Wayne Besen is the Founding Executive Director of Truth Wins Out and author of “Anything But Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth” (Haworth, 2003). In 2010, Besen was awarded the “Visionary Award” at the Out Music Awards for organizing the American Prayer Hour, an event which shined a spotlight on the role American evangelicals played in the introduction of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill.
My complaint against all these “It gets better” videos is that they imply one has no choice but to be resigned to anti-gay bigotry in the nation’s schools. On the one hand, I’m so digusted by the bigotry that I wouldn’t care if this very afternoon, the US were disbanded, with all the haters in one area and all the enlightened people in another. On the other hand, I think that when Senator Jim DeMint says that gay people shouldn’t be allowed to teach school, he should be aggressively and massively confronted on that until he not only retracts the statement but goes beyond retracting to say that he favors diversity among school teachers. DeMint’s statement that gay people shouldn’t be allowed to teach school is something that absolutely should not be allowed to stand. He should be facing protestors everywhere he goes in public until he issues a retraction. His statement is not a debate point. It is a malicious attack against gay Americans. The proper response is to fight back relentlessly until victory is achieved.
I don’t think these videos imply that we have no choice. I think these videos are aimed at specific young people who don’t have the resources the rest of us do. The fact is, there are places in this country where standing up to bigotry will get you killed. These videos can’t solve all of our problems–but they are a starting place. For too many years we, the gay community, have pretty much ignored young gay people unless they are sex objects. I know for me, growing up in Utah, knowing that there were happy gay people out there did help me get through the unrelenting abuse and depression.
This may not be feasible for everyone, but if I had children, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, I would make sure that they all learned some type of self-defense or martial arts–especially gay boys, usually at the top of the ‘hit list’ for bullies. If the school and other authorities shirk their responsibility for protecting these kids, the only alternative is to learn how to defend themselves. It’s been my experience that when someone really stands up to a bully and clobbers them, they back off, like the cowards that they usually are.
I’m glad the orthodox Jews have spoken up. Let’s have lots of them, greek orthodox christians, Muslims, african americans, and latinos making videos. we don’t need any more famous white people, we have lots of those doing it already.
Great video!!
Mordechai is an experienced public speaker to Orthodox Jews about homosexuality.
He tells a great story story about Summer camp. I’m not sure if it’s what happened to him or if it’s about a a friend of his. Apparently, a popular gay grade school boy wasn’t teased at camp at all, but was imitated and copied by all the other little boys. Nine year olds destined to be jocks were singing show tunes instead of rushing off to play baseball. All the little boys were starting to dress swishy. The camp director called his parents in a panic to have them take their boy home.
