“Ex-Gay” minister John Westcott resigned from his ministry position at Exchange following a divorce from his wife of 17 years, Dena. They were a high-profile “ex-gay” couple that were spokespeople for Exodus International. The divorce left a broken home for their three sons, Joseph (15), Jason (12) and Jacob (7).
“My divorce just happened this year and I am still walking through the process of that,” Westcott told me in an e-mail. “My divorce has nothing to do with my or my ex-wife past it is the unfortunate reality of the brokenness that affects all of humanity.”
True, but most of humanity does not parade around using “God’s Word” as club to mug people over the head with. Jesus said nothing about homosexuality, but was very clear that he was no fan of divorce. Given this reality of their new “sinful” lifestyles and the harm of divorce on families, how do John and Dena justify preaching to gay people?
Marriage means forever, John and Dena. It does not mean doing what feels good or what is convenient when the marriage gets tough. If you are going to be preachy fundamentalist scolds and tell other people how to live, the least you can do is show some Family Values and keep your vows. Either you are Bible-believing literalists or you are hypocrites. You can’t have it both ways.
Westcott is not the first “ex-gay” to abandon the Bible and get divorced when it felt good. PFOX president Greg Quinlan also ignored the Lord’s admonitions against divorce and took the easy way out. Yet, despite his sinful lifestyle, he continues his anti-gay teachings.
Wescott is best known for making a fool of himself in comedian Bill Maher’s documentary Religulous. Prior to his “ex-gay” conversion, Westcott worked at the gay bar Parliament House in Orlando.
I thought he looked familiar. Bill Maher did make him look like a fool, and it was awesome.
It likely wasn’t their “past lives” that caused the divorce. It was likely that either he, or the little woman made their “past lives” current again and that’s what caused it.
Horrid self-loathing will always make people drag others into an awful situation and ultimately ruin their lives. Now this self-hating gay man has ruined a marriage and undoubtedly caused much much future emotional burden for his 3 children. He should’ve just kept his job at The Parliament House and left everyone else out of the equation.

The sad reality underlying this situation is how utterly loveless the “ex-gay” movement is. It is based on a fundamental dishonesty and it simply robs people of themselves and forces them to live behind a facade of lies that involves, among many other depraved things, condemning LGBT people who really are in loving, honest relationships. Some of them have the nerve to call themselves “Love Won Out,” when for them what won out is dishonesty and cruelty toward themselves and others.
I remember him from the PH and the Full Moon Saloon. He went from Boys, Bondage, and Booze to Bile, Bitterness, and more than likely more Booze.
Another closet case falls. Needless to say… there will be more. Must be getting embarrassing and warm under the collar for Exodus, wouldn’tcha think?
Just for the record, religion scholars think that Christ was against divorce because it usually left the ex-wife destitute and homeless, which often resulted in prostitution to survive. This is another example of a biblical text that is time and culture bound and can no longer be sensibly applied to today’s world. I doubt if fundos know that about the ‘divorce prohibition’, as usual they just pick and choose what they will follow, what they will ignore and what they will use to justify their hatred and discrimination.
Or maybe his wife was just like a lot of women; acid tongue, bitchy, unforgiving, judgmental and a horrendous nag. And I’M a woman saying that! My mandate in life is to try NOT to act like a typical women, and to try always to see things from my mate’s view, not just my own. It’s why my mate and I have a warm, loving and unjudgmental relationship despite the financial struggles we have endured for the past six years. As long as we have each other, we could live in a tar-paper covered shack, and still have fun!

Had I had access to the abundant information via the internet and news media of today, I could have avoided a lot of personal torment. Where has this guy been all this time?

divorce is not an easy ride and there is no one stop shop for its resolution nor a quick formula for recovery..
It is quit funny that people who don’t even read the Bible can mis-quote it and even more publish that wrong information. This is poor journalism the Holy Bible clearly says that man shall NOT lay with man the way he lays with woman and over in the New Testimant it says that homosexuals will NOT inherit the kingdom of God. God destroyed Sodom and Gamora for all of the homosexuality. Obviously God does not like that lifestyle. But anyhow judgement day is upon us so we ALL will stand before The Most High.
