I’m completely not surprised by this, as Rudy Giuliani has never struck me as a man of any sort of integrity:
The gay car dealer who opened his home to Rudy Giuliani in 2001 during his humiliating divorce battle says the former mayor offered to preside at his wedding if same-sex marriage were ever legalized — but is now ducking his calls to make good on the offer.
“I asked if he would marry us,” recalled Howard Koeppel, the unlikely provider of an emergency Midtown crash pad to Giuliani for six months when his marriage to Donna Hanover was crumbling and Gracie Mansion was a war zone.
“He said, ‘Howard, I don’t ever do anything that’s not legal. If it becomes legal in New York, you’ll be one of the first ones I would marry.’ “
Ten years later, Koeppel is distressed that his former house guest hasn’t returned the many calls he began making before the legislation was passed last week.
A political consultant in the piece suggests that Rudy’s reticence might have something to do with his sad but ongoing presidential ambitions. Rudy: you will never be president. Go keep a promise to the gays who took you in during one of your many divorces.
[h/t The Awl]

Another hetero serial polygamist who ditches gays who want to marry.
Is Rudy anti-gay? I don’t think so, but correct me if I’m wrong. If he’s not anti-gay, let’s leave him alone.
Rudy is whatever he thinks he has to be, depending on whether or not he’s running for president at the time.
Jack, even if Rudy were otherwise pro-gay his inaction in this case is still wrong.
I suspect Rudy’s a narcissist. He told this couple after they did him a kindness that he would do something nice–it was all about him at the time. It’s still all about him, and even after this couple defended him when he suddenly became anti-gay in the hopes of getting the nomination from the GOP base. They should be glad Rudy won’t officiate their ceremony–it wouldn’t be about them, it would become about him.
Jack, I don’t see people harassing Rudy Giuliani.
Nobody answered my question. Is Rudy now anti-gay?
And how do we know that he didn’t have a falling out with these guys over something else? He openly lived with two gay guys. That doesn’t sound anti-gay to me, but he may have taken positions that I’m not aware of. Please fill me in.
Daniel,
How do you know that this is why Rudy doesn’t return their calls and it’s not some other type of falling out between them. It sounds like you’ve got the inside scoop, so fill us all in on the details.
Jack, I said “I suspect”. Why are you so defensive of Rudy Guliani? He’s not been especially friendly to the gay community of late (since he started running for President). And really, I’ll believe what Howard Koeppel says until I hear any different.
And Jack I realize it wasn’t formed as a question so I will ask it as one;
Jack, who is harrassing Rudy Giuliani that you feel we need to “leave him alone”.
So some of Rudy’s gay friends think he’s not being a good friend anymore. Whatever. Why is this catty, gossipy post about Rudy worthy to be on this site, but if it was Obama who did this, not a word would be said. Evan, have you guys gotten a post on here yet about Obama asserting the other day that gay marriage should be a state’s rights issue along with your reaction to that assertion. That would actually be meaningful. I can’t find that post, but point me in the right direction if you’ve got it on here. If not, I assume you’re still writing it up.
and I heard that Daniel didn’t attend a birthday party for his neighbor, and I heard that Evan didn’t call his college roommate to tell him was going to be in town, blah, blah, blah…
Jack — your obsession with Obama is absurd and counter-productive. I’ve commented more on Obama than most people — but I am not under the delusion that his opinion on the matter is at the very essence of my existence. If you want my opinion on Obama go buy Tracy Baim’s book, “Obama and the Gays”. I’ve commented quite enough.

So there won’t be anything on here about Obama’s latest statement on gay marriage? Seriously?
Jack, I’ll probably say something about it, but considering the complexity of the issue and the apparent long game strategy of the administration, I’m just not going to run around butthurt about the fact that
the man I thought I would spend my life with, who would love me tenderly and bring me chocolates every daythe President is acting like a politician and trying to game every possible outcome of his reelection chances in a, yes, vulnerable election, due to the fact that the American people are fairly stupid when it comes to the cause and effect of the economy, and very possibly being reticent because he wants to deny the GOP the ability to use this as a wedge issue during the 2012 elections, rather than bowing before me and giving me the affirmation I so desperately crave from him.Wayne,
Are your comments on Obama on this website? Can you provide links to those also? Or is there a search function? I couldn’t find it.
Thanks!
Evan,
So just to make sure that I understand your response, you won’t say anything negative about Obama, ever? Did I get the essence of your answer?
OMG, we talk about Obama all the time.
Evan,
Is there ANYTHING, anything at all, that would cause you to question Obama? If he set off a nuclear bomb at a Pride parade, would that do it?
If you search on Google “site:truthwinsout.org ‘Barack Obama,’” you’ll see that we have said many things about the Obama administration, positive and negative.
We just don’t get any psychological satisfaction out of assuming that the preznit secretly hates us and is our enemy. Apparently you do. From my own analysis of the situation, and the way he has conducted himself on gay issues from the beginning, my sense is that there is a very complex long game going on here.
Yes, I would be pissed if he set off a nuclear bomb at a pride parade, Jack. The difference between you and me is that I don’t react to Obama as a jilted lover, and therefore would never assume that setting off a nuclear bomb at a pride parade would be a reasonable hypothetical.
Ok, I’ll do a search on google, but give me one link to an op/ed where you really call Obama to task. I may be wrong on this one.
No you don’t act like a jilted lover. You act like the guy who just desperately wants the straight man to love him.
No, I was saying that the gays who obsess over and freak out over every single tiny time Obama says/does something they don’t like pertaining to gays, act like jilted lovers.
I’m simply pragmatic. The president isn’t going to be the one to wave the magic wand on this issue anyway. The Supreme Court, most likely, will. Obama’s record of appointing justices who will most likely vote in every instance for our equality, is 100%. In the next presidential term, there will be a couple of retirements, most likely, but unless we are very, very lucky, they are not going to come from the conservative side. Ginsburg will go, to be sure, as she is suffering from pancreatic cancer. So, pardon me if I’m a little bit more concerned about Obama being in office in 2013 when a lot of these cases are likely to be at SCOTUS, so that he may at least keep the current balance of the court where it is, which I believe tilts slightly in our favor due to Kennedy’s history, rather than screaming and crying over why the president hasn’t returned my call and it’s been like a whole week and that date was so fun I thought I’d really met a good one this time but I guess not so I’m going to go drink bad white zin and listen to Sarah McLachlan now OMGOMGOMG!
… talk about hysterical yammering.
okay here is a negative press release from you guys from 2008. Do you still stand by this?
http://www.truthwinsout.org/pressreleases/2008/12/1262/
Indeed! We were also one of the lead groups that went after him on Donnie McClurkin.
Jack, you still haven’t answered the question about who exactly it is that’s harrassing Giuliani. Then, strangely, you go into your obsessive compulsive complaints about TWO being supportive of Obama who has actually done some good work (though not enough) for gay people while talking about a politician (Giuliani) who sold us out. And hysterical yammering describes many of your posts perfectly (“and I heard that Daniel didn’t attend a birthday party for his neighbor, and I heard that Evan didn’t call his college roommate to tell him was going to be in town, blah, blah, blah…” As though either of these examples compares with promising to officiate at someone’s wedding then not returning their phone calls.)
Really, Jack, you’ve gone over the edge.
One more point about Giuliani–whenever he brings up his non-support of gay marriage he always says it’s because “I’m Catholic”–the Catholic Church also opposes divorce and adultery but that seems to have been brushed aside.
“27.okay here is a negative press release from you guys from 2008. Do you still stand by this?”
Jack, really? Did you read any of the articles Evan and Wayne have written? Their saying to support him because the alternative is worse in no way contradicts the press release you posted.
Jack it is 2010. Much has changed. We still oppose Rick Warren’s role. We still oppose Obama’s position on marriage. We still hope he changes his mind and does more for the LGBT community.
But….he is by far the best candidate for president for the LGBT community. Thus, it would be nihilistic to help another candidate who would significantly harm us. That is our position.
Daniel, when did I say someone was “harrassing” Rudy?
I said that this is an unsubstantiated catty gossipy post for nothing more than character assasination. And yet, Wayne and Evan don’t take Obama to task for serious issues.
Robin,
I didn’t say that it contradicts this post. I said that I want them to speak out when Obama doesn’t do right by the gay community, something that I feel they refuse to do. I’m proud of the article they wrote before.
Wayne, so that means that gays can’t have any criticisms of Obama now?
Robin,
So do you think that supporting Obama means that we now can’t call him to task for anything?
@Robin:
You are smart and a good reader! ;-)
“Wayne, so that means that gays can’t have any criticisms of Obama now?”
It must be strange to live in a world where the only two colors are black and white. It’s the same world fundamentalists live in. There is absolutely no gray area. Either you are Best Friend Ever or you are Godforsaken Enemy.
Evan,
You are the one with black and white thinking! If Obama ends up being the Democratic nominee, I will certainly vote for him. That doesn’t mean that I need to pretend that he is perfect or even all that great. The fact that you don’t feel confident enough to criticize him or compliment as the case warrants shows your lack of any gray area. I see nothing but black and white in your arguments.
Example of black and white thinking:
Rudy = bad
Obama = good
Example of examining the gray areas:
Obama has done some good things we should thank him for.
Obama has not done things that we should call him to account for.
Robin,
Will it be ok to criticize Obama AFTER he is elected for a second term? Would that be ok for me to do?
Jack, this conversation isn’t about pretending Obama is perfect, it’s about the fact that you come in here and hijack five threads a week screaming and moaning about how Obama is just THE WORST! It’s so Firebagger, and it’s tiresome.
And it also shows an astonishing reading comprehension problem, which I recognize but do not have the time to help ameliorate.
Oh, I think I comprehend your writing very well. You have made it clear that you will NOT, under any circumstances critize our President.
and yes, I am a Hillary Clinton supporter. was and still am. I make NO apologies for that.
Except that we have and do, but you’re still butthurt over Hillary losing fair and square in 2008. Got it. Your preemptive need to point that out just told me the whole story. Do you still read PUMA blogs?
I’m with Howard Dean as it relates to the “media’s” treatment of Hillary in 2008. You might want to look that up.
However, I did vote for Obama in the general, if you must know. No “protest” vote here.
Oh, I was there during the entire election. I’m not 12.
But Dean was wrong about why Hillary lost. Hillary hired shitty people like Mark Penn who didn’t even understand the Democratic party’s delegate process, and Obama outgamed them at every turn. That is why he won.
Well, I disagree. In my view, Obama was chosen by the Democratic establishment and the media and then Hillary’s throat was cut. But I know I won’t convince you of that, so whatevs.
Hillary would have a much better chance of winning the general election in 2012 if we had the balls to dump Obama, but very few people are willing to say that the emperor has no clothes!
Evan, I think at this point it’s pretty clear that Jack’s not really paying attention. He’s decided that TWO is some kind of Obama zombie website and no actual evidence will get through. He’s already hijacked this thread and he’ll probably keep doing it.
And actually, Hillary and Obama are pretty much word-for-word with each other when it comes to gay issues. I voted for her in the primary but it’s also pretty clear she’s as hawkish–or maybe even more hawkish than Obama.
i know, i know… PIPE DREAM! figures I’d save your fingers the typing.
Daniel,
Do you ever disagree with Evan or are you his lap dog?
