This, from the man who can’t seem to go five minutes in public without making all kinds of noise about how much he hates gay people. In an interview with Bill O’Reilly, Rick Santorum said the following things:
O’REILLY: To rescind — rescind it after a licenses already given. That’s a big deal.
SANTORUM: The federal government would have to pass a constitutional amendment and if the Constitution says that marriage is between a man and woman, then things that are inconsistent with that would not — would be inconsistent with the Constitution so –
O’REILLY: Would you be doing that if you were elected president? Would you be campaigning for a constitutional amendment in that way?
SANTORUM: I would — well, if you pass a constitutional amendment that says marriage –
O’REILLY: So would you — would that be — would that be in the forefront of your — of your administration?
SANTORUM: As you know, Bill, if you’ve been following me out on the trail, I haven’t been talking a lot about this. Although I strongly believe in it. What I’ve been talking about as I did last night on my acceptance speech where didn’t talk about this issue, I talked about the importance of getting this economy going and talked about my grandfather and coming here for freedom. And this is the fundamental issue in this campaign is whether government is going to be big and obtrusive and telling people how to manage their — their lives or — and are they going to support the basic values of faith and family that allow government to be limited and allow our economy to be strong. Those are the things I talked about and did across Iowa. I’ll be talking about those things here in New Hampshire.
Guess that’s just more of his “not talking about gays.” My guess is that, with his surprising showing in Iowa, one of his advisors might have suggested that he cool it with the anti-gay weirdness, if he has a prayer of winning anything else ever, for the rest of his life.
Igor at Think Progress has the video.

I don’t think he can cool it. The man is obviously obsessed with it and probably any number of other things and people with obsessions can’t just turn them off any more than a horder can just stop hording.
So Santorum says: “the fundamental issue in this campaign is whether government is going to be big and obtrusive and telling people how to manage their — their lives.” If that is the fundamental issue of his campaign, why the hell does he want to intrude into the lives of LGBT people?
He has had a fixation on what he thinks our relationships and our sex lives are for years.
There is an ever-so-slight and unconstitutional problem with a Federal Marriage Amendment: it could never dissolve same-sex marriages performed prior to passage. Such an amendment, should it ever pass, would come into direct conflict with the section of the Constitution that specifically forbids Ex Post Facto laws. So, should the right wingers ever get their wet dream of a marriage amendment passed, all existing same-sex unions would still be valid. If the Federal Government tried to dissolve these unions by citing any hypothetical Federal Marriage Amendment, then this could become the first instance in which the U.S. Supreme Court would invalidate an amendment as unconstitutional (and that would be with a strict interpretation of the Constitution that conservatives love to tout). So maybe a Federal Marriage Amendment could be our Trojan Horse towards equality.
First, I don’t think Frothy here counts gays as “people” more like “things I’m attracted to but shouldn’t be”, and second ya as soon as they pass the federal marriage amendment and it gets struck down for strict interpretation they will scream about activist judges since activist judges means,to them at least, that the judge rules how they don’t like.
When asked a question about practical matters/real problems, the man always answers in philosophical/moral values/dogmatic terms. He is absolutely true to himself and his beliefs. Problem is: he’s somewhat whacky in his approach to things. He never has said that he hates gay people; he just hates homosexual acts. Now why people like him are so concerned with what other consenting adults do is the question? Mind your own f*****g business! I have no idea what he would imagine homosexual people should do to satisfy their natural urges, needs, and desires. He satisfies his doesn’t he? Most other hetero’s satisfy theirs according to their natures, right? Why dump on us because you think you have the answers, including the major one: we CHOOSE to be gay. If you’re half as intelligent as you think you are, try looking at us as other human beings, individuals, citizens. We really do deserve, under the law, everything that you and all those other bigots have. Try opening that mind of yours to the reality of life and other people.
