Joe has an amazing quote from Tom DeRosa, the executive director of the Creation Studies Institute. Read it slowly, and maybe out loud in a funny voice [Foghorn Leghorn?], so you can take it all in:
“From the patriarchal days of Sodom and Gomorrah to the Law of Moses to the New Testament, God’s Word consistently declares that homosexuality is sin and warns of the condemnation it brings to the individuals who practice it and to societies that promote it. Indeed, the rampant teaching of evolution in our schools that is effectively undermining belief in God and absolute moral standards is not only creating an atmosphere of ‘tolerance’ for homosexuality, but for just about anything.
“As the truism goes, ‘Without God, everything is permissible.’ So, in reality, there’s nothing to prevent the same rationale being used today to justify homosexuality and homosexual marriage from being used tomorrow to sanction polygamy or pedophilia or, as one very honest evolutionist wrote a while back (a piece that quickly disappeared from public view), if evolution is true, then rape is a very valid and/or efficient way for a man to spread his genes. After all, why not? It’s the survival of the fittest. Of course, in a purely evolutionary world, homosexuals would naturally be bred out of existence, as well. But you won’t hear that from pro-evolution advocates.”
You see, teaching evolution, even though it is established scientific fact, creates an “atmosphere” that makes it okay to be gay. Also, slippery slopes and false claims about morality coming from God, etc. Tie it up with a truly stupid statement which shows just how little this “creation science” guy understands evolution, his personal boogeyman, about homosexuals being “bred out of existence” — as if science is that simple — and you have one of the best wingnut quotes I have ever seen, at least this week. But it’s only Monday.

What fresh hell is THIS?
“‘Without God, everything is permissible?” is an old truism? I’ve never heard it before in my life (and I’m fairly old).
Wait a sec . . . whatever happened to “With God, all things are possible” (including ‘the gheys’)?
And WHO is this “very honest evolutionist” who “wrote a while back (a piece that quickly disappeared from public view)”?
I smell burning pants someplace.
OK, let’s be clear about Darwin and evolution. First off, it is ‘survival of the fittest’, not strongest, not most normal. Second, evolution is a scientific theory. By its very nature, a theory is open to questions and the possibility of disproof at some later point of empirical research. On the other hand, for Biblical literalists, the Bible is FACT and anything anyone outside their closed circle might present to show any fallacies is simply the Work of the Devil.
This could just as easily be changed to: “With God everything is permissible.”
Religious nuts always do what they want and blame their interpretation of scripture or say that God spoke to them. I’m not sure that belief in God inhibits people from wrongdoing any more than non-belief.
What a terribly weak and unsupported argument.
Abraham’s God-trolls somehow got ahold of a mic again. Glad it’s all just mythology to the certifiably sane.
If you want to make a fundie’s head explode when they bring up Sodom and Gammorah, ask them if they agree with the story’s clear message that it’s okay for a man to offer up his virgin daughters to be gang-raped.
And I’m willing to bet money that he wouldn’t be able to describe pleiotropy and epistasis if someone asked him.
One aspect of modern evolution theory is the importance of survival by cooperation, so it’s not just dog eat dog. And as for his dubious ‘evolutionist’ quote,….’ if evolution is true, then rape is a very valid and/or efficient way for a man to spread his genes…’; I can say as a practicing Episcopalian, that some of our greatest theological minds have also stated some equality extreme and absurd positions. To wit, the eminent Thomas Aquinas thought that rape wasn’t as sinful as masturbation or homosexuality, because ‘at least it might result in a baby’. Wingnuts should do their homework before throwing stones at others.
Reed, That quote is actually a paraphrasing from “The Brother’s Karamazov” “Without God all things are permitted”.
According to the bible rape is just fine as long as the rapist marries his victim.
schools shouldn’t be teaching creationism because it is a Federally funded institution, creationism should not be taught because public schools are NOT religions schools and creationism has NO scientific backing.
Teaching about god has not stopped the local pastor, priest or rabbi from raping the child in the congregation. In my opinion religion ONLY breads intolerance….what would this world be without religion…BETTER OFF!
Considering some of the things Christians and Muslims do in the name of their “deeply held religious beliefs” they really shouldn’t be slamming godlessness.
“But you won’t hear that from pro-evolution advocates.”
That’s because evolution isn’t a moral code, moron, and homosexuality fits within it just fine.
But hey, he’s got a point. In fact, the same can be said about heliocentrism! If we teach children that the earth isn’t the center of the universe, then they’ll grow up believing that a god didn’t specially create them to be his precious favorite playthings, which would just support the idea that they’re all mindless molecules and little more than animals, and then they’ll all kill and eat each other and society will collapse!
‘Cause that’s what animals do. All the time. Always.
“[I]n a purely evolutionary world, homosexuals would naturally be bred out of existence, as well.”
So, if evolution were true, we wouldn’t have any homosexuals.
But since evolution is not true, and we do have homosexuals, that must mean that God creates homosexuals! Where else would they come from? :-)
Just trying to follow DeRosa’s line of thinking…and it appears he painted himself into a corner on this one.
How exactly would homosexuals be bred out of existence? My parents were straight and managed to produce one, as have millions of other straight people since human beings first appeared on the planet.
*headdesk*
I’m too tired to be clever or witty right now. All I have is:
LOLWUT.
Aside from the fact that this is all simply ridiculous, far-fetched and incorrect. Religious extremists will always find a way to bend the bible to fit their agenda.
Imagine if proper sexual education INCLUDING the LBGTQ community was actually PROPERLY taught everywhere, in all schools. From the very beginning, none of this only abstinence non-sense, and not even showing people how to use condoms.
We all could have possibly avoided the entire “gay disease” AIDs epidemic between the 60s-90s. Granted there’s still drug usage, and rape. Safe sex is still best, a lot of heterosexuals don’t use it as it should be used. As is evident by all the teen pregnancies.
what’s so sad about all this “evolution is false b******t” is the reality that once science points to proof that makes you question your faith, people try to bash it with every lame possibility they think of. But when science tells you that if your wife or husband has cancer and you can beat it with Chemotherapy, you guys are sucking science dick. Get rid of the God issue and teach evolution. Evolution is amazing and we see it with the changing of proteins in viruses to stay alive and mutate to be airborne all the time. Get rid of the bible and religion in general. If 95% of scientists have deemed evolution to be real and you, a non scientist, think it’s b******t then maybe you do need to question your judgment. Don’t deny evolution based on faith. Deny on scientific proof and facts, which does not exist. Let’s stop teaching stupidity to our children and teach them how to think. Not what to think. You never know. One day we might be able to get rid of this God problem we have in America. Free thinkers stand up.
