Igor Volsky at Think Progress has put together a handy little list of responses from conservative groups and news sources, reacting to the revelations that Marcus Bachmann’s clinic treats patients with discredited, disproven harmful reparative therapy techniques. They’re all painting the Bachmanns as victims, of course, because conservative groups tend to traffic in professional victimhood, as it helps them raise ca$h. Tony Perkins’ reaction is adorably delusional:
– FAMILY RESEARCH COUNCIL: “Apart from Washington, D.C., and homosexual interest groups, the majority of the country will view Marcus’s work for what it is, a ministry of hope. Pointing men and women who struggle with same-sex attractions to God isn’t ‘a discredited form of therapy,’ it’s the path to sexual healing.” [Tony Perkins, 7/13/2011]
Oh, the poor thing. He actually believes that the “majority” of the country’s reaction to Pray Away the Gay therapy is positive, rather than somewhere between shock and guffawing derision. That’s sad and pathetic, but it’s also evil, as Tony’s “path to sexual healing” ruins lives and destroys families.
NOM’s reaction is predictably whiny:
– NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR MARRIAGE: “We’ve been following with concern the organized efforts by gay activists to demonize Michele Bachmann’s husband. Greg Quinlan, President of Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays and Executive Director of Equality and Justice For All comes to Mr. Bachmann’s defense — and to the defense of others who are not given a voice.” [NOM Blog, 7/13/2011]
Greg Quinlan is a known liar. While this does not, obviously, disqualify him from being quoted adoringly by groups like NOM, as Religious Right spokespeople often are more than willing to lie, as they believe they are serving their deity by doing so, out here in the real world it’s sort of a stain on his character. He also trips himself up regularly by suggesting that “ex-gay” is a hated sexual minority, deserving of special protected status under nondiscrimination statutes, which seems to fly in the face of the Pray Away The Gay world’s contention that people like Greg are now, ahem, heterosexual.
If any grown-ups decide to complain about the Bachmann story, I’ll let you know, but for now, go read the rest of Igor’s round-up.

What is Maggie Srivistav’s organization doing involving itself in something that has nothing to do with marriage?
I normally try to maintain a decency clause in calling out b.s. but Tony Perkins is a f*****g idiot if he thinks that “Pointing men and women who struggle with same-sex attractions to God isn’t ‘a discredited form of therapy,’ it’s the path to sexual healing.” [Tony Perkins, 7/13/2011] What an IDIOT it may be the path that some people with bad interpretations of what the word of God really says is not discredited. I am quite certain that if this was a few years ago he’d say the same thing publicly that African Americans were less than white Americans and that slavery is biblically endorsed. If anyone can see the love of God in Tony Perkins actions, words then they don’t know what love is.
As long as these mouth-pieces don’t have to have real jobs and can rely on the fools to keep sending them money to live (and live well) on, we’ll keep hearing this crap. AND as long as they don’t have to ante up and give REAL proof of success, they’ll just keep getting their money while the religiously deluded keep supporting them. Must be nice to get the good life just for constantly telling people what they want to hear – asinine as it may be.
“Pointing men and women who struggle with same-sex attractions to God isn’t ‘a discredited form of therapy,’ it’s the path to sexual healing.” [Tony Perkins, 7/13/2011]
Let’s face it, if God really wanted to change someone from gay to straight, it would be a trivial task for the creator of the entire universe. He could do it blindfolded and with both hands tied behind His back.
If God were to choose only one person to change, wouldn’t Alan Chambers be the likely candidate? And yet Alan admits he has not become a heterosexual, and says “The opposite of homosexuality isn’t heterosexuality, it’s holiness.” For how many more centuries will people continue making excuses for a God that is either completely disinterested in humans, or non-existent. Well, they will probably continue for as long as some clever people are able to continue milking the biggest delusion and/or fraud ever perpetrated on humanity.
elsa, and all of her nom de plumes are lies. It’s ironic–and hypocritical that she would accuse Wayne of being a liar.
If god has changed people from gay to straight how come he never cures amputees?
Because amputees aren’t morally defective, and can manage light switches with their teeth.
“If god has changed people from gay to straight how come he never cures amputees?”
Because “God works in mysterious ways,” and His plan for some people’s lives is for them to be amputees.
While we’ve all heard people talk excitedly about how God has been busy cooking up fabulous plans for THEIR lives, they fail to mention how God is simultaneously devising clever ways to make the lives of others as horrific as possible – often from birth. Here are two examples of God’s clever plans that I recently read about:
1) – A 13-year-old girl with a rare genetic condition causing her to go fully blind, and she is already beyond the point where the strongest glasses can be helpful.
2) – There was an article (with photos) about conjoined twins (also known as Siamese twins). The twins, now in high school, are joined at their heads, with no plans to ever surgically separate them due to the risks involved.
Good one, Ben.
Richard, surely there must be some amputees somewhere that god hadn’t planned to be amputees just as there are allegedly some gay people somewhere that god hadn’t planned to be gay?
This getting even better. Let’s up the stakes a bit.
The PFOX wesbsite says “thousands, if not millions” “have altered their sexual orientation with varying degrees of satisfaction and varying perceptions of success.”
Oh miss Becky? where are you?
BTW, that word “varying” provides an hole that you could easily drive a very large truck through, and which according to Miss Becky just could not be true, becuase people can change.
let them.
These people are disgusting. And I love the stupid “reasoning” employ as to why a supposedly omnipotent God would allow the suffering he does. And they have NEVER explained why, since their god supposedly has created all, he would create someone who is such an abomination in his sight.
These freaks deserve every bit of ridicule that comes their way.
You know, it’s been a very long time since God finished creating the universe, so now He is probably extremely bored, and is always looking for new ways to entertain Himself, and simultaneously sharpen His supernatural skills. Tinkering with human genetics is a perfect way to do that. He can create blind children and conjoined twins, for examples, and then He can sit back and be entertained by His handiwork. Likewise, He can create homosexuals, then inform them that, in order to avoid eternal hellfire, they must be ashamed, and pursue futile attempts to pray it away, and/or live lonely loveless lives.
You have to be totally awed God’s ingenuity, power, and sense of humor, don’t you. I guess that’s why so many people love Him, worship Him, and build magnificent architecture to honor Him.
I honestly cannot beleive that Sprigg, Perkins, La Barbra et al still put stock in the horseshit they insist on peddling. These are (to a certain extent) intelligent people (I figure they must be to have somehow fashioned a living out of what they do).
Sometimes I think I can see the knowledge behind their eyes that what they are spouting is total bollocks. They are losing, and they know it. Furthermore, you can see their hearts are no longer in it. They just keep going because by now they do not know how to do anything else, and of course they are making quite a tidy penny from not doing very much at all.
I like to simply be amused by their occasional vomitous rantings whilst I watch them slowly collapse in on themselves like a poorly made souffle.
PHx.
Richard @#13 – Perfect insight and well stated Richard. If you don’t mind I’m going to save that and use it myself when the opportunity arises.
Priya, be my guest (don’t forget to correct the typos). And thank you.
What does the president have to do with the current subject CC?
Cheif, now you’re just posting random items. You should have Youtube for that.
