Via Dan Savage over at SLOG. Tony “why of course bullies don’t go to church” Perkins take note…
Girl Beaten for Having “Boy’s Name”
What’s in a name? A 12-year-old girl at Hernando Middle School in Mississippi was beaten by five fellow students — reportedly because they said her name, Randi, was “a boy name.”"They started talking about me like I was a man,” she told local news station WREG. “That I shouldn’t be in this world. And my name was a boy name.” The four girls and a boy surrounded her after a Fellowship of Christian Students meeting, and, she said, kicked her in the rib and leg, hit her in the face, sat on her, pushed her face into the floor, and threw her onto a cafeteria table.
It was caught on tape apparently. However, officials at Hernando Middle School have tastefully agreed to keep the incident hidden from public view, and keep the police out of it.
A school administrator issued a statement, said WREG, that “fighting is not tolerated and that disciplinary action will be taken to the fullest extent of the law.” No charges were filed, however, because the police were not called. Whether the attack was an isolated incident or part of ongoing bullying remains unknown.
As Savage says, this isn’t simply a disciplinary matter, this was a violent attack on a twelve year old girl whose only crime was having the name Randi. By not calling the police, school administrators are abetting a criminal act. I suppose that because they were part of a Fellowship of Christian Students the school administration felt they must have had noble motives. Perhaps they were just trying to save her soul from eternal damnation for having the name her parents gave her.
The girl in question is said not to be gay herself, and that would be beside the point except for the fact that some parents seem to think that only gay kids are at risk for anti-gay bullying. But bullying is a sickness that pervades an entire school, terrorizing anyone who might even be thought to be fair game, and the message from Perkins and others of his kind is that those who are different, merely by their existence, threaten civilization itself. Out of one side of their mouths they say Love The Sinner. Out of the other its Hate The Sin.
Oh, and that were we to simply let them live their lives in peace marriage will be destroyed, the terrorists will win and civilization itself will crumble and fall.
Here’s how that plays out in the lives of children: Four girls and a boy surrounded a twelve year old girl after a Fellowship of Christian Students meeting, kicked her in the rib, kicked her leg, hit her in the face, sat on her, pushed her face into the floor, and then threw her onto a cafeteria table. Perhaps they then went home and read their bibles. See how much we love you Jesus…look what we did to Randi…
Wash, wash your hands before the multitudes Tony.

Monstrous. People should get in touch with that school district and criticize the way the incident was handled.

Neat. Hernando is a suburb of Memphis. They think [and it's cute that they think this] that they’re in a position to be one of the next “exclusive” suburbs of Memphis, as if anything south of the Tennessee state line is EVER going to be anything besides a more low-rent version of the real thing…
These are people who move to Mississippi “for lower taxes” because they’re too stupid to realize that they pay just the same, except that MS taxes them in different ways. White flight, cornpone hicks, all of them. The kind of people who keep our city from reaching its full potential.
I guess I could have saved several paragraphs and just said “White Trash.”
It would also be nice if this could focus attention on the real motivation of “anti-gay” bullying. For the most part (with obvious exceptions like the university student who was taped having sex with a man) the bullying isn’t targeting real or perceived gayness per se, but gender noncomformity, which is then read as evidence of being gay.
i went to school with a girl named Randi (spelled exactly that way). she was awesome. wasn’t boyish, or tomboyish, was just another girl. never got made fun of for it. I don’t understand some people.
Sounds to me to be more anti-trans bullying than anti-gay bullying as she was beaten up because she was perceived to not fit within the kids’ perceived gender norms for a girl. Notice how she was beaten up because her name was a boy name. The kids basically felt that this made her not fully a girl and therefore not worthy of living. THAT is anti trans bullying.
To be consistent, we need to find a female fundamentalist named Randi (who dresses to the nines, so there is no hint that she is anything but female) and take her to this school in Mississippi just so these kids can beat her up. If the kids refuse to, then we call the kids – and their parents – hypocrites; hey, if they will beat up one girl just because she is named Randi, why won’t they beat up all of them?
(Note: I am NOT advocating violence at all; I am being a smart-a**. Tell me AGAIN why I would want to be a Christian since these kids claim to be – so in all likelihood, the parents who raised them and taught them everything identify as Christian too.)
All bullying is an act of terrorizing. This and any other should be admonished. Also, any person doing the bullying, whether they are identified as Christian or not are acting out of hate and fear. Not all Christians should be tagged for this behavior, but these young people certainly give being Christian a bad name. I pray for them that they learn from their grievous behavior so that they do not repeat it nor pass it on to their children.
Well, this sounds like the Federal Government should get involved. Why isn’t someone contacting the FBI and the Justice Department. If the hayseed corn pone hillbilly KKKreestians in Mississippi can’t seem to figure out that assault and battery are a crime, maybe our national government should step in and remind them.
I can understand why the school didn’t call the police, but why didn’t Randi’s parents??? I’d have pressed charges and you could bet I’d be suing the ever loving s**t out of the little b******s parents.
I read about this. Its just sickening. Sadly down there, it is not unexpected. I am so sick of religious/political wrongies and their ignorance and bigotry.
I could not agree with you more.
