Even though every major poll taken lately shows that the American people support marriage equality, the bigot-controlled Minnesota legislature went ahead and approved a bill to put an anti-gay marriage amendment on the state’s 2012 ballot.  The sane governor of that state, Mark Dayton, symbolically vetoed the bill — symbolic because it will still be on the ballot for the voters to decide.

Anti-gay bigots like Maggie Gallagher and Brian Brown like to bark over and over again about the fact that “31 states have voted [against gay people],” which, to them, means that they will keep doing so.  They ignore the trend lines at their own peril, as they will probably need jobs as they progress toward old age.  Unfortunately for them, the fact of the matter is that bigots die off every year, only to be replaced by equality supporting eighteen year olds.  It’s a hard fact for them to take, we know, but it is still a fact.  And Minnesota just might be the first state to change the game:

[S]ame-sex marriage advocates say they believe there’s a good chance, given changing attitudes toward gay unions, that voters in Minnesota could become the first to reject such an amendment.

The reason for that optimism? A slew of recent national polls — from Gallup to CNN — have found that for the first time since pollsters started asking, a majority of Americans surveyed say they support same-sex marriage.

A recent Star Tribune Minnesota Poll also found that 55 percent of state residents surveyed said they oppose the proposed gay marriage ban amendment.

“We’re in a cultural shift on this,” says Michael Cole-Schwartz, also of HRC. “The polls are indicative of a larger movement.”

Indeed they are. And again, every major poll taken in the past several months has shown majority support for marriage equality.  So watch Brian Brown of the National Organization for Marriage [hate group designation likely forthcoming] tying himself into knots, sticking his head in the sand, and ignoring reality:

“People doing other polls want to get the results they’re getting,” says Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, a powerhouse behind efforts to prohibit gay marriage.

His organization commissioned a poll in Minnesota, where state law already defines marriage as between a man and a woman, that found that 57 percent of those surveyed opposed same-sex marriage.

The poll was conducted by Gary Lawrence, a Mormon writer and pollster who has been closely involved in anti-gay marriage efforts in California that have been heavily funded by Mormons.

Oh yeah, Brian, everybody is in a conspiracy against your bigoted face. Just keep telling yourself that only you and your moron Mormon pollster know the real story. God, dude. Get a JOB, and stop being an embarrassment to your family.
