Is this what American politics has come to? A frothy mix opposed to birth control who wants to break up same-sex unions? I’d love to know our readers thoughts on Iowa. Does Santorum stand a chance in winning the nomination or ascending to the White House? Will he campaign with a dead fetus? If he does win, will you leave the country? Will he be a flash in the pan or is there more to his candidacy? And how about Newt’s bitter defeat speech?
Let us know what you think.

I still cannot make up my mind whether Santorum is hopelessly insane or just very, very, VERY stupid. Though at the end of the day I suppose it amounts to the same thing.
I’m not terribly concerned b/c pat robertson and mike huckabee won iowa without even coming close to the white house…
Frothy Mix – Bring the Sweater Vest back.
And that’s the end of his legacy. Calling it now. His rhetoric won’t work in New Hampshire, which will knock his momentum out. And he’ll drop out, even if not as fast as some who already have.
I don’t think he or Romney have a snowballs chance in hell of beating Obama (but then this dumbass country did give bush enough votes to enable them to steal 2 elections). Santorum is as mad as a hatter and Romney, despite his many flaws, is also a mormon. Even the fundagelical wingnuts don’t trust mormons.
Every other candidate got a turn at being the not-Romney of the month, so it was Santorum’s turn.
“No doubt in the weeks to come the American press will be all over Rick Santorum. His anti-contraceptive, anti-woman and anti-gay views will become common knowledge. Anyone who doubts this man is thoroughly morally repulsive will see abundant evidence to prove the point. Let’s pray, for the sake of the nation, that the Santorum craze will be over quickly. I trust in America’s ability to reject dangerous extremists.”
~Anne Rice
Santorum’s 30,007 votes add up to 1.95% of the 1.5M Iowa voters in the 2008 election.
I look at it this way: Iowa sent Steve King to Congress, even though he’s too extreme to ever win a state-wide contest. It’s largely King’s fans who voted for Santorum.
Ricky still has no organization, no funds as of yesterday (was reported to be using a borrowed Iowa pickup truck instead of renting a car).
Bottom line? Not a surprising outcome, and it also doesn’t make him remotely viable for long.
the sweater vest really shows off his shirtsleeves.
Iowa is a bit of a paradox. It’s progressive overrall, but its conservatives are particularly insane. I wouldn’t worry.
I’m hoping he goes away soon. I keep saying “no one can be crazy enough to vote for the Frothy Mix” and people still vote for him so I dunno. He could never beat Obama. America isn’t that insane.
Emma said, “He [Frothy Mix] could never beat Obama. America isn’t that insane.”
Oh, I don’t know. Remember, America elected George Bush to a second term.
@Richard, I’m just trying to be optimistic…
My friends and I over here in the UK are aghast that ANYONE would vote for this obvious lunatic, let alone 30,000 people.
Have Iowan’s lost their collective mind?
Appalling.
Actually Richard, there’s quite a bit indicating that Bush wasn’t reelected.
So there are 30,000 bat-sh*t crazy people in Iowa… I wouldn’t be at all surprised how many registered Republicans ended up throwing up their hands in disgust and refusing to vote.
