Tracy Morgan has apologized for, and thus confirmed, the anti-gay meltdown he had in Nashville onstage at the Ryman Auditorium:
“I want to apologize to my fans and the gay and lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville. I’m not a hateful person and don’t condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.”
We at Truth Wins Out appreciate Tracy’s apology. We are glad that he recognizes that he hurt and offended people. However, questions remain. When Michael Richards and Mel Gibson had their respective meltdowns, people rightly asked where those sentiments actually came from. And the fact of the matter is, parts of Tracy’s Nashville rant have appeared in earlier performances.
So we wonder: Where do Tracy Morgan’s anti-gay sentiments come from? What leads him to go only so far with anti-gay sentiments and then suddenly let loose with one of the most vicious tirades imaginable? Does he understand why people — LGBT or not, in Tennessee and beyond — were so hurt by what he said?
Again, we appreciate that he recognized a need to come forward and apologize. But is the damage already done? Tracy Morgan should be an “equal-opportunity jokester.” Sarah Silverman, Lisa Lampanelli and Zack Galiafanakis are. Richard Pryor certainly was. In this case, though, there still seems to be a certain animus involved, as well as a pattern, that we don’t quite understand. Will this be the last time Tracy Morgan makes the news for unleashing anger against gay people? We certainly hope so, but only Tracy Morgan can effectively answer these questions.

A “choice of words” is when you say like, one word that’s offensive. If his tirade went on for as long as it is alleged, that’s more than a choice of words – that’s a hateful mind.

It is his ignorance, not choice of words, that he should apologize for. His comments were mean-spirited and were MEANT to be mean-spirited. I doubt that we have heard the last of these hateful beliefs from Mr. Morgan.
He should be fired. He has advocated violence against gay people, minimized bullying, and even threatened his own son. What he has done is far worse than anything Michael Richards or Kobe Bryant said.
His apology doesn’t explain away what he CHOSE to say in the first place, and trying to put it in the context of being a “jokester” isn’t exactly helpful.
And that “choice of words” was a dead giveaway. It’s one of the hallmarks of a faux apology, on the level of “I’m so sorry my words offended anybody” (translation: I’m not saying I’m sorry for what I said but I’m sure sorry I’m getting bad PR!). There’s a suggestion there that the substance was what he really meant; he just didn’t say it very well.

Callous, thoughtless, ignorant and just a wee bit vicious, Tracy Morgan’s comments will forever be attached to his future career. God help his son.
I sure hope that his son doesn’t turn out to be anything his father doesn’t approve of…I mean you never know…this hater might well stab his son.
I’d hope that he means what he has said, but given the history of rants, I suspect he is only sorry he was caught and called out on it.
I agree…this is FAR BEYOND anything Kobe Bryant said. When you advocate stabbing your own child because of your hatred/constmept for GLBT people, it is time to look deep in your own soul and find out why you are that way and do something about it.
Where the sentiments came from? They came from him and his beliefs. He tried to play them as a comedic, joking rant, but that is like trying to make comedy out of the Holocaust or the KKK hangings of innocent blacks. How can that be done? The total insensitivity and hatred required would be obvious and so it was here. He believes what he said as surely as the sun always rises. The apology is necessary for his career and that’s all. AND, there are still plenty of people who will laugh at such hatred cloaked as comedy. Most of his audience did.
I was hoping it was some kind of performance art piece-that he was trying illustrate how insane homophobia is. If it was, it was too poorly executed to be funny. And if it was a sincere expression of his beliefs, it was to ignorant and revolting to be funny.
The truth is finally coming out. On E!, Tracy said his father died of AIDS in 1987. Now we are getting to the root of why Tracy hates gay people so deeply and wants to murder them. I just wish he would be more honest instead of acting like he instantly changed overnight. Plus, I would love to find out what message he would like to give to all his fans at that show who cheered and applauded his anti-gay murder threats.
Obviously, his “sentiments” come from his repulsion at male “santoruming” as you’d call it. But why appreciate his “apology” when it’s so obviously ungenuine? He’s probably privately telling his buddies how much more he hates guys like you and besen now, while he’s publicly going through the cartoon kabuki of laughable “i’m so sorry…”.
