It’s a good question, and it’s something that everybody can see, except, of course, White Evangelical Christians. It’s sort of amazing to liberal believers, atheists, agnostics, etc., that these people, who so fervently scream about how they’re the Real Christians, the ones who really have been Saved By The Blood Of Jesus, often have little to nothing in common with the deity they claim to worship. A new study has come out which addresses this very topic:
The results from a recent poll published by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life () reveal what social scientists have known for a long time: White Evangelical Christians are the group least likely to support politicians or policies that reflect the actual teachings of Jesus. It is perhaps one of the strangest, most dumb-founding ironies in contemporary American culture. Evangelical Christians, who most fiercely proclaim to have a personal relationship with Christ, who most confidently declare their belief that the Bible is the inerrant word of God, who go to church on a regular basis, pray daily, listen to Christian music, and place God and His Only Begotten Son at the center of their lives, are simultaneously the very people most likely to reject his teachings and despise his radical message.
Jesus unambiguously preached mercy and forgiveness. These are supposed to be cardinal virtues of the Christian faith. And yet Evangelicals are the most supportive of the death penalty, draconian sentencing, punitive punishment over rehabilitation, and the governmental use of torture. Jesus exhorted humans to be loving, peaceful, and non-violent. And yet Evangelicals are the group of Americans most supportive of easy-access weaponry, little-to-no regulation of handgun and semi-automatic gun ownership, not to mention the violent military invasion of various countries around the world. Jesus was very clear that the pursuit of wealth was inimical to the Kingdom of God, that the rich are to be condemned, and that to be a follower of Him means to give one’s money to the poor. And yet Evangelicals are the most supportive of corporate greed and capitalistic excess, and they are the most opposed to institutional help for the nation’s poor — especially poor children. They hate anything that smacks of “socialism,” even though that is essentially what their Savior preached. They despise food stamp programs, subsidies for schools, hospitals, job training — anything that might dare to help out those in need. Even though helping out those in need was exactly what Jesus urged humans to do. In short, Evangelicals are that segment of America which is the most pro-militaristic, pro-gun, and pro-corporate, while simultaneously claiming to be most ardent lovers of the Prince of Peace.
Oh, but here is the thing, and it is a lightbulb moment:
Evangelicals don’t exactly hate Jesus — as we’ve provocatively asserted in the title of this piece. They do love him dearly. But not because of what he tried to teach humanity. Rather, Evangelicals love Jesus for what he does for them. Through his magical grace, and by shedding his precious blood, Jesus saves Evangelicals from everlasting torture in hell, and guarantees them a premium, luxury villa in heaven. For this, and this only, they love him.
In other words, conservative Evangelicals react to Jesus the same way they react to everything else: “What is in it for ME?”
Now think about it. This sort of selfish mentality also informs their reactions to things like marriage equality, because people who are only concerned with themselves tend to play victim when somebody else threatens to outdo them in quality of life, love, happiness, etc. They have so long convinced themselves that they are The Elect, and that their system of morality is the best one, so it really messes them up to consider that the rest of the population has no use for their patriarchal system, for their rigid shame-inducing lifestyle, or anything else about them, really. It’s the same mentality that has retirees on Medicare joining the anti-union pitchfork-fest in Wisconsin. That’s why it’s really not surprising that conservative, fundamentalist Christians are the most likely demographic when it comes to supporting selfish, awful policies that do nothing but hurt people.
Indeed, in my Evangelical upbringing, there was an inordinate focus on the idea of grace, but not in a humane sort of way. It was a sort of grace that was offered to Evangelical Christians for no reason other than that God had chosen us. There were always banal ramblings from the pulpit about how this inherently meant we weren’t better than anyone else, because we weren’t elect by our own merit. But at the end of the day, just the same, we were the elect. We got ours. This was a Calvinist tradition, but it’s much the same in the more Baptist, Arminian framework. The only difference is that the Baptists knew well enough that they’d better accept Jesus Christ into their hearts, thus making them elect. The others who didn’t? We got ours.
It’s useful to remember these sorts of things, when considering the fight for equal rights. We’re dealing with people who have been trained to be selfish, to view this life as merely a stepping stone to a magical paradise fantasy land, the entry into which they have not earned, but that they have nonetheless received.
In other words, screw the rest of y’all, you’ll be sorry when we’re all in Heaven!

These misguided bigots have joined the ‘club’ and attend church every week and think that makes them ‘Christians’. They cannot understand that they are the very hypocrites that Jesus condemns. These fools would crucify Jesus all over again … for he is the homeless guy on the street corner, the gay, the transgender, the placard-waving civil rights activist, the disabled, the poor, the mother who relies on state handouts to feed her kids …
Absolutely scathing. I’m glad this study was done, I had been saying this about evangelicals for years. It’s been obvious to anyone who even listens a little bit to the rhetoric in this country. Will share!!
Let’s be fair. The teachings of Jesus as recorded in the NT had nothing to do with government. Instituting NT principles into law is just as wrong as instituting OT principles into law.
Actually, Jesus said a lot about government, and moreover, Jesus said a hell of a lot about people, and as government is made up of, cough, AHEM!, people, my god.
If they ever met Jesus they’d crucify him all over again. If they were truthful they’d call themselves Levitical Paulians, for there’s nothing of Jesus’ teachings in what they live or preach.
Excellent commentary Evan!
Evan……… OUCH!
They don’t seem to be cognizant of the fact that if God’s nature really were like they believe it is, he would be a total a*****e. But then people tend to project their own natures onto their God concepts.
Man! As a non-white, ordained, progressive Evangelical, I could not agree more. It always baffles me when folks ask me how I can be so progressive. I say, with Campolo, “I am as liberal as the grace of God…” I honestly do not get the disconnect.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer had a term for what Evangelicals practice: cheap grace. Say you’re saved and smirk.
I recently read some science on religion. Seems that religious attendance elevates the believer by releasing serotonin. Challenge the believer–thus challenging their feeling of high status–and that releases chemicals, such as cortisol–that makes them feel low, hence how nasty christians get when engaged in a rational discussion about religion.
This seems to explain white evangelical christianity to me. It is about feeling superior and that is it. It has nothing to do with morality or decency, just “not only am I holier than thou, but I’m better than thou.”
Therefore, it seems that the appeal of religion to many is that it makes them feel superior. I imagine the same thing goes on in the black christian: elevating the heterosexual christian initiates a chemical reaction that makes the straight believer feel superior. Challenge that with say, Gay Marriage, and the believer is plunged into chemical inferiority.
I imagine the lower on the social scale one is the more important religious status is.
Here’s a link to a brief commentary on the subject:

well, didn’t Jesus sum it up….in what he said….about the religionists of that day,
something like;”you hear not my words becasue you are not of God”
we who “do” know God in Jesus need not to spend more time with these nincompoops other than to expose their falshood to help true seekers of truth.
Thanks for facilitating this, Wayne! God Bless you!
I have discovered that not only is Right Wing idol Ayn Rand openly hostile to Christianity, but according to the Marburg Journal of Religion (June 2001) Anton La Vey, himself, described Satanism as “just Ayn Rand’s philosophy with ceremony and ritual added”

That’s why white Evangelicals and the Republican Party are “a match made in Heaven.”
I guess I missed this excellent post the first time, so thanks to Mandy for bringing it forward again.
Great piece! I have never understood why the right wing Christians who claim to be so devout, and even want a Christian theocracy, utterly reject Jesus as a philosopher. On more than one occasion when a fundamentalist Christian lectured me on how they thought the US is a ‘Christian nation’, I asked them ‘so can i assume you support Jesus’s teachings about helping the poor, feeding the hungry and aiding the sick’? In every instance the Christians responsse to my comment was profanity, and one even threatened me with violence. It is interestung how atheists, agnostics and non-Christians seem to have a much greater understanding and respect for what Jesus actually preached, than what the Fundamentalist Christians insist he preached. Followers of Jesus SHOULD put helping the poor and the needly at the forefront of their beliefs- Those who turn thier backs on the poor and suffering are NOT followers of jesus Christ.
Great synopsis of the plight of the evangelical. I can honestly say I’m ashamed to be a believer in the United States today. Back in the day we were more socially conscience then we are today. White evangelicals sit back and are okay with the racism hurled at Obama on the daily, okay with crony capitalism, okay with getting rid of the social safety in the name of free enterprise. People of color recognize this and know that because the system is broken and against you you can’t necessarily rely on “pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps”. Jesus was socially conscience the torah is flooded with social justice verses. Thank you for this great article.
This article made my day. My sister married a minister at 23. He was 21. They live in Australia. He makes 40K a year. They are pregnant with twins. Once these two are born, they will become a family of 7. They live off the government and the church provides them with a house. All of my life, my sister has been the most selfish person I have ever known. She used to call me evil when I was only four years old. Later, as a teenager, she stole money from me. She never comes home to visit America, unless of course it is a lavish vacation for her Australian family members. She has missed every major milestone in my life. She thinks black people and any non-believer are beneath her, including her own parents. Nonetheless, the country of Australia, which is one of the most atheist, makes her life possible. What do I know though, I am a single American liberal, paying my own bills, and bearly getting by. To my sister, I am a complete disgrace for not yet being married. Yup, I must say, I don’t at all support evangelical Christianity. It leads to the selfish belief that some people are saved and others are not. We all have a choice between love or fear. I choose love. The people who love the most, will in the end, get the most love back. “God is a concept by which we measure pain.” Lennon said that, years before an evangelical Christian put 4 bullets into his back in front of his wife. Beware of the golden calf people, they are everywhere. Most of them run the world’s largest churches, and governments. It is all about divide, conquer and control. I will always love my nephews and nieces, and I hope that one day, their eyes open. *PEACE*
