During a stop in South Carolina on Tuesday, Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann wished the late Elvis Presley a “Happy Birthday.”
The problem: the message from the conservative congresswoman comes on the anniversary of the death of the “King of Rock and Roll.”
“Before we get started, let’s all say ‘Happy Birthday’ to Elvis Presley today,” said Bachmann while speaking in the Palmetto State. “We played you a little bit of promise land when we pulled up. You can’t do better than Elvis Presley.”
Elvis was born on January 8, 1935.
There is a weeklong commemoration every year in Memphis, from whence I am writing you, recognizing the anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death. Indeed, that is why Elvis has been in the news this week, just as he is in the news during this week in August, every single year.
It’s even more offensive that she said that racist thing about “taking our country back” [come on, you know it's got racist overtones] in the same breath as her “birthday” shout-out to Elvis, considering his musical legacy.
What a trainwreck.

I think you just insulted trainwrecks.
What does this have to do with the theme of this blog? Besides jumping on any chance to insult and demean your enemies in general.
Michele Bachmann is, you might have heard, in the news as a presidential candidate right now, and since we’re actually aware of the world beyond our corner of the universe, and since this blog exists to report news about these people, it fits.
Clarity achieved?
@ Matt.
It’s quite simple. This is the dillusional Loon from MN, that thinks we are of Satan, and wants to take any and all rights away from us.
Plus the simple fact that this person who wants to be President has gotten her facts wrong 85% of the time. Clearly, she’s not Presidential material.
@Evan Clarity not really achieved, and @Bernie, clearly indeed.
However, it still wreaks of “oh ya? well you’re dumb!” as a response to her threat of power over you. Really, it’s comparable to making fun of your math opponent’s grammar (if you could dream of a scenario where you have a math opponent… ). To me, it’s not unthinkable that someone would make a mistake like this – not knowing it was Elvis’ birthday. In fact, I can think of a few ways it could have happened. I would likely make a similar mistake (and do all the time). So what? It has ZERO to do with the your cause.
You confirm her power when you take the time to write blog posts that do nothing but make TWO look like it’s home alone with no one to talk to. And not without cost; from a macro level, this type of writing really ends up widening the already-large chasms between people and camps, and certainly does nothing to encourage the idea that we gays are capable of intelligent debate, can easily take a high road, and approach everyone with the same kindness and understanding that we demand of them.
Just sayin’…
You are obviously entitled to your opinion.
This story has been pretty much everywhere this afternoon, of course. You might take it up with HuffPost and JoeMyGod if you have time to go play in their comments sections.
Michele Bachmann doesn’t really receive much press here in South Africa but, from my Internet news feeds, it’s plain to see that the woman is no rocket scientist. Then again, neither was the last Republican president so maybe she stands a chance.
As for her wishing Elvis a happy birthday, when a member of my family dies, my mother stops celebrating their birthday and, instead, begins commemorates the anniversary of their death. Perhaps Bachmann does the same (although an explanation prior to the comment wouldn’t have gone amiss, surely).
Anyway, it’s now my turn to end off with “Just sayin’…”
@Matt, what a weird thing to get pissy about.
Are people still saying “just sayin’…”? That one really needs to go join “I just threw up in my mouth a little” in the compost pile.
You can say that again, Jared. We’ve been treated to two paragraphs of carefully crafted troll mumbo-jumbo.
@Jared
Right???
And, as I made very clear, what separates me from the other umpteen gazillion people writing about this is that I actually happen to live in Elvis’s town, and believe me, Memphis people are NOT HAPPY with Bachmann for being so stupid about this.
Still not quite as bad as when she said she has the same spirit as John Wayne Gacy.
Remember this is the same moron who said that the Census was….drum-roll…….Unconstitutional!!! Maybe if she tried reading it for once in her life. ps…so what’s her beef with the census anyway?–besides the desire to keep everyone as ignorant as she is.
@ Matt you have to see outside the box, learn to think outside of it. YES we do not like her because she lies about us and detests us and about 85% of what she says about anything is full of untruths. Truth Wins OUT, get it?
And also she messed with Memphis and Elvis. Ergo, I win.
Yeh. Yeh! Juss say’in. 0:-/)
@Matt
Matt, Matt, Matt…
Trolls belong under bridges or in caves. It’s not good for trolls to interact with real people. t hurts their feefees. Now go to bed!
Oh and Long Live the King!
INDEED TONY! Long live the king! And all Memphis music. s**t, we really do it the best anyway…
