I just watched Hardball with Chris Matthews on MSNBC. There was a debate between The Family Research Council’s (FRC) Tony Perkins and the Southern Poverty Law Center’s (SPLC) Mark Potok. Perkins was mad because the SPLC rightfully just categorized FRC as an official, certified hate group.
The conversation shifted to pedophilia. Without flinching, Perkins smeared gay men by falsely saying they were more likely to molest children (Had he confused us with Catholic priests?) To back his bogus claim, he cited the discredited American College of Pediatricians.
This a small, anti-gay sham group that purposely tries to confuse itself with the credible American Academy of Pediatrics, which is supportive of LGBT people. The American College of Pediatricians is full of politically-motivated charlatans that do not produce legitimate peer review research on LGBT people. Meanwhile, The American Academy of Pediatrics is a qroup of researchers that actually does produce respected peer review science on homosexuality.
Citing the American College of Pediatricians on homosexuality is like citing the cigarette lobby on the health benefits of smoking. Of course, Tony Perkins knows this, yet he was still sleazy and dishonest enough to cite the group, proving SPLC’s original point that FRC is a certifiable hate group with the sole aim of demonizing LGBT people.
The American College of Pediatricians is now infamous because one of its chief researchers, George Rekers, was caught vacationing last spring with an escort he met on Rent Boy.com. (see picture above)
On the next Hardball, I sure hope Chris Matthews brings up the fact that Tony Perkins gets his “research” on homosexuality from a closeted hypocrite who was exposed as a fraudulent sex fiend.

Perkins definately stabs himself here. I just wish Matthews would back off and let Potok talk more. Matthews puts himself too much into the debate and sometimes he just doesn’t have the info to back it up.
I was shocked with how much untruth Chris Matthews allowed Tony Perkins without opportunity for factual rebuttal! Being legally partnered with a Psychiatrist (M.D.), I often attend various medical CME programs, conventions, etc., and could not imagine more comfortable, supportive non-homophobic places to be. The organizations Tony Perkins quotes are, themselves, tiny “hate groups” attempting to deceive people into believing that they are, in fact, the legitimate medical organizations they attempt label themselves as.
Why does the press so often attempt to give these people “equal billing” and legitimacy with our real medical organizations and research?
@ Joseph – because until now, no one has given them the scrutiny they deserve. You have to understand that these groups have been telling lies and distorting science for over 20 years. It is only NOW in this present day that they have been questioned. We just have to keep it up.

This study was based on a retrospective review of the medical records of male sex offenders admitted to the Minnesota Security Hospital between 1975 and 1984. Apparently, 70% of the men abused girls, 26% abused boys, and 4% abused children of both sexes. (The paper is unclear in that it doesn’t explain how perpetrators with multiple victims were counted.) The paper asserts in passing that “Eighty-six percent of offenders against males described themselves as homosexual or bisexual” (p. 83). However, no details are provided about how this information was ascertained, making it difficult to interpret. Nor did the authors report the number of homosexual versus bisexual offenders, a distinction that the Groth and Birnbaum study (described above) indicates is relevant.

I saw this last night, and was shocked that any legitimate news organization was still finding is necessary to bring people like Perkins on. I am so tired of having these A-holes debate my right to live on this planet. Can’t they find something useful to do, like cleaning toilets.

What kills me is how people like Perkins carefully parse words. Matthews asked if Sprigg’s opinion represented the opinion of FRC. Should be a simple yes or no answer. Perkins NEVER SAID NO! Instead he said the FRC was not actively working to re-criminalize homosexual behavior. That does NOT address whether the FRC agrees with Sprigg…under Tony’s answer, it could be fully the opinion of the FRC, but they just don’t have time/resources to pursue that issue right now. Matthews never forced Perkins to answer yes or no. Why is it so hard for reporters to force people to answer with a simple yes or no????
