Andy Borowitz, if you’re not familiar, is a wonderful, wonderful satirist. The problem is that his recent piece on Pat Robertson really could be true. That’s the thing with the fundamentalists we’re always rebutting — their statements these days, many of them, really read like self-parody.
That being said, read this whole thing, and enjoy:
Rev. Pat Robertson sparked controversy in today’s broadcast of his “700 Club” program when he claimed that God created the blizzard currently battering the Northeast “to punish Americans who were planning to drive to do something gay.”
Explaining his theory, Robertson said, “Because of the bad road conditions the Almighty has made, any gay activities that people were planning on doing will have to be postponed by a day or two.” Additionally, he argued, God shut down major airports in the New York area “so that people who were hoping to fly to do something of a gay nature would have to take a train or a bus, so it might be days before the gay thing they were going to do could occur.
As for the millions of straight people in New York City who were also grounded by the bad weather, the televangelist said, “I think God probably wonders: If these people are really straight, then what are they doing in New York?”
Indeed!

Very funny. God must be like that grade school teacher who punishes the whole class because one person put a tack on her chair.
That’s really no more absurd than some of the stuff Robertson has said.
I really, REALLY needed that today.
Poe’s law:

Pat Robertson is wrong but God is TRUTH.
God punishes the just and the unjust for it is written.
Get the TRUTH by reading the Word of God for yourself.
It is what it is and no one’s opinion including mine will ever change His Word it is forever settled in heaven.
Amen
Bruce – you’re being satirical, right?
No, Bruce wrote me. He is very serious a out his bizarre position. He is a so-called “ex-gay”, that claims gay people are lonely. Which is odd, because I’m not.
To tell you the truth, the poor guy seems brainwashed by fundamentalism.
“His Word it is forever settled in heaven.”
Bruce, you should see a wonderful movie called “Dogma”. It is based upon a biblical passage (can’t find the lines)which says that as things are ordered on earth, so they WILL be in heaven.
Bruce, your god is imaginary, there is no heaven or hell, when you die that’s the end of you. This is the only life you’ve got, live it to the fullest without the shackles of religious dogma.
You know, I am getting sick to death of the bombastic rhetoric in the “Theist vs. Atheist” dialogues that I come across on numerous websites. This happens on BOTH sides. What’s worse, is that even when you try to tell the dueling participants to either tone it down or show more respect to their opponents and their opponents’ beliefs, they then come up with reasons to justify their dehumanizing and belittling speech and then turn on the voice of moderation. Instead of gaining more insight into others’ beliefs and worldviews (and thereby strengthening their own), they just keep talking at each other and shutting down what could be meaningful debate.
Yesterday, I came across this very insightful article that pertains to this debate (I hope the link works):

I know that this article is over 3 years old and on a humorous website, but many of the points it brings up a still relevant to today. Priya Lynn and Bruce, I really suggest you read it an pay attention to Numbers 2 and 5.
Give it a rest Nick. telling someone their beliefs are false doesn’t dehumanize them – every human has had false beliefs at some time or other.
Thanks Priya! You prove my point exactly.
