I’m not quite sure what you’re talking about, Nexus. The bible verse you mention about being “warned that you would be harassed” is mostly employed by Christians who seem to want license to be bigoted, homophobic, buck-toothed, backwoods assholes.

Truth Wins Out is an a-religious organization, by which I mean we represent people of all faiths, and those of no faith at all. I, myself, am an atheist. No one is leaving you alone, or denigrating your faith. However, it’s more incumbent upon you, as a believer, to deal with the trash in your flock, than it is on me, personally. Dan Savage mentioned in a talk not long ago that people come to him from time to time pleading to him that “not all believers are like that!” His response? Don’t tell me. Tell Tony Perkins. Tell Maggie Gallagher. Make them feel ashamed for who they are and the disgusting image they present, of Christendom, to the world.

I would second his notion: Don’t tell me. Tell them.

I feel bad inside to see how many people have apparently turned away from Christ because of his believers :/ Though, I cannot do much of anything and deny that God exist since learning so much about science, math, and technology. We were warned that we would be harassed but by believers is kind of a cheap shot; please do not leave me here alone guys :’(

This reminds me of one of the small controversies that comes up in many Christian communities: sinners who repent seem to get a lot more attention and respect than those who have lived righteous lives from the beginning. It actually gets the righteous people a little upset to see an ex-con welcomed into their community and celebrated for putting the evil life behind him. Berkowitz is another trophy for these groups, someone they can use to promote their different ministries or whatnot because they know his name if famous enough to draw attention. The whole thing is a bit sad. What’s even sadder is that the NY Times treats this whole thing a bit too deferentially. They should know better. This man is a murderer.

White and Perry are both great people who have done great work–but this whole “we can’t paint them all from the same brush because there are so many of them” is weak. Until I hear more of them (especially those who aren’t gay) speaking out and working against the opression of these religionists I will continue to think of them as mostly anti-gay.

I am not an “evangelical” myself; however, evangelicals are a large and very diverse group – and I can think of many who are among our fiercest advocates and change agents. Just to name a few,

Spirituality can also make people change from people who may have just lived their lives into people who drive planes into buildings, bomb gay bars and healthcare clinics, and shoot people in churches.

Actualy spirtuality can help a person change but only if they aren’t sociopaths who can’t even comprehend that other people have the right to exist.
