Check your mailboxes later this week, Minnesota Catholics, because your bishops are sending you a very special present!
More than 400,000 DVDs are being mailed to the homes of Minnesota Catholics on Wednesday, courtesy of Catholic bishops in the state who want to stop the campaign to legalize same-sex marriage in its tracks.
The 18-minute DVD includes an appearance from St. Paul and Minneapolis Archbishop John Nienstedt in which he says it is time for Minnesotans — not the “ruling elite” of legislators and judges — to vote on a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman. Thirty-one states have passed such an amendment.
“It is the people themselves and not politicians or judges who should make this decision,” Nienstedt says on the DVD. “This is the only way to put the one man, one woman definition of marriage beyond the reach of the courts and politicians.”
How exciting! So, eighteen full minutes of movie time about hating gay people, sent by men in dresses, sounds like a lot of fun. Are there any problems with this plan?
“It’s an effort to have Catholics vote the way the bishops want them to vote, but by and large Catholic voters are well-educated and they are independent-minded,” said Brian McNeill, president of Dignity Twin Cities.
Educated?! Independent-minded?! GAH, that’s no good if you’re a religious leader trying to force your people to act a certain way. No good at all.

If Catholics are still stupid enough to give money to these people every week, then they shouldn’t complain when junk like this is sent out to them. This nonsense will only stop when the cash dries up.
Let’s call this DVD what it is: orthodox Catholic pornography.
The obsession with “one man, one woman” demonstrates a fixation upon bodies rather than souls, genitalia rather than hearts and minds.
DVDs? These people are still stuck in reel to reel mode.
Ever think they reason they have to waste even more money on mailing these things out in a time when Diocese are having to close down parishes in financial hard times rather than hand them out in person is because of falling attendance?
Such a pity they can’t send out DVDs dedicated to stopping the epidemic of child abuse in their own ranks. Such screwy priorities they have.
Here’s an idea. Let’s submit the continuing existence of the Catholic Church in America to a popular vote. Then let’s hire a sleazy PR firm and tell them “anything goes.”
They will probably start with commercials showing headlines of the arrests of pedophile priests and the huge settlements with various archdiocese. Some footage of perp walks always works. They’ll hire that distinctly creepy political advertisement voice.
Next, they will probably get people to question the tax exemptions and deductibility of contributions. While kids in this country are homeless and starving the tax exempt funds are used to keep monsignors and bishops in the lap of luxury. They are also using tax deductible contributions to fund political campaigns.
I guess that they will trot out perceptions about the Opus Dei cult with footage of men self-flagellating (Christine – that’s men whipping themselves and I don’t mean their skippies).
You know what. I bet that we could convince the majority of voters that the RC Church is a crime organization. Hey, if voting on civil rights is good for the goose . . .
one man + one woman + no birth control allowed = lots and lots of alter boys.
born and raised catholic and raped by a priest. i hate these hypocrites.
I wrote to the newspaper of one of the bishops. I wrote in part:
You are entitled to your beliefs. But you are not entitled to enshrine
your beliefs in law to deny rights to those of us you do not understand
or value. You are entitled to teach your children what you want, but
don’t be surprised when your children grow up and reject you and your
emotionally abusive doctrines and actions. And don’t be surprised if
your children kill themselves because they could not be what your
beliefs tell them they should be. That is the real tragedy, the real
harm of your beliefs – the ruined lives, the suicides. The very
doctrines that you claim are from God, the creator of the universe who
made human sexuality in all its variety, who made love in many forms,
are themselves abusive. They are a form of sexual abuse every bit as
malicious and evil and destructive as physical sexual abuse. They attack
a person’s very sense of self, a person’s loves, a person’s sexuality.
One has to wonder, in a recession, when donations are lower than usual, how much of that money could have gone to charities?
How many more mouths would that money feed?
How many children could have been ‘adopted’ in impoverished countries?
How many days of shelter and how many people could they have clothed?
Really makes you wonder if those tithes are going to church and charity or to some political machine?
Dude, can you drop the “men in dresses bit”? It’s offensive to crossdressers to compare them to these people.
SAY WHAT?!
The search for the AntiChrist is so over.
