If Linda Harvey had her way, I surmise, gay people really wouldn’t be allowed to do much of anything. Unfortunately for her, lots of the best doctors in the country are gay — indeed, I would venture a guess that a gay doctor has cared for Linda at some time or another, which means, according to her logic here, that she has been influenced by the Cootie of Gay. Here is Linda Harvey of the surely-about-to-be-named-a-hate-group Mission America, commenting on how the sexuality of physicians is more important than the health of children:
How do you feel about open homosexuals tending to your child in a health care setting? Do you think these folks provide good role modeling at a time when your child is very vulnerable? I was thinking about this recently when I heard that Children’s Hospital in Columbus has a homosexual employees group called NCHARGE, which stands for Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Advocates Representing Gay Employees. The meeting minutes of this groups reveal that they participated in last June’s gay pride parade, that they participated in a health expo on adolescent health this summer and that they’re concerned about same-sex partner benefits. They’re also planning to be identified with rainbow lapel pins.
But let’s say your eleven year-old has broken her leg rather badly and needs to be in the hospital a few days, which would you prefer: a nurse who’s proud of her lesbianism, who has rainbow identifiers on her work clothing, or a nurse who does not?
I would like to suggest that parents think long and hard about this. If you want your children to admire people who proclaim a homosexual lifestyle, they’re involvement with your child during a hospital stay is sure to be an influence. And let me be clear that folks involved in these behaviors can be certainly competent workers but they are tacking on to their workplace identity one that is highly offensive to many people and can be erroneously influential to children who won’t, or shouldn’t, see the whole picture of how this behavior really manifests itself.
Here’s what parents can do: select your pediatrician very carefully, first of all. There are a few homosexual doctors treating kids, there are far more nurses, LPNs, technicians and other health care workers in these lifestyles so you may want to consider writing a letter that you file with your pediatrician that should your child ever be hospitalized, you do not want your child to be treated or cared for by one of these members of the Children’s Hospital gay employees group except in the case of an emergency situation. But for routine in-hospital care where contact with your child would be required, your values should be respected.
Um, yeah. Along the same lines, I would also suggest that Fundamentalists stay true to their beliefs and only see doctors who believe in Creationism. I mean, it’s not like evolution is the freaking foundation of biology or medical science or anything. Here’s the video if you’re bored to death or something:
Dan Savage points out that Linda does make an exception to this rule, which truly makes me question her commitment to Sparkle Motion*:
Harvey notes that straight parents should clearly communicate that it’s okay for gay and lesbian doctors and nurses to treat their children in “emergency situations,” which can be seen as either tremendously gracious on Harvey’s part—”Well, okay, that lesbian nurse can save my daughter’s life”—or as the kind of wishy-washy moral relativism that is destroying the moral fabric of this great nation.
ANYWAY, so now you know. Fundamentalists really need to be more concerned with who their doctors and nurses sleep with at night, rather than whether they have the expertise required to care for their sick or injured children. Priorities!
*Oh, my god. I had never thought of that before. THAT is who Linda Harvey reminds me of! If you haven’t seen Donnie Darko, watch this clip, then Netflix the movie.

love your comments about creationism, serious question though being one of those brit people do americans seriously believe in this mission america stuff to me it stinks of pink triangles. keep up the great work
It’s hard to imagine the Linda Harveys of the world ever agreeing to share the planet peaceably with LGBT folks. Framing simple coexistence as a zero-sum game guarantees that, for any tiny gain in the perceived normalcy and integration of LGBTs, Harvey and crew will claim victimhood.
After all, they whine, how despicable is it that they be required to work cooperatively with gay folks in government, most corporate environments, and the military? How dare anyone make it difficult for them to screen LGBTs out of out of the media, public services, or entertainment they consume?
Sorry, Ms. Harvey, large groups of people aren’t going to self-colonize and withdraw from the general public just because you and your friends don’t like them. Reasonable health care providers aren’t going to offer services by hetero-only employees any more than they’re going to offer white-, or male- or Catholic-only service providers.
If that’s what you require, I’d suggest looking to many Amish communities as examples. Form your own colony, create your own financial systems, hospitals, schools and businesses. I’d caution you, though: I’ve personally met Amish folks who have accepted medical care and educational support from the outside world you would assume they despise. They often make part or all of their income selling hand-crafted goods to outsiders.
The Amish also accept that some of their young adults will leave their closed communities. In the same fashion, you’ll need to accept that life with your colony will be unworkable for your kids/grandkids who happen to be LGBT (and those who believe that LGBTs are fully human). You can start preparing to lose them to the outside world now.
So, go ahead… get started, Linda! You are perfectly free to create your own gay-free world. Just don’t expect to impose it on the rest of us, or all of your family.
[...] on every street corner. For example, Harvey’s latest screed warns naïve mothers about the “threat” of openly gay doctors and nurses treating their children. “There are a few homosexual doctors treating kids, there are far more [...]
All I care about is that the doctor (or nurse) is competent. That’s it.
I hope that this Harvey woman never has the misfortune to breed. God help any man who finds her attractive! If she has, then the best thing I can wish on her is to have an Openly Gay child. Remember one thing Harvey, Heterosexual people make Homosexual people. Finally, I hope and pray that the next time you need urgent medical attention, that you are left to rot on a gurney in a hospital because of your backward, bigoted, ignorant beliefs. People like you deserve treated with the total contempt you deserve.
Callum, she IS married and does have kids.
Actually most kids would probably be comforted by a health care worker with a rainbow pin. The pretty colors could be a nice distraction, and if they’re that young, they probably haven’t a clue as to what it means anyway (but of course it’s ok if they do).
And how the hell would harvey know that there are ‘far fewer homosexual Drs treating children’ ? I assume it’s the same percentage as the rest of the general population. BTW, gay male nurses (and Drs) would probably be MORE compassionate and involved in your child’s health care than most straight guys would.
I just had a nice fantasy of linda harvey as a patient of Nurse Jackie (Edie Falco) and being read the riot act by Jackie when she starts spouting her homophobic b******t. Nurse Jackie should flush linda’s ear down the toilet–on second thought, her tongue would be better. >:-)))
So, Linda,
What about the openly gay barrista who got you your coffee this morning? Or the openly gay shopkeeper who sold you your morning paper? Or the openly gay gas station attendant who filled up your car? Or the openly gay chef who cooked your meal last time you went out? Or the myriad of others who came into contact with you, looked at you, breathed near you?
Where will it end? Are you going to stop going out, just in case you run into one of us? (here’s hoping…)
I never thought of this as a problem. Is your doctor gay? How about: is your doctor competent? Does one really think that in a hospital setting, the child is really going to give a flying f**k about the sexual orientation of the doctor or nurse? Apparently, this she-wolf does. We have to respect the “values” of the parents – yea, like any loving parent in the rather traumatic setting of having to put your child in a hospital wants to do any thinking about the caregiver’s sexual orientation. Wow! How much lower can they go. Next up – is your undertaker gay? Do you want your or your loved one’s corpse touched and dressed by a fag undertaker? He might influence their spirit in the afterlife. These scum-sucking, bottom feeders make me sick. The low-life values they hold are anything but admirable or righteous or holy or any of the other sanctimonious b******t they can attribute to themselves. It’s hard not to outright hate them.
My husband had an aunt like this but with African Americans. She would not go to a restaurant unless she knew the staff was white. Nevertheless she brought her own silverware in cast those people might have touched it. She drove around in an RV so she had a toilet. She would even drive to the farm to get her milk, eggs, etc so those people didn’t touch it. Truly pathetic.
Tim W, when it reaches that point, she’s gone beyond bigotry, she’s a complete nutjob.
Linda does make an exception to this rule, which truly makes me question her commitment to Sparkle Motion*:

BINGO! Thanks for proving Linda’s point!
my, my, my —this sounds like hate.
