I don't know anything about Islam, but it's my understanding that most of the oppressive 'stuff' against women is an ancient cultural carryover and is not from the Koran. Conservative Christians need to realize (of course they won't) that parts of the Jewish and Christian Bible(s) are also based on ancient and outdated cultural beliefs and need to be ignored, which they do anyway, except the parts used as excuses to persecute gays and subjugate women. I went to a concert at a Presbyterian Church yesterday (Mozart--it was GREAT!), and while waiting for the concert to begin, I was leafing through one of the Bibles in the pew and came upon a section in the Hebrew Bible where one was supposed to sacrifice 'a spotless male goat' for some special occasion; I forget what it was. How many fundo Christians and Orthodox Jews still sacrifice animals for the prescribed religious rites. As far as I know-- *none*! That was good to hear.
