just watch. Some women on the other side of the state will claim Fiberglass Jesus appeared to them and Christianity 2.0 will be born.
Of course they are. Can’t be a good church without a tacky styrofoam Jesus yellowing in the sun.
Shame. You can feed a lot of hungry people for $700,000.
And God saw that statue his fervent admirers made in 2004, and behold, it was not very good. So He burned it in 2010. Or did He?
Seeing as how God likes to be vigorously praised a lot, maybe he was fond of the statue. After all, God is not really known for having good taste — what with His accommodation of slavery and designing lions to eat zebras, for examples. So, instead of the fire being an “act of God,” maybe it was an accident or an act of Satan, in which case, why didn’t God prevent it? Was God not powerful enough? If so, then he’ not a god.
Or does God just not care? Maybe God views all that vigorous praising of Him as excessive a*s-kissing. In that case it may be a sign that He’ not interested in being a nitpicking busybody about human behavior here on earth. And that would mean the Super Christians are wrong about the nature of God.
The Super Christians really need to be careful how they explain the fire, since that will explain a lot about the nature of their God.
