Never forget this about anti-gay wingnuts: they want nothing more than to control the sexual activity of all people, at all times. They hilariously think this is their right in a free society. In a long, stupid article about Judge Roger Vinson’s cut-and-pasted ruling against healthcare reform [which he calls "MussoliniCare," because he's too dumb to understand either healthcare reform or Benito Mussolini], Bryan Fischer says this:
It’s time to start dismantling egregiously wrong precedents such as Roe v. Wade and Lawrence v. Texas and Wickard v. Filburn, and the sooner we start dumping them in a landfill somewhere the better. Judge Vinson has shown us the way. May his tribe increase.
Ain’t gonna happen, Bry. If this hurts your fee fees, I’ll say it again: convert to Islam, move to Iran. You will be happier.
[h/t Kyle]

“…the sooner we start dumping them in a landfill somewhere the better.”
Like they dumped the people wearing the pink triangle into landfills once upon a time Bryan…?
The religious reich is all about control. Control of women’s bodies, control of GLBT people.
Good luck, Bryan…the Texas sodomy law was struck down by the SCOTUS years ago.
In many states the sodomy laws covered oral sex as well. (Here in NC the law didn’t use the word “sodomy”, but “crime against nature” – which conveniently did not have a legal definition.) You’re going to have to built A LOT of prisons, Bryan, if you want to prosecute every heterosexual who has ever engaged in oral sex. In fact, most of the US adult population has engaged in sodomy at some point, however you choose to define it. If you got your wish, Bryan, there would be more people IN JAIL in the US than outside of jail being productive citizens.
“Never forget this about anti-gay wingnuts: they want nothing more than to control the sexual activity of all people, at all times.”.
I never realized to what extent this was true until I heard a couple of wingnuts say “Gays think people have a right to have sex with any consenting adult”. Only a very scary evil person can think like that.
Of course as Bryan sees it, there’s no need to RE-criminalize sodomy, since the fact that it was once illegal in Middle Assyria means that it’s still illegal in the Middle West.
Because there were laws on the books, you see, and unless the entire Supreme Court went around to each and every jurisdiction with a big red rubber eraser and scrubbed away the statute by hand, the states still get to arrest men for giving and receiving blowjobs. Also for marrying Negroes and having abortions, but that goes without saying.
Really. Honestly. That was his point.
Rational people would surely agree that an activity should be criminalized only if it causes documented tangible harm to others. Therefore, isn’t there a huge case to be made for criminalizing wingnut-religion, but no case at all for criminalizing sodomy?
Something we should all realize about Mr. Fischer and his lot. They know, deep down, that they have lost their self proclaimed “culture war”.
One of the failures (maybe, in some ways, successes!) of the progress we have made in OUR rights is that 24 year old gay guys and lesbians seldomly (in my experience and conversations) realize just HOW FAR we have come. When faced with a still standing legal prejudice, most of them (AND just as importantly, their hetero peers) say “Thats just stupid” and assume that it will soon change. Demographics are on their side, and they have never grown up with TV that had the “bad guy” depicted as a “devient”, etc. (Think of an otherwise great Hitchcock film, Strangers on a Train as an example, but tv used to be full of them.) They see even (and I was no fan) the last President appointing Gay ambassadors, and this one (full marriage aside, admittedly a disappointment, but, I understand the politiucs of it) as a full friend of us. They Watch Ellen, and…she is a Covergirl! A young lesbian may not be into makeup, but…that is still very affirming.
To the Bryan Fischers of the world, this is just pure evil, run rampant. We laugh at them (I do to) and they ARE funny in their over the top ignorance. But their kids, which we dont see that much, don’t see those commercials. They are among the millions of kids being homeschooled. They have their own (small) media, and they live daily with their parents telling them, with real sadness and tears, how great things “used to be”.
Demograhics are on our side. As is truth. But, these fundamentalists see themselves as holding to TRUTH, and, there is one thing that I think many of us forget; tens and tens and tens of MILLIONS of Americans agree with Mr. Fischer. Not just a few nuts in Mississippi or the NP of Michigan or southern Utah speaking for a few fringy wingnuts. Oh he is the far fringe of the fringe, but there ARE worse, and in a society of 310 million, 8 or 10 % of the population being in agreemtn with him would be a nation with the population… of Canada.
We laugh at them (easy to do!), but, don’t forget…they have Billionaires behind them also, writing checks. They have armies of volunteers, who see every Ellen episode as a condemnation on this nation. I know one women who, talking about Ellens show, and the covergirl commercials, broke into sobbing tears. She is 38, has degrees from two respected universities, and lives in Darian (!), not Tupolo. She is very, very politically active.
Fischer is a wing nut…he knows his side has lost this fight…but, that does not matter to him. He thinks his God has demanded he fight to the death on every single issue relating to us. And don’t forget, he is a buffoon, but he is a buffoon who has recently had (admittedly wing nut) US Senators on his show. He has powerful friends. He has an audience.
It is not small.
He is fun to laugh at, and yes, we have reached the tipping point so often mentioned here, but we laugh at this viper, and fail to remember that millions take his words…SERIOUSLY, as common sense wisdom. We ignore his words and lobbying, both to those tens of millions of our fellow Americans, and many of our most powerful politicians, at our peril. They see the tipping point in the rear view mirror also. Most of them anyway. A few are surrendering the fight. But most…well, there is an old saying among hunters; “There is nothing so dangerous as a wounded and dying animal”.
We should remember that when we laugh and think this man and his lot good just for humor. Not to be a downer, but just an observation from a guy who knows a lot of these people. To millions of people, we are slightly less than…human. Damaged. Not even most conservatives feel this way, but, to a core group, this is the case. And they are frightened, and they are angry.
And some of them are senators in postions of great power. And, frighteningly, they do not think Fischer is funny…they think him the voice of morality and reason.
But he’s not part of a hate group, and it’s “persecution” to claim otherwise.
