We’re getting a lot of reminders today that, even in the 21st century, with the internet and education and research, there are still places in the United States where backwoods ignorance survives and thrives. In this clip, the Tyler, Texas NBC affiliate invites its viewers to hate gays on the air.

No, it won’t destroy America. It will only destroy the ability of bigots to fill the church pews and raise $$$ in the name of homophobia.
I’m trying so hard not to be judgmental, but man that demographic sounds sadly under-educated. As for the topic, what a disgusting station.
Having a hard time believing those figures, but that’s for another day.
I’d like know what “study” that “newsman” is referring too.
How about a new topic: “Are ignorant, fundamentalist, yahoos the fall of the United States?”
I’d put any city in the nation with a large LGBT population against any place with a large Fundamentalist population. We’d kick their a*s in every category — economic, cultural, spiritual, education, etc.
No contest.
Places that do not accept gays are largely poor, ignorant, boring and backwards.
If gay Americans could think straight, instead of trying to repeal DADT they would organize to rescue their fellow gay human beings trapped in places like Tyler, Texas. I mean, seriously, think about it. What is more honorable? Being out and bombing the s**t out of foreigners for no good reason, or coming to the rescue of gay people trapped in hateful environments inside the United States?

Second, what exactly do you propose? Kidnapping gay teens? In America adults can live where they choose so I’m not sure exactly what we’re supposed to do about gay adults who live in Texas.
And third in what way would not repealing DADT help this?

Scott: A better idea would be making anti-LGBT attitudes unacceptable everywhere, so that people won’t have to run away and can live wherever they please, don’t you think?
Letting dwell the belief that we’re morally inferior, cowardly, fluffy-soft threats on American security who will rape a man as soon as look at him naked (aka the mentality behind DADT) probably isn’t going to help that.
Gays won’t cause the downfall of America, but theocrats, homophobes, and willfully ignorant people just might be!
All the wackos are going nuts because they’re finally going to have to take a little step into “the closet” while we’re on our way out of it, and rightfully so. Let them have to hide their ignorance for a change.
