In a comment on the NOM blog, Maggie Gallagher had this to say about the spate of gay teen suicides this month:
The suicide of that teen was not only a tragedy it was a crime. The young people who violated laws out of mindless desire to bully or embarrass or whatever the heck kids do this stuff will be prosecuted and probably jailed, I hope.
Nothing in the press accounts suggest the kids who did this were motivated by homophobia, and the cruelty of cyberbullying is causing teen suicides among those who are not gay, as well: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5i1iMYHMsNbOUJOaBvP10z2VkrP_AD9IIKPUO0?docId=D9IIKPUO0
I do not think the absence of gay marriage is the cause of these tragedies or its presence will resolve them.
We can make this a symbol of all our other fights, or we can try to save all our kids, gay and straight, from this kind of ugly and mindless cruelty.
My heart goes out to the family of the young man. God bless him and them.
Shorter Maggie Gallagher: “That’s sad and all, but I’m going to keep spending my life trying to hurt those kids and their families, because I’m an entirely pigheaded individual who isn’t capable of ruminating over the consequences of my actions, and because I have very little connection with the real world, instead choosing to battle my own personal demons in the public square.”
In the future, Maggie: Don’t talk unless you can do it without pissing on fresh graves.

As long as Ms Gallagher (and NOM), and their ilk, project messages that gays are not the equivalent of straights, these tragedies will continue to occur!!
Get it, Ms Gallagher???
Once again, her lack of compassion, understanding, insight, discernment, empathy, and patholoical adherence to a twised, perverse, dangerous, toxic, cruel and evil ideology is evident.
A sterling example of the dark, ugly side of the human psyche in action.
Of course having full equal rights wouldn’t have done anything for these young men. It’s silly to think treating people like human beings is of any benefit to them. So keep shitting on gay people and pretending your actions have no consequences. It’s a living, after all, right Maggie?
er… pathological.
What a sad empty shell of a woman this person is. She is a juiceless husk lacking empathy or self reflection. She could be my Mormon sister.
It would be nice if Maggie cared a bit more about a gay person and their family while the person is still alive.
Some people might even consider that being decent.
“Nothing in the press accounts suggest the kids who did this were motivated by homophobia…” b******t! Ravi apparently had a problem with Clementi from day 1 and Clementi tried to have his room changed before the spy-cam incidents even occurred. They may not have *hated* gays, but they still saw same-sex affection as something to laugh at and be entertained by. If Clementi had been with a girl, they all would have yawned said who cares; not invite his friends to log in and watch because “it was happening again”.
She forgot to mention the other suicides were homophobia was a much more obvious and clearly reported contributing factor. It’s not a sin to omit something but pettily cynical to refer to this suicide and not the others as if there were not a wider societal context for all of them.
Ms. Gallagher fancies herself the reincarnation of Anita Bryant. I hope she receives the same fate as Ms. Bryant: publicly shamed and synonymous with homophobia. The damage Maggie Gallagher has done to gay couples and their children, is contemptible. Surely there is a special place in hell, perhaps in the Anita Bryant wing, for her.
I would LOVE to see Gallagher’s reactions to Dr. Rosalind Wiseman’s comments where she hefted much of the blame for these suicides (because Gallagher’s cvert agenda is to prevent the normalization of Gay people!) on socially conservative CHristofascists such as Gallagher and particularly her group, NOM! Why so silent, Mags? ;o)
