This is how fringe the National Organization for Marriage really is:
The National Organization for Marriage, the nation’s leading anti-gay group whose stated mission is to stop same-sex marriage, is actively working to defeat the passage of the Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act (SB 1716) in Illinois.
This bill would allow same-sex couples to enter into a legal civil union in the state; it does not provide for same-sex marriages. A vote on the bill is expected soon in the Illinois legislature.
“NOM’s opposition to civil unions for gay and lesbian couples shows how far out of the mainstream it truly is,” HRC President Joe Solmonese said. “This new battleground plainly reveals NOM’s deep-seated enmity toward the LGBT community, with no regard to public support.”
Two-thirds of Illinois voters, according to an October 2010 poll by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, support either civil unions or marriage equality. A Chicago Tribune poll registered 57 percent of Illinoisans approve of civil unions, compared to 32 percent who disapprove.
Like…they’ve completely lost this battle in Illinois, and yet they’re going to waste their donors’ money trying to keep gay couples from having legal recognition of any kind in that state.
They must assume their supporters are functionally retarded* as well, considering the fact that they fought against the marriage law in Maine specifically because Maine already had civil unions, which NOM claimed were just fine! We have always been at war with Eastasia, etc.

*All wingnut organizations believe this about their donors. By the way. From the teabaggers to the social conservatives, and everywhere in between. Just do a little research on how easily and casually groups like NOM lie to their followers, secure in the knowledge that said followers are too brainwashed to do simple Google searches on their own.
NOM supporters *are* functionally retarded. They’re far-right religionists which means they’ve been bred to ask no questions and do no research (questioning what you’re told is bad and makes Baby Jesus cry). They merely regurgitate talking points they’ve been fed as if they’re the Gospel Truth, and don’t even notice that what they say today directly contradicts what they said yesterday.
I wonder if NOM (or any of their ilk) believe that by opposing civil unions or marriages, that they are making same-sex couples split up, or discouraging them from becoming couples in the first place.
I touted about 10 years ago that in one sense, same-sex relationships are SUPERIOR to legally-married heterosexual ones. Gay couples are together because they WANT to be (despite all the obstacles) rather than HAVING to stay together because of a piece of paper (aka marriage license).
Always, always, when defending LGBT rights against poisonous organizations like this, remind would be voters:
1. this organization seeks to strip LGBT relationships of any legal recognition;
2. they collude with, campaign alongside, accept funds from, organizatins which seek to throw LGBT people in jail (AFA, FRC), or impose a theocracy (women’s rights, creationism in schools, turn military into a jesus army etc) – strike fear into voters. NOM is the thin end of that wedge. Drive the message home that a vote for NOM is a vote for hate and religious fanaticism.
3. their supporters are hate fuelled lunatics – hang gays, claiming LGBT people to be mentally ill etc.
Did any of those messages get across to Iowans voting on their judges this month? They need to be repeated, over and over.
I have said this about the homohaters for a long time now. They whine about “marriage” being their spayshul word but that they’ll accept civil unions. However when they get the chance to support them, they don’t. How much clearer can these people be?
They don’t want us having any rights.
NOM is really a front for mormon and roman political/ religious theocrats to resist social progress for the people they deem a threat to the world as they know it. Their theology teaches them that patriarchal control is ordained by god and that without that hierarchy, civilization (ordained by god) comes a tumblin’ down. They simply cannot nor do they have any interest in, getting beyond their little sectarian world, because they cannot imagine anything worthwhile existing outside of it.
