They sure know how to pick ‘em in Alabammy, don’t they?
Gov.-elect Robert Bentley in a speech at a Baptist church this afternoon said he plans to be the governor of all Alabamians and be color-blind, but he also said people who aren’t ”saved” Christians aren’t his brothers and sisters.
Bentley told a big crowd at Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, where the late civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. once was pastor, that he believed it was important for Alabamians ”that we love and care for each other.”
”I was elected as a Republican candidate. But once I became governor … I became the governor of all the people. I intend to live up to that. I am color blind,” Bentley said in a short speech given about an hour after he took the oath of office as governor.
Then Bentley, who for years has been a deacon at First Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa, gave what sounded like an altar call.
“There may be some people here today who do not have living within them the Holy Spirit,” Bentley said. ”But if you have been adopted in God’s family like I have, and like you have if you’re a Christian and if you’re saved, and the Holy Spirit lives within you just like the Holy Spirit lives within me, then you know what that makes? It makes you and me brothers. And it makes you and me brother and sister.”
Bentley added, ”Now I will have to say that, if we don’t have the same daddy, we’re not brothers and sisters. So anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I’m telling you, you’re not my brother and you’re not my sister, and I want to be your brother.”
Ew, don’t you feel like you need a shower now? Especially with all the “daddy” talk. You’re a grown man, Mr. Bentley. Get a hold of yourself.

Sadly, Gov. Bentley forgets the parable of the Good Samaritan that Jesus specifically told. In that parable, Jesus emphasized that ALL human beings are brothers and sisters regardless of belief and/or nationality. I guess this makes Gov. Bentley’s statements heretical as well as unconstitutional. With good “Christians” such as Mr. Bentley, it’s not wonder so many Christians have stopped believing in the Devil. He exists within their own churches.
Psh, you know by now most of these fundie wingnuts are Christian. Jesus preached too many “librul” things like love one another and to put human life and dignity before your religion. Nah, its much easier to follow Paul, and just cut out all the red bits in the Gospels
That he felt it appropriate to say such a thing as governor demonstrates beyond all doubt that he is not in his right mind.
He’s just stating what many of these Christians believe. If you’re not born again you’re doomed.
Daniel – Then all I can say to the good Governor and his ilk is: “Forgive me if I got it right the first time!”
Typical bigoted, self-righteous Pauline Christianist. Hope he comes back as some non-mainline religious person and gets his butt persecuted. He deserves it for his bigotry.
Geez! Have any of you Biblical scholars ever read the Bible? I don’t think so. The parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25ff) was given in response to a question posed by one of Jesus’ opponents who was trying to entrap Him and in turn justify himself. It had nothing to do with “all human beings are our brothers and sisters regardless of belief and/or nationality.” The parable exposed the hypocrisy of this lawyer. Regardless of belief? Really? Jesus didn’t care what anyone believed? So, when He died on the cross, He didn’t care if you believed in Him or not? It doesn’t bother Him if you reject what He did and turn to Buddhism or whatever? But, that’s probably just some more bigoted, self-righteous Pauline Christianity. Jn. 14:1-6; Mt. 12:46-50. Jn. 8:44.
You don’t have proof for anything you say. And no, your Bible verses are not “proofs.” They are from an ancient faith book with no more validity than any other ancient book of legends and fairytales.
