Won’t somebody please stop the victimization of Fundamentalist Christians in this country?
Trina Vodraska and Janelle Sievers, who are engaged to be married, said planning for their June wedding took an unexpected turn during a taste-testing appointment Thursday afternoon.
“It shouldn’t be a gay or straight issue. It’s a people issue,” Sievers said.
“They came in and she introduced herself, and I said, ‘Is this your sister?’ (She said,) ‘No, this is my partner.’ I said, ‘OK,’ and I asked them to sit down and I said, ‘We need to talk,’” said Victoria Childress, who runs her cake baking business from home.
“I said, ‘I’ll tell you I’m a Christian, and I do have convictions.’ And I said, ‘I’m sorry to tell you, but I’m not going to be able to do your cake.”
“I said that was fine and I appreciated her being honest,” Vodraska said.
“I don’t think either one of us knew what to say. We were just shocked,” Sievers said.
Childress said it’s her right to refuse to do the cake.
“I didn’t do the cake because of my convictions for their lifestyle. It is my right as a business owner. It is my right, and it’s not to discriminate against them. It’s not so much to do with them, it’s to do with me and my walk with God and what I will answer (to) him for,” Childress said.
All good Christians know that the first question St. Peter asks people at the gate is “You never baked a cake for a gay, right? RIGHT?!”
And then they get to go to heaven. There’s video at the above link, and it’s kind of worth watching, for hilarity purposes.

Yes, Ms. Childress. . . discrimination is probably within your rights. However, you should keep in mind that a lot of our Christian friends will find it within their rights to boycott you and your low-class cake bakery, spreading the word to everyone we know.
Try that one if the couple were a hetro black couple. “Oh, I’m sorry, it has nothing to do with YOU, but my walk with God – I can’t bake a cake for you, ah, er, coloured people.”
Oh well….I hear her cakes are dry and tasteless anyway…
Your walk with God………yes. Why is it that God is always the same bigoted a*****e that His walkers are? I’m sure that you have solidified your position in heaven and they are licking their chops waiting for you to arrive. God has really poor taste.
@ Marcus—LOL!!!
I assume as a god-walker she also realizes that she cannot be a business owner and have male employees, as no woman can have authority over men.
In fact, I’m not really sure how she can get away with baking cakes at all, given all the crazy sh*t you’re not allowed to do in that Lividicus, the same book that advocates killing of teh gays.
Actually, in many states she would not have the right to refuse to bake the cake for the couple. Assuming she is in business offering her services to the general public, I think that would be a violation of the public accomodations laws here in California. Depends where she lives.
Would she, I wonder, have turned away a Pagan, Jewish, Hindu or Muslim couple?! In NOM”s demand for so-called “religious liberties” protections they NEVER insist on the ability to discriminate on the basis of religion, just sexual orientation, even down to goods and services (as in this example), healthcare, housing, etc.
Go with someone who will bake it and therefore deserves the business, rather than this bigotted half-wit.
why is this news? She isn’t legally obligated to bake their cake unless she cashed their check. I don’t agree with her, but that’s her right.
sure it’s your right to destroy your business by severely limiting your business by keeping the biggest business oportunity out of your business and thus removing profits from your bottom line. It’s not very smart but it is your right sure.
This happened in Des Moines, Iowa, about thirty minutes away from where I live. Iowa does allow small business owners to refuse service, but anyone with business sense knows that is the quickest way to put yourself out of a job. Hope she hadn’t invested too much time and money into what she does…
There is a hilarious quote from a book I read not too long ago that says “you know you’ve created God in your own image when God hates all the same people that you do”
I am a christian (which is terribly embarrasing sometimes, when those other so-called Christians are such doo doo heads) and I am also a baker. I will bake those girls their wedding cake for free!
People are saying she isn’t legally obligated to produce the product asked. However, if you watch the video on the website, they point out that Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity discrimination IS illegal in housing, education, and public accommodations. This means that, depending on the wording, they likely CAN sue over this.
Yes, this was illegal. You can’t refuse service on grounds such as race, gender, religion, age, disability pretty much anywhere. Several states also include sexual orientation. Iowa among them
I cant wait til God judges this brawd straight to hell!
She is a private businessperson, and as such she DOES have the right to refuse service to anyone. If a gay person came in looking for a job, or if she was renting an apartment, that would be different.
Now, having said that, I think her reasoning is flawed. Whatever happened to hate the sin but love the sinner ? I don’t think Jesus was asking a lot of people is they had been good Jews before he ministered to them. He tended to hang out with the ‘wrong’ crowd, as memory serves.
Uh, Carol….try that argument with “Oh…I wont make a cake for Jews”
or “Oh, I wont make a cake for a black couple”
and the stupidity of your “she is a private business woman” argument is shown clear and simple
as per the “sin” (sic), she needs to find a decent, first class church that no longer is bigoted towards gay people. the Presbyterians, Episcopalians, Lutherans and United Church of Christ would be a good place to start.
you should do the same.
raise your standards.
you have NOTHING to teach or offer here, only opportunities to learn, and later, apologize to us ALL
As an Iowan who officiates weddings, I would sooner tell people to go to the field and order a pie from a cow..
