Harding University is an insanely conservative Church of Christ-affiliated school in Searcy, Arkansas, just north of Little Rock. It’s one of those schools that, as a private institution, has the right to set its own policies. Unfortunately, as with any private Christian university, there will be students whose parents encourage them to go there, because of their beliefs, but who do not conform to the rigid, wingnut ideal encouraged by the school. Specifically, there will be gay students who are discriminated against just because of who they are, because even in a faith-based school in the hinterlands of Arkansas, where religious indoctrination, rather than education, is the number one priority, college is a time when many gay students finally find the courage to live with integrity and honesty. They are not misbehaving. They are who they are, and no number of poorly informed school policies will change that fact.
In that spirit, a group of LGBT students and alumni at Harding have created a zine which seeks to make their voices heard in the dark, lifeless halls of that place. Here is their opening letter:

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the administration immediately blocked access to the zine with their internet filter, and when asked for comment, said the following:
Harding University is a private Christian university whose mission and policies are rooted in biblical principles. All students are given a copy of the handbook and know about our mission and policies before their first day on campus. The student handbook states that the university holds to the biblical principle that sexual relationships are unacceptable to God outside the context of marriage and that sexual immorality in any form will result in suspension from the university.
Based on that policy, university administrators felt that having this website available on campus goes against said mission and policies. In addition, the handbook states that any literature distributed on campus must be approved by the Office of Student Life and must state the name of the sponsoring organization. These pamphlets were both printed and distributed anonymously with no prior approval, and the website is an online version of that pamphlet.
You see, fundamentalist wingnuttery dies when reality is allowed to shine in. Schools like Harding are only able to thrive if they do everything in their power to reject the real world outside their walls. That’s why their handbook has policies like this:
Harding University holds to the biblical principle that sexual relationships are unacceptable to God outside the context of marriage. Sexual immorality in any form will result in suspension from the University. Visiting in the residence of a single member of the opposite gender, even though others are present, without permission is prohibited.
Staying overnight in a motel, hotel or any such arrangement with a member of the opposite gender will result in suspension, although explicit sexual immorality may not have been observed.
Students are prohibited from possessing or displaying pornographic materials of any type. This includes the use of vulgarity, profanity, and any offensive language or offensive symbols.
Students are not allowed to social dance or go to dance clubs, bars, or other inappropriate places of entertainment.
The illegal, unauthorized use or abuse of Harding University’s telephone, computer or network system is prohibited.
Men and women are discouraged from excessive public displays of affection.
But what’s funny is that, due to the Harding administration’s puerile reaction to the publication, it’s getting far more attention than it ever would have. People all across the country today are disseminating the brave words of these Harding students and alumni, shining a light on the sad state of affairs in this backwoods clown college, and letting the students, administration and alumni of Harding and similar schools know that yes, LGBT people are there too.
Do yourself a favor and read through the zine, as it’s really a stellar publication. Alumni tell the stories of the truly insane crap that the “school” peddles to gay students, the anti-scientific way they go about “counseling” gay students, and students tell the stories of what religious abuse really does to gay people. They talk about what the closet is like, and they even take some time to explain the story of Sodom and Gomorrah to fundamentalist morons who apparently have never heard of a concordance.
Enjoy, and share it far and wide. And to the intellectually bereft scolds who run Harding: enjoy your little moment of shame. That sound? Other schools laughing at you.

‘policies are rooted in biblical principles’….ok, so when do they start stoning people to death, have the cafeteria go strictly kosher (like that bunch would ever give up bacon), stop wearing multi-blend fabrics, and sacrificing small birds and other animals at the ‘temple’ for special occasions and on and on. By being so draconian, (no dancing?!) they are driving the students to do things which will get them into trouble and screw up their lives. When we were kids in the 60s, Catholic school kids had a reputation for being little hellions when no adults were around, because they were so controlled and even abused by the nuns in the classroom.
To LGBT kids getting ready to go to college I have this to say: do NOT allow your parents, your church, or anyone else dictate to you your choice of school. Going to university is the first step you will take as an adult. You may not be old enough to drink, but you are old enough to drive, vote, serve in the military, and choose the educational institution where you will pursue your goals.
If your parents try to manipulate you by withholding money, before you cave in, try looking at sources of financial aid, and don’t dismiss the possibility of working your way through school. It can be done.
If you can’t get out of going where your parents want you to, keep your eyes and ears open, because I promise you, you will not be alone on campus. There will be other LGBTs around, and with luck you just might find them.
I couldn’t agree with Scott more!
Thanks for publishing this. I went to Oklahoma Christian University, a sister school to Harding, and I faced the same kind of oppression there. We had someone come to a chapel service to advertise her program that helped people “resist” their homosexuality or something.
I’m out of that mess now, but I’m still a Christian. I’m going to theology school, actually, and I’m hoping to create a church that is more accepting.
I’m surprised, given their bibliolatry, that “the Bible” wasn’t capitalized throughout the university’s screed. But then, the Church of Christ has no regard for music in worship, either.
The rules are the rules. If you didn’t choose to attend this school, why do you care what we do? If you did choose to go to this school, you were fully aware of the rules. Case closed. Stop complaining, or grow up, ben an adult, and make the decision to go to school somewhere else. You knew what you were getting into.
Tom Brady, who are you talking to?
Also, we have as much right to criticize your bigotry as you have to be a bigot.
This is just sad. That people have come to such a conclusion. The “Christians” that are posting are doing far worse than the people that struggle with homosexuality. Judging is listed the same as every other sin, so continue to slander a Christian University that tries to keep God and his word the focus and center of the principles taught at this school. All I can say is that I pray you wake up and see that hating what a Christian is doing is like standing against us, which isn’t even close to what God intended. We, at Harding hate all the sin, not saying we don’t sin, because we all do, but we still Love the sinner, no matter what the sin is. People have twisted the words, and even so far as the scripture to make a point, well that is just digging a deeper hole for you in the long run. God didn’t create us to hate each other, or fight like animals, he created us to love, and to build each other up, so why doesn’t everyone just take a step back and ask what would Jesus do? I’ll tell you what he would do, not because I know more than anyone else, but because it is clearly stated. If anyone among you is sinless let him cast the first stone (Jesus in regard to the adulteress woman). It’s putting a very dim and bad light on the younger generation watching “Christians” treating each other like this. Just before you comment, think first, is it my place to judge, and is this the attitude that Christ would have. I pray that you guys would see the love and peace, and GRACE that my God has.
Tom, you and I both know that parents pressure their kids into going to certain schools by controlling the finances. And these days, college is so expensive that it’s fairly f*****g unreasonable to suggest that the “kids can just go somewhere else.”
Wingnut parents, unfortunately, reproduce like rabbits, which means they end up with lots of gay kids, who are then indoctrinated and abused by their parents’ beliefs, often far into adulthood, and, it seems, at clown colleges like “Harding University.”
@Carson:
Lose the “struggling with homosexuality” line. It’s stupid, and it’s something that fundamentalists tell each other in order to deflect attention from the fact that all people who are NOT fundamentalists (most of the population) think that fundamentalism is mindnumbingly stupid. (And they are correct!)
This is also a fundamentalist lie:
“We, at Harding hate all the sin, not saying we don’t sin, because we all do, but we still Love the sinner, no matter what the sin is.”
No. You refuse to accept the reality of sexuality, which allows you to set up a false dichotomy where you can pretend you don’t hate gay people.
Actually, they don’t capitalize the church in church of Christ. No music because it cannot be shown that there were instruments in the earliest churches. I was raised in the church of Christ and have taken another direction in life. I attended Florida College- the more conservative branch’s 2 year college in Tampa. Yes, I was forced by my parents, but I was going to be kicked out for non-compliance with their strict ideals, so one semester was all I made it. I can say that I have not experienced a person in the church of Christ who ever said they hate a sinner. They hate the sin and try to work with the person to overcome the sin. It is their religious right to do this and their ability to uphold their ideals in their school. I did not fit, I left. I agree most with the poster who promoted a student making it on their own. There are MANY students who have chosen this lifestyle of church of Christ and are willing to live by the stringent requirements. This school is for them… not for me!
Carson, the main point here is that it is a flawed and inferior form of white trash (I am sure there are some ethnic minorities also there) Christianity that still wallows in the darkness of a literal interpretation that LEADS to an understanding that somehow being gay is a sin.
It is an inferior college
It is an inferior form of the religion
It leads to homophobia
It espouses the “love the sinner hate the sin” stupidity that even some foolish gay people like N Hall (post 11) have sadly bought into
It needs to be shown for the crap that it is. And, it is so damaging that in the future, it should be legally and socially harassed to the point that it will not be for anyone, not even the “MANY students” who will be, if they follow the teachings of this college, bad people, bad citizens, and a threat to our rights.
a note…in my last post, I wrote that N Hall seems to have bouught into the “love the sinner hate the sin” crap. I assume I am mistaken in this. What I meant to write it that it appears he seems to thing people have a right to do so and still see themselves as fully human and decent people, which anyone who does, is not.
Carson: It is hard for many of us to see the ” the love and peace, and GRACE that my God has.”, when the vast majority of christians are no different from the vast majority of the population as a whole. When we read your holy book and find your yahweh “hardening people’s hearts” to punish them, an accessory to genocide, as misogynist as a bronze-age potentate and casting people into hellfire for using their rational brains instead of the magical thinking of unevidenced faith, its hard to know what you could ever be talking about.
N. Hall said ” I can say that I have not experienced a person in the church of Christ who ever said they hate a sinner. They hate the sin…”.
There’s no such thing as “hate the sin, love the sinner”. Being same sex attracted is a core part of a person’s being. If you hate that you hate much of the essence of who a person is. It is a lie to say you love someone when you hate a major part of who they are.
I just ran a little test to see if it were possible to love the sinner while hating the sin: I asked myself if I could love the wingnut while hating the wingnutism, and I found that it is NOT possible.
The Bible says it’s wrong. The school is sticking to what the Bible says. I applaud this school for not conforming to the worldly views that’s ruining this society. Kids don’t have to go to school there. They can take their liberal views somewhere else. If I were Harding I would tell those kids, “Don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya!”
The Bible, understood by scholars, not white trash conservatives, says no such thing. Look at churches that are better than yours Josh, such as the Episcopal Church, The Evangelical Lutheran Church, the United Church of Christ and the Presbyterians.
It will be the fundy, second rate churches and their institutions that will have to change. They can. Many have. Gay people cannot. Harding, in time, will.
And it is people like you, and second rate institutions like Harding that have been ruining society, and if you have not noticed, society is not standing for it anymore.
It’s so cute that fundamentalists think they contribute the most to society. They do worse by almost every standard than the rest of society.
I would agree that it would probably be better for Harding if the liberal students left, because the liberals probably mess up the grading curve for the wingnuts.
I’m neither a scholar nor white trash but this seems pretty simple to me, “Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, HOMOSEXUALS, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, robbers, none of these will inherit the kingdom of God. And this is what some of you used to be. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)
And before you start talking about second rate churches, I don’t think you understand what the Church of Christ stands for. We speak where the Bible speaks and we are slient when the Bible’s silent. If you would like to email me I would be more than happy to have a conversation with you. I believe people get the misconception that we condem people for those that do wrong. I will let God be the judge in the last day. I know I’ll need as much grace and mercy as possible on the day of judgement.
Harding and other places like it were created to foster an “us against them” exclusionary environment, where all the good christian students can be taught to hate anyone who is not exactly like them. They will also learn very little about science and evolution, and the history they learn will be biased toward the pro-war, America-rah-rah version pushed by rich white male hetero christofascists and their uneducated toadies. Wake up you religious wackos, the modern world will not stop moving to the future while you slide back to the Bronze Age. You are wasting your time trying to stop it, just like you are wasting effort trying to control SEX…so get some SEX, and take a laxative. A lay and a dump will probably do wonders to ease the tension in your ‘soul.’ Gawd knows there is enough tension to go around.
Religion…it’s all about the sex.
Josh the bible is fake, written by uptight old farts to control sex and money thousands of years ago. You have been deceived. But in the interests of fairness to the possibility that it’s all true, please die and then email us from the afterlife and explain what it is like…what gawd is like, do angels have wings, is there any booze or SEX in heaven…all that stuff.
Josh, I don’t want to get into the Bible argument, but you do realize that the word “homosexual” wasn’t even coined until the 19th century, and that the original words that have been lazily and incorrectly translated as ‘homosexual’ in your Picture Bible meant nothing of the sort, right?
Josh, I find it really hard to believe that the word “homosexuals” appears in the Bible. The word didn’t even really exist until the mid 1800s.
It’s a lazy, agenda-driven translation meant to keep the peasants blaming/hating each other.
Josh, as an ordained elder in a real church, speaking Koine Greek and Hebrew and with a degree in religion, and from your own words, the lowly fundamenalism of the “the Bible says I believe it that settles it” PURE white trash attitude you exhibit, I can promise you, the only benefit I would get from you is humor.
I could teach you things. I have deprogrammed a lot of fundamentalists, and I have seen this over and over, but to be blunt, I have bigger fish to fry. I will leave you with this to ponder; why do churches many, many times larger than you own, the ones that in the main founded the Christian traditons of this nation, and have the best scholars and professors of the religion, now, after doing the best scholarship, ACCEPT gay people and their committed same gender relationships? They have discovered nothing new…but just as they discoverdd that we were ALWAYS supposed to treat women as equal, and that slavery was ALWAYS morally repugnant and wrong, even as the Bible CLEARLY, read as a mere fundamentalist manner “it says it, I believe it, that settles it” gives Permisssion (!!!) for both of these things (check it, it does) and we now know both positions are wrong (even the chapters that talk abour HOW to buy and sell slaves), so do the BETTER churches…yes Josh, better churches, now see the ancient bigotry, bad translations, and ancient understandings that allowed slavery and the second class status of half of humanity (women) to be accepted because they were so “Plain to see! I will quote scripture!”, NOW see the issue of gay rights and acceptance of gay people in the same light of scholarship and understanding.
In short, you are wrong, and the way your “church” approaches this is wrong, and if you used the same approach with minorites and women you use with us, the “But it says this!” with no further scholarship approach, we would still have slavery and second class status for women.
Think about it.
And think about the fact that the school is being rightfully condemned for its second class approach to learning, the way it denegrates a whole class of people, and the intellectual weakness that is incapable of realizing that there is not separtation between being gay, and the actions of gay love. It is a core identity, not a series of sinful actions. To not realize this is the HEIGHT of OPEN BIGOTRY.
It will continue, correctly, to experienc this until it raises the level of its Biblical scholarship to that of better denominations.
I wish you good luck in your growth. I suspect you have a good mind, and that it has just been given bad data, and you never had to think about any of this before. I suggest you do so. Trust me…I used to be exactly like you, and know how you currently view this. Happily, if you are brave enough to not just discount the incontrovertable facts I have written, you have a chance to see a wonderful thing…the truth.
I have been there Josh. The truth is hard sometimes, but, its better. That is why so many denominations are finally doing the hard work of embracing it. Do the same.
Josh said “The Bible says it’s wrong. The school is sticking to what the Bible says. I applaud this school for not conforming to the worldly views that’s ruining this society.”.
Josh to have the best society possible we have to all agree to maximize the benefits and minimize the problems for all in an equal fashion. The bible’s and that churche’s hate speech against gays works against that goal. It is that worldly view that’s going to ensure we all have the best world we can possibly have. Either you work for that goal or you’re working for evil.
Like I said earlier guys, God will be the judge in the final day and I look forward to being there with him. It’s sad what has become of this world.
Gays have a hard time coming out because it’s wrong and they know it. If God meant for guys to be with guys (and women with women) he would have said it. He didn’t. I don’t care if you say it’s socially acceptable or not. God doesn’t want it or He would have said he was o.k with it. Please prove to me that people are born gay…it doesn’t happen.
I don’t understand how people can’t see this. It’s written in black and white. I guess you guys are used to reading in foofy colored rainbows so that’s why you can’t decifer it.
Now, if anyone would like to have a simple discussion on this, my email is readily available. If not, you keep convincing each other on this little comment section that it’s o.k. That’s how this problem started in the first place, people talked to people and convinced each other it’s acceptable.
Josh, you are brainwashed.
You have no proof for anything you say. You can’t even prove that any “god” exists, much less your conception of god. You have no basis for your asinine statement that gays “have a hard time coming out because it’s wrong and they know it.” I sincerely hope you have no children, because your views are the kind that lead kids to stick guns in their mouths and pull the trigger.
You know what else is written in black and white? Curious George.
We have science on our side. We have reality on our side. You have NOTHING except your brainwashing, which obviously happened early and often.
And no, Josh, none of the writers here are going to e-mail you, because we have lives, and we’re bored with easily winning arguments with wingnuts much more prominent than you.
Josh, I really don’t know why you’re commenting on an old blog I haven’t updated in months. I see that you’re lonely. Unfortunately I can’t do much for you. It’s funny, though, that you say that a “real man” would e-mail you and talk to you about it. Is this your desperate way to try to get attention from gay guys without thinking that you’re “sinning”? Sad.
Josh, I owuld love to write a little for you, but i really have no time.
I suggest that you read and think upon what Gene had to say. He has far morew wisdom in his little finger than your pastor has in the hwole of his head.
And then I would suggest you read some of the biblical scholarship on the subject. It is amazing how unclear the creator omn the Universe has been on this subject, when he was so clear on so many others.
and as for this: “God doesn’t want it or He would have said he was o.k with it.” If god had wanted man to fly, he owuld have given him wings. A statement from antiquity that is as vacuous as yours.
Finally: “Please prove to me that people are born gay…it doesn’t happen.”
If you won’t accept the testimony of actual gay people, then there is no proof possible for you. I knew I was gay when I was three. i just didn’t know what to call it, but i sure as hell knew that i wasn’t supposed to talk about it. This was 1953.
And while you are at it, prove that people are born straight. there’s no gene for it.
By why listen to me? Why not listen to Dr. Francis collins, born-again evangelical and head of the human genome project.
“It troubles me greatly to learn that anything I have written would cause anguish for you or others who are seeking answers to the basis of homosexuality. The words quoted by NARTH all come from the Appendix to my book “The Language of God” (pp. 260-263), but have been juxtaposed in a way that suggests a somewhat different conclusion that I intended. I would urge anyone who is concerned about the meaning to refer back to the original text.
The evidence we have at present strongly supports the proposition that there are hereditary factors in male homosexuality — the observation that an identical twin of a male homosexual has approximately a 20% likelihood of also being gay points to this conclusion, since that is 10 times the population incidence. But the fact that the answer is not 100% also suggests that other factors besides DNA must be involved. That certainly doesn’t imply, however, that those other undefined factors are inherently alterable.
Your note indicated that your real interest is in the truth. And this is about all that we really know. No one has yet identified an actual gene that contributes to the hereditary component (the reports about a gene on the X chromosome from the 1990s have not held up), but it is likely that such genes will be found in the next few years.”
Educate yourself, younbg man, before you presume to speak with authority to people who know far more about the subject than you ever will until you come out yourself.
Josh, you have obviously been fed a lot of fundamentalism (I know the signs…been there…suffered that).
It is NOT hard for most gay people to come out now. Not in the majority of America that is secular, or where the people are members of the denominations I made reference to. (and facts you seem unwilling or unable to address in that these whole denominations, the oldest and most influencial in American history, welcome gays as who we are now)
It IS hard for the children of fundamenatlists. And, that is what must change. And will. And is.
I pointed out, and I WILL CALL YOU OUT ON THIS….a LOT of things that were in BLACK AND WHITE (Slavery = Good! HERE IS THE CHAPTER AND VERSE ON HOW TO DO IT) (WOMEN = BE QUIET AND SHUT UP, ditto) are NOT the church standard any more. (some, sadly, still treat women that way, but the trend is away from this, thankfully). NEITHER is Homophobia for the best, most educated and open minded Christians who have spent the most time studying scripture.
You may not like it, and with your background (mine to) I understand why you think like you do.
Its time to stand back, and be brave enough to look at the damage such theology as you believe has caused, and start studying WHY the older and better educated denominations have changed on this issue, just as we ALL did on slavery, and most have on women.
Think about it.
When you have something to offer, please offer it. And Josh, the issue of the role of gay people in the church began to be discussed not in this chat room, but generations ago, when people first noticed that so much of what they had been told about the “depravity” of Gay people was not what they saw in their gay FELLOW PASTORS and friends. And when the scholarship that had allowed for greater understanding and fuller celebration of the good news for all people (no more slaves, women pastors, calls for justice in society) ALSO meant that even this dearly held (At the time..still dearly held by an ever decreasing number of people in this country) prejudice should be studied also.
Many of the great minds of the Church…Brueggerman,Guthrie, Duba et.al. did not WANT to accept the conclusions of their scholarship at first. They were comfortable with the anti gay stances they had held. But intellectual honestly, and Gods love, allowed them to grow.
In time, I have trust you will do the same.
See, I feel like I don’t really have anything to say in comparison to some of the comments here. I might as well say a few things I feel, then.
1) Well done to those that stood up for their own beliefs and who they are. Everyone deserves the chance to be who they are inside, and nobody should take that away from them.
2) Josh, just read what Gene’s saying. He has a lot of experience, obviously. Also, you said that a lot of gays have trouble coming out because they know it’s wrong to be gay. To be honest, the only problem that I’d have if I were gay was the worry that I’ll be beaten up for my beliefs. I have friends that have, on the other hand, come out quite easily. Why? Because it’s who they are. Some people have the ability to do it, some don’t. I don’t divulge half of the stuff about myself that is true for fear of being judged by another human. Basically, learn something and stop judging other people because of their beliefs.
Josh said ” Please prove to me that people are born gay…it doesn’t happen.”.
That’s irrelevant. People have a moral right to do whatever they want as long as they aren’t hurting anyone. You go against that Josh and you’re siding with evil.
One thing I find interesting, is that in the entire webzine, there is only ONE brief mention of sexual activity. I’m willing to bet that Harding students have been subjected to similar (equally sexual) passages in Harding literature course readings. I admire that writer for being more open and honest about sexual activity than most of his straight peers at school. The zine was written tastefully and was very respectful of its intended audience. As a result of Harding administration’s reaction, HU Queer Press’s voice will not be heard by hundreds, but tens of thousands. Hearts WILL be changed. It is time for us Christians to truly approach those around us with Christ’s love.
So far this is the best article about this.
Please quit saying people can choose to attend whatever college they want.
If you are raised in a fundamentalist Christian cult, you do not have choices.
I was forced to attend this backwoods clown college by my parents. No, I couldn’t just go to a state university. I would have been cast out of my family. I would have had to fend for myself as a young eighteen year old.
My choice was not a fair one: either attend Harding, or be cut off permanently from your family. Most other students I knew were told something similar.
Many people here do not understand that the Church of Christ is a cult. Cults control people, financially and emotionally.
@tolerance:
thanks for pointing that out. that’s the thing that gets lost in stories like these…and it’s not just wingnut parents either! lots of parents, for whatever reason, pretty much control where their kids go to school, whether it’s that they’re only willing to spend a certain amount of money, or “yer daddy went to Ole Miss and yer pappy went to Ole Miss, by gawd all mah children gon’ go to Ole Miss!” Such is the case with wingnut parents and extremist clown colleges.
Josh’s version of that letter from Paul is a totally wrong and hateful mistranslation in the fundo versions of the Bible. The word ‘homosexual’ does NOT appear anywhere in the Bible as the concept didn’t even exist. What they were referring to was mostly temple prostitution and male on male RAPE! Besides who cares what Paul said, he was just as IMPERFECT and biased as the rest of us. CHRIST never said anything anti-gay.
PS–for Tolerance, what the hell kind of loving “Christian” parents would throw their own *children* out on their own just because they won’t go to a certain college or because they have a gay kid. It goes against millions of years of evolution. I will never understand that type of sociopathy!
I completely understand the dilemma faced by LGBT students at Harding and similar colleges and universities. As a young gay man I also attended a fundamentalist college and because of strong financial incentives and family expectations stayed through to graduation. My hope is that the LGBT students can be of mutual support to each other until they can leave the institution. It would be wonderful if progressives got together and raised funds to provide scholarships to students wishing to leave fundamentalist colleges so Queer students could opt for better institutions of higher learning. I am proud of these brave students and wish them the best
gene– I said this yesterday, but for some reason, it didn’t post.
I loved your two responses to josh. You’ve become one of my three or four favorite posters iwht just those two comments.
I find it interesting the Josh is no longer here. Maybe he’s really busy. maybe he’s really thinking. Maybe he’s asking his pastor or teacher.
By the way, i followed pu on those theologians you mentioned. Interesting.
this was a very interesting link.

No dancing? I guess they did not learn anything from Footloose.
Josh writes, “God will be judge on the final day and I look forward to being there with him, It’s sad what the world has become.”
No, what’s sad is the number of people who, given the freedom to believe ANYTHING they want to believe about God, opt to worship a vengeful sadist. It says a lot more about them than it does about God. You wanna watch God torture people on the “final day” for the “crime” of not agreeing with you? What a nice, moral person you are.
Well said Bill.
Josh, if you’d like to discuss what the Scriptures say about gay people, please feel free to email me. I was raised in the churches of Christ, attended LCC (now LCU) and graduated with a minor in Biblical Literature.

(1) If I thought I was made to have sex with my dog, I would be using the same argument used here to justify my actions.
(2) You know your argument is weak when you have to resort to name-calling, e.g., “wingnuts.”
(3) Your argument is with God, not with me, I just happen to agree with God.
(4) There’s no sex in heaven, so if you’re tempted with illicit sex here on earth, just deal with it for a few short years and you won’t have to worry about it anymore.
(5) But most of all, quit blaming God and His people.
(6) If you don’t like Harding, go somewhere else, like Afganistan, they have good schools, just quit complaining.
(7) I can not marry someone of the same sex anymore than I can marry a tree. Neither can I define a square circle, because there is no such thing.
(8) I have seven degrees, three from Harding, and it remains the best experience of my life.
(9) No one paid a cent for any of the schools I attended, so stop all the whinning.
(10) Harding is not for everyone, and neither is Heaven.
“But the more I called Israel, the further they went from me.” Hosea 11:2
@Joel:
Let me see if I can make fun of you in ten ways.
1. Your dog is not a being with a sentient human mind and thus cannot consent. Grow up and find a grown-up argument.
2. Um, “wingnut” is mostly a catch-all for morons who reject science, reality, common sense, etc. If you do not like it and it makes your butt hurt, I suggest you find another way to spend your time.
3. You cannot prove that god exists.
4. You cannot prove that heaven exists. You just repeat it, like all your be-cheetoed forefathers did.
5. You’re really bad at making separate points. If you want to make a point that is an addendum to another point, please use the following format:
6. Learn to spell Afghanistan, and then consider the fact that radical Muslims have far more in common with fundamentalist Christian extremists like yourself than they do with normal Americans. I have long contended that since Fundamentalists have no use for Jesus except what he did for them (you got yours, etc.), you could just as easily shuck the whole “Jesus” tripe and move to a nation like Iran where the laws are more to your liking. Seriously, it’s the same god.
7. Your definitions of words are useless, as you cannot prove that your word “marry” came from your imaginary friend/overlord. Also, the reason you cannot define a square circle is not limited to the fact that they do not exist, but also encompasses the fact that you probably can’t do math very well.
8. You have seven degrees, three from a clown college, and lots of people enjoyed clown college. Why should we give any credence to your statement that “AH HAD FUN THAR, GOT TA PLAY DRESS UP AND SING SONGS AND PLAY ON THA COMPUTER”?
9. The word is “whining,” but someone paid a cent for it, as private education costs money. Are you not familiar with how grants and scholarships work?
10. At least we can prove Harding exists, and that it is a clown college. But you reveal the Fundamentalist Christian mindset in your comment. Fundamentalist Christian heaven only works when other people burn in hell. This is because most Fundamentalists are bitter, uneducated hicks who, without the opiate provided by the “ask no question, use no brains” worldview that wingnut Fundamentalism provides, would have absolutely no reason to have self esteem. Unfortunately, it betrays itself, as wingnuts like yourself bark and drool about “coastal elitists,” who you secretly understand are happier than you, smarter than you, better educated than you, probably more attractive than you, and are wearing their underpants frontways and their shoes on the correct feet.
Ha ha, you’re just jealous because we’re wearing shoes.
(I’m an Arky, so that’s an arrow I can shoot. Some of us get out and go to grown-up-land. Deal with it.)
Seven diploma-mill degrees, Joel, and you can’t even write a comment without accusing gays of bestiality and preening that you’re richer and smarter than God, and you don’t need to document your claims — you just call them “Biblical” and that makes them so.
Impressive.
Congratulations, Joel, you’re not Christian — just elitist and arrogant.
OH CRAP, I forgot to add a random quote at the end like you did, Joel.
Here goes:
“Cotton candy, sweet and low, let me see your tootsee roll
Here we go, come on, tootsie roll, come on, tootsee roll
Let me see your tootsee roll
Come on, tootsie roll, just dip that tootsee roll and tootsee roll
Here we go tootsee roll
I feel a whoop comin up, a whoop comin up,
Just feel a whoop comin up, a whoop comin up…”
