As Joe said, this is unreal. Here is Rick Santorum’s former chief of staff, Robert Traynham, who is a black gay man, defending Santorum’s bigotry.

Wow. My hubby is fond of saying “we see what we want to see.” I can’t think of a more clear demonstration of that than this clip. Traynham should read Dan Savage’s recent SLOG post in response to the NY Times’ accusation that he is merely opposed to Santorum’s stand on marriage. It is NOT Santorum’s marriage stance alone that makes him so despicable. It is his determination to vilify, deny integrity and dignity and PUNISH all LGBT as the “free” expression of his extremely repressive religious beliefs.
Jaw-dropping moment: not knowing Santorum’s position on DADT. Love Matthews under-his-breath expression of surprise at Traynham’s lack of an informed opinion, “I thought you might.”
his friend is gay AND Black! goodness, he gets a two-for-one token! (“Toofer” from 30 Rock, anyone?)
“I’ve never heard him say anything like that.”
So Rick never insulted him to his face, and that makes him an okay guy?
This guy is made of better stuff than I am. It eludes me completely how one who is gay can not only work for but defend someone with Santorum’s views. Did he miss all the times Santorum talked about how the Supreme Court was wrong to remove the states’ sodomy laws clearly indicating that he sincerely believed that gay people should be arrested and punished for having consensual sex? After all, that was all those laws were used for, not the sodomy performed by loving straight people like Santorum (?).
Sometimes the obliviousness of LGBTs in the Rethuglican party is truly jaw-dropping. Mr. Traynham is a case in point. Does this man ever LISTEN to what his boss has to say about LGBT people? Or is he so deep in denial he is hearing what he wants to hear? I suspect the latter. I know if I had a boss that said that sort of stuff I might have to remain silent to keep my job (it is a recession and could actually understand if he wanted to keep working), but NO WAY would I endorse this guy or act like we were best buds on national TV.
Blah blah, three different ideologues sitting around talking about how we shouldn’t let ideologues run the country or make our laws. hmmmm..
I really am sick and tired of the Gay Community wanting to legislate their sexual preferences. I don’t go around seeking employment, special treatment, or telling everyone that I am a heterosexual. I don’t use my sexual orientation as a source of information to get privileges or rights. The Constitution wasn’t created to make laws on sexual preferences The Bible Is the standard. God instituted and created marriage. A marriage is between one man and one woman. Homosexuality was and always is from the lust of the flesh. Being filled with ALL unrighteousness. Because they worshiped the creation and NOT the creator. God loves the homosexual but he hates the sin. Sin is sin. How come we aren’t talking about that. We all know how God feels about Homosexuality. God will NOT be mocked. God did not make a mistake when he made male male and woman woman. It is again because of hurts, wounds, actions done to or against a person and not knowing their identity as a man or a woman and choices that they have made. I have spoken to many homosexuals and the root of the majority of their choices come from being sexually, physically and emotionally abused and from that traumatic experience they made choices known or unknown to them conscientiously. That was a point in their life with what they chose to identify who they are as a person by what was done to them. It breaks my heart for them but it isn’t a reason to SPIT in the very face of God Almighty.
Don’t feed the troll. Ignore it and it will starve.
Oh Lordy, Cindy, you do need a better God. Mine is perfectly fine with gay folks, He having made us.
And this, dear, is just your blatant lie: ” I have spoken to many homosexuals and the root of the majority of their choices come from being sexually, physically and emotionally abused and from that traumatic experience they made choices known or unknown to them conscientiously.” (And lousy English, don’t you mean “consciously.” Yes you do. Otherwise your statement makes no sense; well, it doesn’t anyway.) But I dare say I know “many” more gay folks than you ever did, and not a one ever said anything remotely similar to what you say. Egad, lady, get a grip. And a conscience, consciously, and present it conscientiously. Thanks.
Oh yah, as for whether Democrats or Republicans are gay-friendly, I dare say that with major Democratic constituencies decidedly anti-gay, such as African-Americans, Latinos, Catholics and union members, I find the Democrats not much different than Republicans, except that they are more circumspect as to what they say to whom and when. That Democrats are more crafty in telling us gays “We like you,” doesn’t mean they really do. They’re, um, evolving, like everyone else in the nation. And frankly, I don’t just need Democrats to like gay folks, but I need Republicans too — I need every single last person in the nation, so the debate might be over and not waged on forever, for I don’t want my being lauded or disparaged depending on who is in office. And we gay folks are winning on this regard, even if the political leadership hasn’t quite caught up. Still, when I started voting 35 years ago Democrats were just as anti-gay as Republicans; one side has perhaps evolved a bit faster than the other, and both have a long way to go.
Cindy, you clearly do not know what you are talking about but you have managed to concisely collect a whole buncha myths about us & apparently you swallowed them whole (snicker), Anyhow, let’s just say the lie that all gays became gays because of abuse, well then, your God would know that & take it into consideration. After all, your God is s’posed to be just, so how could he punish a gay person for something he or she had no ability to avoid? As it is in the real world, we have all been designed in diverse ways & since God made gays he must be very pleased with us.
As my German husband says, Cindy…
Blah. Blah. UND blah.
Posters like ‘Cindy’ will gleefully lie, distort and misrepresent anything they can about us – while claiming to be ‘moral’ which is just damned funny.
Really, all they want is that ‘special right’ to discriminate against LGBT Americans because they can’t legally do so against anyone else (anymore).
Cindy said “I don’t go around seeking employment, special treatment, or telling everyone that I am a heterosexual. I don’t use my sexual orientation as a source of information to get privileges or rights.”.
Sweetheart, you get employment, special treatment, privileges and rights solely because you are heterosexual. That is wrong, gays and lesbians deserve the same rights you have and that’s all they’re asking for.
Cindy said “God will NOT be mocked”.
Oooo, I’m god and I’m so big and nasty, OooOoo, I’m going to get you and spank you real hard because I’m so wonderful and loving, Ooooo. /mock
Cindy, god is mocked constantly by so called Christians who use his to bash people they don’t approve of, to judge others, to interfere in the lives of others whom they don’t know, know nothing about, and who have done them and intend them no harm.
Christians have slaughtered each other for centuries over whether god wants hymn #103 sung in French or in Latin. Christians have slaughtered others for centuries for witchcraft, judasim, isislam, and homosexuality.
as far as I can tell, a certian class of Christian mocks god as a way of life simply by existing.
Cindy, I’ve corrected your comment, somewhat, with a remix:
I really am sick and tired of the arrogant sanctimonious Christian Community wanting to legislate their sexual preferences. You go around seeking employment, special treatment, or telling everyone that you are a heterosexual Christian. You use your sexual and religious orientation as a source of information to get privileges or special rights. The Constitution wasn’t created to make laws on religious preferences. The Bible is not the standard. A god did not institute and create marriage. A marriage is between two adult human beings. Heterosexuality was and always is from the lust of the flesh. Being filled with ALL unrighteousness. Because they worshiped the creation and NOT the creator. God loves the heterosexual but he hates the sin of reckless breeding. Sin is sin. How come we aren’t talking about that. We all know how God feels about Homosexuality because He is allowing us to win the culture war. God will NOT be mocked. God did not make a mistake when he made male male and woman woman couples.
It is again because of hurts, wounds, actions done to or against a person and not knowing their identity as a man or a woman and choices that they have made.I have spoken to many arrogant sanctimonious Christians and the root of the majority of their choices may come from being sexually, physically and emotionally abused and from that traumatic experience they made choices known or unknown to them conscientiously. That was a point in their life with what they chose to identify who they are as a person by what was done to them. It breaks my heart for them but it isn’t a reason to SPIT in the very face of homosexuals.Sad. I’m sure it’s hard to admit that your friend is a bigot, but for this man not to know Santorum’s position on these issues is just appalling.
Hey Cindy, I’m sick of you Christians legislating your sexuality onto us. You don’t agree with gay marriage–don’t marry a gay.
Troll Hunting (v, Nor.):expose the lies perpetrated by occasional opportunistic hairy, cave-dwellers.
Cindy, “I have spoken to many homosexuals and the root of the majority of their choices come from being sexually, physically and emotionally abused and from that traumatic experience they made choices known or unknown to them conscientiously. ”
We hear this a lot and I can’t figure out who this sub-population you are referring to actually are. No one I know cites abuse as the reason they are LBGT. I don’t know about the groups you mix with – it could be that statistically speaking, more members of fundamentalist families are abused. It wouldn’t surpise me.
It comes up a lot and is a central part of the lie perpetrated by NARTH and the religious loons who claim our sexuality can change by intention. You don’t know me or my life. I identify myself with how I feel in my heart about who I love, not with what I do. How many times does that have to be stated for you to take it that it is true?
Lastly, I absolutely LOVE the Freudian slip at the end of your last sentence I quoted
You have to love a troll, folks – small furry criters with gooey lumps where there used to be a brain. That’s why they live in caves. Fly my prettys!
Wayne, if you’re reading this please put an expiration date to post comments on an article to avoid trolls like Cindy and the like.
