Jeremy just had a novel idea for Maggie Gallagher, who is on the whine-trail this week about marriage supposedly being destroyed, redefined, being taken over by the government, blah blah blah, etc. For instance, she said this:
“Gay marriage is not an increase in liberty; it is a government takeover of an institution that government did not create and should not redefine.
When the government endorses a lie about human nature, there will be consequences.”
Yeah, whatever, Maggie. We still haven’t seen YOUR traditionally wed husband and you still don’t wear a wedding ring. Which leads to Jeremy’s idea:
If Maggie thinks marriage had been subjected to government takeover, then she and every single married person who agrees with her needs to return the marriage license that he or she obtained from the state.
DAMN RIGHT SHE SHOULD! Maggie, Brian Brown, whatever other Religious Right goons live in marriage equality states: if your marriage has been devalued, redefined, destroyed, taken over by the government, or whatever else, due to the inclusion of gay people in the institution, then return your now worthless marriage license and fend for yourself without the benefits granted to you by the state.
We are waiting with bated breath. Unless you really don’t believe your own BS and this is just about heterosexual supremacy, patriarchy and extreme butthurtness over the fact that the American people lose more respect for you every single day…

Don’t forget that she still doesn’t use her husband’s last name.
I’m willing they won’t because it is pretty much about heterosexist supremacy and butthurtness that the NYC legislature DARED go against the Maggot’s wishes and established marriage equality in the state.
When are people gonna see through this pompous a*s? I guess like Lindsey Brigman says in the ABYSS “we all see what we want to see.”
“Taken over by the government.” I like that. The government has been all over marriage like stink on s**t for centuries; the moment a heterosexual couple signs that marriage license (which need NOT be accompanied by a church wedding, sorry Maggot), they are eligible for more than a thousand benefits and responsibilities at the Federal level and even more at the state level, the number of benefits varying from state to state but they go into effect immediately upon signing the license.
“When the government endorses a lie about human nature, there will be consequences.”
I like that one too. Since there have always been LGBT persons in every civilization since the beginning of recorded history, the argument that it is somehow not a part of “human nature” is, to say the least, specious.
But then again I have long since learned not to expect anything remotely resembling the truth from NOM and Maggie the Hutt.
Don’t let her fool you…she could care less about traditional marriage. The only thing she cares about is her paycheck. She would have a hard time finding a six figure paycheck in a traditional job …
And remember, Maggie is married to a Hindu – Raman Srivastav. For Maggie’s church and NOM’s donors, traditional marriage is definitely NOT between one Catholic and one Hindu. It’s no wonder she keeps Raman hidden away in the attic.
Yet strident anti-gay activist Gallagher supports government takeover of marriage for the sole purpose of making it a special right for those who sleep with the opposite sex. You can take any complaint by anti-gay activists about pro-equality Americans and find that it is the very thing they themselves are doing. Projection is their way of deflecting the attention away from their evil anti-gay agenda. It’s not working so well these days.
Richard, that point should be played up.
In the traditional (not far right wing) understanding of Christianity, such a marriage (Christian + Hindu) would be forbidden! It is called being u”nequally yoked”. It is only allowed if one becomes a Christian AFTER the two of you were married. That should be pulled out OVER AND OVER AND OVER with her, in public.
Now, some will say “her religious life is not my business”, and in most situations, you would be correct. BUT, she makes a (GOOD) living attacking us, and doing it often under the guise of her radical, right wing Catholic religion, so she is FAIR game I say.
As per people seeing through her…well, in New York, I think the majority do. She knows this, and she knows (realistically) that New York state will maintain Gay marriage. If Mass. was the beaches of Normandy, and the other (lets face it, small) states were bridgeheads, New York is like reoccupying 2/3 of France. There is still a lot of fighting to do, but the tide of the war is turned, and she knows it. ;)
I listen (kicks and giggles and to know mine enemy) to Christian radio. They are reacting differently to this than they have to the earlier states. I hear a lot of anger, but now…resignation. And a lot of “we are the victims now!” whining. When DADT is finally done away with in a few months, I suspect it, along with the NY victory, will break the backbone of the anti gay movement. Till now, they were fighting to win.
Now, they are going to be fighting just on principal…and no one fights with as much passion when they know they are gonna’ lose.
Gene, I too listen to xtian radio to know my enemy & it can be a gruesome experience. I’ve been listening this week to that nutcase Dr. Michael Brown muttering ‘it’s grievous’ over & over again. Have you ever heard of the web site NewsWithViews.com? They have a particularly delightful article by Coach Dave Daubenmire of Pass The Salt Ministries who despises all gays and wrote something called ‘Homosexuals are the real flakes’ in which he makes reference to ‘homos’, ‘sodomites’ ‘deviants’ & yes, ‘God-haters’. I just love those nutty xtian religionists, the Jesus Victims, they are so proud of their hate!
Oh yes, I am family with both.
Coaah Daubenmire (not really a coach now) should look to his own house before condemning others…(I assume you know about his son). He is a buffoon, and easily enough dismissed.
Brown…sadly, he has a real following. Slightly less odeous than Daubenmier, but, he is a nutcase. But even he makes my point when you think about it.
He wrote a book (a tome actually) called “a queer thing happened to America” and the Christian right was excited about it before it came out, the way we might be if we knew someone like Evan or Savage etc. was writing a book. Brown is seen as a GIANT among the nutbags. He is a Christian convert from Judiasm (always a huge + in their book) and very anti gay.
No publisher would touch his book.
Not even the normal right wing religious publishers.
Nobody. Denada. Zilch.
He had to self publish, and is CONSTANTLY trying to push the book, which he admitted, sounding tearful, he had hoped would ‘change the cultural tide’. He cannot give the damn thing away half the time, and begs $ promising to send copies to “people of influence” in government if you send him so much $.
Pathetic. And yes, the “its grievous” over and over gets old, but……oh hell, I admit it, its ENTERTAINING!
Before anyone says “why the hell did you start listening?”. Well…I had a good reason. If you want to know ANYTHING about the GLBT community, listen to these shows. They pay more attention to us than we do! They OBCESS about us, and follow developements with a small town anti discrimination ordinance with the passion of fanatics (which they are).
Now…it is just fun to listen to.
The operators of this site are right. We have passed the tipping point. But, I did not really believe it till I heard the FREAKS on the other side admit it. And they do, as a rule, admit this, and the ‘woe is me’, ‘the homos are taking over america’, ‘do people really thing (gasp) lesbians make good moms? a majority believes that!?’ hand wringing, after a lifetime of hearing “we are put those queers back in the closet” “we are going to reclaim america”, etc. etc. (and the residual freaks…folger/porter, DeMar, etc of the 7 mountain movement) are all the shriller as they see the rest of the freaks facing reality.
It can be Gruesome, but oh…it can be so nice to hear them panic as they see the writing on the wall.
I just hope the panic doesn’t turn into violence.
For a few, truly unstable individuals, it could…
but, I don’t see it in any big way (even one instance is to many). As gay rights spread, homophobes tend to incread hate crimes. This has been seen in England and here in the US lately. But, mock them as I do, I dont see the fundy Christians being the main problem with violence.
Sad as they are, the TRULY think they are doing what they do to stop our rights for our own good. And their view of God calls for opposition, not violence. A few nutcasese out there claiming the faith exist, but, the vast, vast majority of conservative ‘Christians’ are not violent. Far from it.
And, if you, like Devin and I (and a lot of my GLBT friends I have found) listen to these shows, you will note in any case that the most common advertisers are for debt relief agencies, ‘nightskin’ (a beauty product for…mature, ladies) AMAC (the uber conservative alternative to the AARP) and other such adds aimed at the, well aged, audience, who are the biggest group who still buy into this anti gay, anti lesbian crap.
It’t hard to hold that gun or knife steady while trying to hold onto that walker or cane. (again, not that the vast, vast majority of this crowd would even think of this, even the loathsome Brown is very clear that he would totally comdemn any such action, which in the end would only hurt their cause in any case)
The good news? Wait 8 or 10 years. A lot of stations that carry this format are already planning for what to replace this ever shrinking audience with…and homophobic Christianity just wont sell like it does now.
The audience, well…wont be there.
Good point, Gene. I really had thought much about what the demographics are for xtian radio listeners. I do feel though that the majority of listeners are older white women. Do you ever listen to Steve Arterburn’s New Life Live? I correspond with him frequently & whenever they have a caller bemoaning the fact that their son is gay, I always write something on their Comments line at the site, trying to convince them that there are such people as gay xtians. I don’t think they believe me but I keep trying.
wow…you correspond with Arterburn? Can’t say I go that far. But, I do know that yes, the fundys read the other comments, so at least someone like that knows (on some level) that they are not alone, and that there is hope for their kid…even if they cannot bring themselve to embrace real hope (acceptance of who they are) for the false hope these “christians” offer.
I looked into it, and its a slim majority white women, and both the men and women tend to be white and older than most Americans. A lot of African Americans do listen however, and they are often younger.
Gene, yea, I’ve been on a first name basis with Steve Arterburn for a couple years now. He doesn’t write to me that often but he knows who I am. I like to suggest books he might like to ride as he is cooling his heels in an airport. I’ve been trying to get him to read Frank Schaeffer’s books. I don’t just leave Comments about being gay (they used to flag any Comment that used the word ‘gay’ as needing to be vetter first before it was shown. The word ‘gay’ was like a trip wire. I objected to Steve & they stopped doing it); I also Comment on the fact that I believe ‘Every Man’s Battle’ purity seminars are a complete scam & that the answers to callers on their show are aimed at well-to-do Yuppie types who can afford expensive seminars.
I loved what you had to say about Michael Brown & his self-published book. I read a review of the 700 page tome & the reviewer said that one whole 40 pg. chapter was just reprinting stuff from NAMBLA. Sure, he really ‘loves’ gays. Sure.
Err, I mean “books he might read” not ‘ride’. Also ‘vetted’ not vetter’. Do you follow what’s on Focus on the Family? They’ve got the patriotic lying weasel David Barton on today. Focus is lamenting that school children don’t know the ‘truth’ about our (xtian) history. Sorry for the typos – it shows what happens when you are typing too quickly at work!
Interesting Devin…especially the part about your complaint getting them to remove the anti gay rule about the word “gay”
I avoid FOTF because I think they are just..well..over. Also, because they are just so boring, and behind the curve on most gay news. David Barton I know of. He is beneith contempt.
I do at least give Brown credit for this (and this alone); he believes the crap he says (I think). Half of the FOTF group are just there for the paycheck.
If we can keep these types out of the white house for 5 or 9 more years, get one more vote on the Supreme Court, and just let the movement of the culture continue at its own pace (look at how much has changed in 2011 vs 2001!) I think these people will fade into a state of “small bitter minority” status. They wont go away, and will even hold sway in a few places (alabama, West Virginia, South Carolina). The honest ones, know this.
Go to Al Mohlers blog (connected to the Southern Baptist seminary) and read his own words. They see the writing on the wall
Gene, yes, I read Mohler’s ‘communications’ weekly & he really did seem dejected about the NY victory for marriage equality. Unlike Chuck ‘Mr. Manhattan Declaration’ Colson. And Focus must be going thru a lot of conflict internally because Daly thru in the towel as concerns marriage while Minnery & some of those guys are wishing Dobson was back, blasting away. I dunno though about them fading away. They’ve merged with the teabaggers after all & that keeps them alive. They’ve got Michele Bachmann & Rick Perry on their side & they are full of life. I’d like to think that you are right though, that if we don’t end up with a Republican president in 2012 & do get a few more chances at the Supreme Court, we will be able to see some real forward movement on things like ENDA.
Gene– has anyone ever challenged mohler on his “we’ve lied about the queers” stuff?
Oh GOD yes…hard. He had to put out a statement in which, to his credit, he stood his ground. Explaining all the time (of course!) that gays are sinful and that even if it is not a choice, the choice to “act on” our ‘gayness’ is and we need to repent…blah, blah, blah.
I knew this would happen when I first read (and fell out of my seat) his statement.
Hard to underestimate the fire/s**t storm that statement caused him. It kills me to say it, and it sure as hell was no endorsement of us or our rights, but I DO have to admire his standing by his statement. He lost a LOT of support/love/respect for saying what (little) he did.
And yet…
did he apologize?
No. He held he ground and said we had been lied about, and unfairly protrayed. He did not say sorry for saying the truth. And he paid for it. I must admit, I was impressed. That was not what the far right fundys want to hear
ah, you mean to us? Actually, his very statement can be taken as an apology of sorts…a mea culpa, and warning to the fundys not to make the same mistake.
the words “I am sorry”…never saw those, but…yeah, knowing him from his writings, I would consider his words an apology of sorts.
We’ll see where his “integrity” takes him.
oh, dont expect it to take him anywhere.
Where it takes US, is to a place where we can say “Oh hell…even Al Mohler admitted we dont choose to be gay, so stop the ‘you choose this life and dont deserve any rights’ bullship.
It was THIS realization that pissed off the fundys. He, in a way most fundamentalists understand more than a lot of gay people do, just knocked a lot of the underpinning out from under their main argument;
that we “choose” this “lifestyle”. Thats why they freaked.
