And this is why Hate Crime laws exist:
According to arrest affidavits, [21 year-old Matthew] Guzman confessed to hunting down his victims, shooting and killing them because he thought they were gay and were coming onto him. The police report said, “His motive for committing the murder was due to his belief that the victim had homosexual tendencies. (The suspect) further stated that the victim had recently looked at him in an inappropriate manner of which (the suspect) felt was loaded with homosexual connotations, thus causing him to kill the victim. The subject confessed…eventually claiming that the victim made homosexual advances towards him, leaving him no choice but to shoot the victim.”
Wonder where he got the idea that it was acceptable to kill somebody because you perceive them to be gay.

It is SO OBVIOUS that homophobia is in most cases rooted in people’s own fear that they themselves are homosexual. And why might that be scary? Maybe because of all of the discrimination and violent acts committed against gays and lesbians?! The vicious cycle continues…
What a horrible story. Homophobia has ugly consequences in real life, which is why bigotry must be challenged.

I didn’t see anything that said the victims were actually gay, either. The impression I got was that they are, as far as the public knows, straight.

Here’s hoping he at least gets life in prison, no parole.
And said straight people will be covered under the new hate crimes law, even though they aren’t gay.
So much for “special privileges”. Though I doubt the bigot groups will ever acknowledge this.
This man sounds mentally ill to me. He will surely need to be evaluated to see if he is having command hallucinations or if something else is going on.
where did this set of beliefs come from? We are all created equal. Upbringing that teaches prejudice and hate ought to be banned!

I’m a relative of the accused – I live in Canada and I have met Matthew on 2 or three occassions while on family vacation in Jamaica and once when he and his brother came to visit us in Canada. I am horrified that he has done something like this. He was a beautiful little boy. Please know that for some time Matthew has had difficulties – he is sick. He refused to go back to his psychiatrist after a few visits. He has had paranoid delusions that I know about since my mother went to visit them 2 years ago and she reported to me that he was not so well. Not sure why I am writing all of this, I have never been in this kind of situation before.
