The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is meeting in Baltimore today. According to NPR and the Associated Press, the main focus of this meeting will not be on poverty, income inequality, or economic justice, not on racism or immigration reform, not on feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, or healing the sick. Instead, the bishops’ primary focus will be on attacking loving same-sex couples and families and the freedom to marry that they deserve under our secular Constitution, and perpetuating the lie that marriage equality somehow represents a threat to religious liberty and an attack on Christianity. Not at all surprising, but nevertheless, absolutely disgusting.
UPDATE, courtesy of Igor Volsky at ThinkProgress: The bishops “unveiled a new website — MarriageUniqueForAReason.org — to compliment the [USCCB's] ongoing effort to enshrine their anti-LGBT religious bigotry into civil law ‘promote and defend marriage as the union between one man and one woman.’”
Furthermore, in a report delivered to the conference, Oakland Bishop Salvatore Cordileone, chairman of the USCCB’s “Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage,” stated that the Catholic Church’s fight against civil marriage equality “affirms the inviolable dignity of every human person.”
On what planet exactly, sir?

“And Jesus wept.”
Most of these guys are as queer as a 3 dollar bill. Unbelievable!
So do/did all the children who were raped and abandoned by the hierarchy of this ‘brood of vipers’ church. If Christ were there, he would overturn all of their tables and drive them all out for ‘turning his Father’s house’ into a house of hate and hypocrisy.
WAR IS PEACE.
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY.
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.
INEQUALITY IS DIGNITY.
Dear Conference of Catholic Bishops: I am not a Catholic and I can say with confidence I never will be one. I am not subject to your dictates and whims and your interpretations of the Bible. I am a Christian and I am a citizen of the United States. I was raised to believe in the separation of church and state. I firmly believe that churches that continue to violate that separation should lose their tax exempt status. I firmly believe that the Catholic church, beset by scandal, surrounded by people in need, could find much better uses for its resources. I have been mostly quiet on these beliefs, but you have inspired me to now share them at the top of my lungs will all around me.
Sincerely,
Michael Jarrett
It makes me sick to my stomach to think of all of the money my parents threw into the collection basket every Sunday. Now that money is being used to pay lawsuits for pedophile priests and to keep their son a second class citizen. Whatever happened to helping the downtrodden? My parents AND Christ would be appalled …

what’s the truth?
Wayne, these are not “Catholic bishops”. They are ROMAN Catholic bishops. Although that subgroup is the largest in the US, it is not the only Catholic denomination. Others (Old Catholics, Lob. Catholics, Syrians, etc) are not so weird or misguided. Some of us have actually read the Bible.
This is so sad. My consolation is that bishops do not equate with Church. They do have power but have lost their moral authority within the church. This will cost them dearly.
The Roman Catholic Church has a long history of perpetrating unspeakable atrocities. The “inquisition” in Spain during the Middle Ages, during which people were tied to stakes and burned alive, slowly dismembered tied to racks, or huge, slowly turning wheels for suspected heresy.
The inquisition was conducted under the authority of the “Holy Father” the “infallible” Pope in Rome.
Trials to determine “guilt” of heresy were sometimes conducted by “ordeal,” for example the accused was force to put his/her hand into a pot of boiling water. The church leaders said that if the accused was innocent “God” would protect their hand from being scalded. Or course, none of these blood thirsty, religious monsters offered to insert their hand into a cauldron of boiling water to demonstrate
the validity of trial by “ordeal.”
Just think what we would have missed without the Catholic Church! But at least now, their crimes are lighter than before. Just stuff like child rape, abuse, covering up these sex crimes while seeking to demonize same sex relationships between loving, mature, consenting adults.
The Church, has also done alot of good charitable work. But a secular, humanist organization can do the good things without inflicting atrocities on people. Hurrah for “Secular Humanism” a phrase which is nearly an expletive when uttered by some religion “Christian” leaders–Protestant and Catholic. What a hoot!
