To be fair though, Bryan Fischer also sacrificed for his country. As a young man, he held the rank of “undergraduate” while serving in the unit known as the Philosophy Department, which fought bravely at the battle of Stanford U.

Sadly (yet hilariously) I have spoken with a few people who are part of that, oh 1/4 of Americans (thats between 75 million and 80 million, a sobering thought, even if their number is shrinking and aging rapidly) that AGREE with Fischer. . . .

We should be preparing for some sort of backlash. Worse than when MA got Marriage, or VT Civil Unions (which it is noteworthy was such a shock at the time that the reaction was bigger than that for real marriage later) or the 2003 overturning of the Sodomy laws. For a big chunk of the population, this really IS the fall of a great civilization. More than a few nuts un Mississippi and Alabama feel this way. And with the makeup of the incoming congress, well…we should be on guard.

That depressing note aside, the big news, and the news that offends the people I have spoken to the MOST, is not even the repeal of DADT…it is the fact that the SOLID MAJORITY of Americans are WITH US on this issue!

I suspect, from reading posts here over the time I have done so, that I know a lot more of these people than several of the regular posters. And, they are…mortified. Imagine if the anti marriage National amendment was ratified, the sodomy laws reintroduced, Hate Crime national legislation repealed and DADT REintroduced in one day. To many of our opponants, THIS is the level of shock and angst they are experiencing today. One man, whom I loath, but can still carry on a cordial conversation with, was honest, and very perceptive in one commnent yesterday; “Now you people can go in the Army. I can’t believe it. Ya’ know, yall’ got that Civil Union law in Illinois last week and the news barely mentioned it, not even FOX. Like it was normal or somethin!”.

And it dawned on me…he is right! Yeah, yeah, I know, it is a separate waterfountain, etc. True on a certain level, but, still, Civil Unions are the governement saying “yes, your relationship and family are real”, and my bigoted “fried” was correct, the lack of newswothyness of this, paired with the “well, that should have been done years ago” attitude of most Americans on DADT is a sign of how far we have come.

The Bryan Fischers of America know this. That is why they are so in shock. His over the top “oh, this is the end of civilization” blah, blah, blah sounds (correctly) hilarious to us. But to him and people like him, yesterday really was a revelation.

They realized that for all the battles yet to fight, and all the years of struggle for us ahead, they have lost the culture war. Gay men and Lesbians can serve openly in the most repsected institution of the right, the military (and yeah, they respect it even more than the Church) and civil unions laws pass and most people react with a yawn.

The publishers of this site are correct, we HAVE passed (not at, passed) the “tipping point” on gay rights. And the Fischers of the country know this :)
