Dealing with a dog who Feels Under The Weather [perhaps knocking down the trash can and treating the mess as a buffet is not smart?], so here are the other things I haven’t blogged about:
1. The first marriage equality case is hitting Chile’s highest court. Gay activists are calling it a historic moment. [Link goes to "lifesitenews," so get ready for some hilarious Christian scare quotes.]
2. Fred Karger, the gay Republican presidential candidate [unicorn chimera from space...] is not being allowed to participate in one of the earliest Iowa Republican debates.
3. This story isn’t funny, but the headline is: “Woman alleges Gophers fired her because she’s gay.”
4. Finally, Rachel Maddow interviewed the amazing Daniel Hernandez last night.

Evan, I have enjoyed reading your columns and those of Wayne, et al. for a while now, and I think I need to comment, on this post in particular. I am a Christian, but I too am horrified at the way these ultra-right people are acting. It defies all Christianity, and I feel as a Social Justice Christian that perhaps you could find it in your heart to use some other term to describe these pseudo-Christian fear-based hating people. True Christians do not behave this way, naming them merely “Christians” is an insult to those who also are horrified. Well, that’s all I wanted to say! Thanks-and please, if you DO choose to refer to these…teabag humans, call them what they are. Pseudo-Christians. Thanks.
Glenna, I agree with you to a point…I do understand your feelings that your faith is being hijacked by people who are hateful and bigoted. I get that.
However.
I disagree with the notion that those people are any less “Christian” than you are, because I don’t believe that Christianity gets a pass any more than Judaism or Islam gets a pass. Moron Orthodox Jews who actually believe God gave them the Palestinian land they wish to build trash suburbs on are just as Jewish as wonderful, humanist Jews who respect human life and freedom. Sexually starved Islamist terrorists are just as Muslim as moderate, freedom-loving Muslims who embrace Western values.
I reject this asinine notion that if a person lives out your chosen [and it is chosen] religion in a way you don’t like, that they are somehow “un”Christian. Or Un-any other faith. I will never promote that idea, from this blog, in any way. If you don’t like the way your religion is playing out in the public square, you deal with that, but don’t you DARE tell me the people you don’t like are “un”Christian, because when you embrace a mythological lifestyle, you embrace it. Hook, line and sinker.
So no. Christian Right fucktards don’t “defy” Christianity. They’re just disturbed, disgusting people who choose to follow only the most grotesque verses in the bible. Liberal Christians do the same, with the happy hippy dippy lovey dovey verses. How you follow it has little to do with the religious system, and much more to do with your own psychological state of mind.
How about Christianist? You know–in the same way as Islamic extremists are referred to as “Islamists”. Sadly, many of the haters are emphasizing the word “Christian” more than any GLBT people ever have.
I think the word “Christianist” is stupid because I think it serves only to absolve moderate and liberal believers of their responsibility in propping up the nonsense of the faith.
Glenna, not to be offensive but many fundy christians would say that YOU are not a christian because of your social justice emphasis. I understand your frustration because I was a social justice christian for many year, but unfortunately they are not pseudo-christians they are christians.
Glenna, if you believe what you are saying then the responsibility falls to you–as a Christian to confront these people you maintain are not living up to your standards, not to this website to scrub content for fear of offending more moderate Christians.
It seems to me you’re going after the wrong target–go after those you claim are putting a bad face on Christianity, not those who report or comment on it.
The evil christians can make just as good a case as the good christians that their christianity is the true christianity. Christianity is not automatically a good and just thing.
