Same-sex attraction can be overcome and any type of union other than marriage between a man and a woman is morally wrong, an LDS apostle told millions of Mormons on Sunday.
Pope is Catholic.
“There are those today who not only tolerate but advocate voting to change laws that would legalize immorality, as if a vote would somehow alter the designs of God’s laws and nature,” Boyd K. Packer, president of the church’s Quorum of Twelve Apostles, said in a strongly worded sermon about the dangers of pornography and same-sex marriage. “A law against nature would be impossible to enforce. Do you think a vote to repeal the law of gravity would do any good?”
Bear shits in woods.
Packer, speaking from his seat because of his frail health…
Poor baby. Maybe he’d feel a little less poorly if he rested his vocal chords.
Some argue that “they were pre-set and cannot overcome what they feel are inborn tendencies toward the impure and unnatural,” he said. “Not so! Why would our Heavenly Father do that to anyone? Remember he is our father.”
Remember we are your masters.
By the way, that is the dumbest argument I have ever heard: It’s not so, because, really, why would God do that? Um, I do not know, perhaps the one doing the sermonizing is just a fool?
I like Aravosis’s reaction to this one:
[I]t will be a pleasure to continue exposing how hateful and bigoted Mormons really are, and how they won’t be appeased until they force every American to live as Mormons. It’s the reason they tried to steal Anne Frank’s soul. It’s the reason they had the audacity to baptize Obama’s own mother into Mormonism without his consent.
As Dan Savage has explained all too well, bigotry like this helps convince gay kids to kill themselves. People who tell them that God would never have made them this way. People who tell them that they’re immoral, that they’re sick, that they don’t deserve to love or be loved.
I know the Mormons like to think of themselves as Christians (well, Christians who believe that Jesus had sex with Mary). But if they really want people to believe that they’re Christian, maybe they should start acting like one.
Preach it, John.

The damage these evil men have caused is incalculable. And they still haven’t learned. The damage done by these ignorant men will be borne by gay and lesbian people who have the misfortune of being (or becoming) Mormon and the people who marry them because of the idiocy of these stupid, stubborn, selfish old men.
Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated into the Morg Collective.
Yeah, God would never create people in a manner that would ultimately result in their breaking his rules. OH WAIT!
I think Mormons are mentally ill. I mean, why would our Heavenly Father create anyone who would think such evil and sick things about their fellow humans?

Be careful about over generalizing. I have known many Mormons in my life and most are actually pretty liberal, tolerant people. If we took a survey of other Christian sects, I think we’d find a lot of their so-called leaders are also homophobic bigots. To say that Mormons are “mentally ill” displays the same sort of ignorance that this wing nut leader displayed.
I believe the commenter was riffing off of Packer’s ignorant comments, Osoflaco.
Osoflaco, I don’t believe you. I was raised Mormon and believe me, most of them are not pretty liberal. Mormons in general are very conservative. There are some liberal ones–I used to be one, but the vast majority are not friends of the gay community.
Well, and Daniel, I’ve found that Mormons often have sort of a weird relationship with gays/gay rights.
On a social level, I’ve never had a bad experience with a Mormon, and I’ve known quite a few. They don’t tend to act overtly homophobic like, say, a Southern Baptist from Alabama might.
But when that church speaks, they listen and do what they’re told, because of the domineering control structure of the church.
Mormons are polite–they won’t insult you to their face but you should never confuse that with support. The culture of the Mormon church is very odd–I didn’t even realize how odd until I was out of it. It’s an incredibly passive-agressive group.
