Newt Gingrich says yesterday that same-sex marriage is paganism. Presumably unlike having a wife and a mistress.

Yes, well, Paganism, being a religion, more ancient than Christianity, is well protected by the First Amendment’s “no restrictions on religious belief” language. And Christianity, of whatever freewheeling hedonistic sort he engages in, is enjoined from becoming the state religion by the same Amendment. And he seems to be wholly unaware that the Constitution specifically prohibits a “religious test of office” — and the most important office of the land is that of Citizen. One wonders what Constitution he is aware of, and from what nation. For it surely is not America’s.
There are actually quite a few of us LGBT Pagans out here you know. Why should we fight for recognition in religions that treat like dirt when there are plenty of non-Abrahamist spiritual paths out there that value us as human beings? That said, Newt is a moron.
I’m quite pleased with my pagan, poly, same-sex marriage, thank you very much.
Catholics have been persecuting non catholics whenever they have had the power to do so for millennia. Pagans should expect no tolerance. And Newt is the latest one they have converted to “the one holey and true faith”, so you would expect him to be out (like San Brownback and Randall Terry two of their other newest converts) preaching the good news to the rest of us.

Christians spend so much time whining about alleged “bashing” of their religion yet they have no problem crapping all over the religions of other people. Typical hypocrisy.
Oh yes, Paganism, On every full moon, all my gay friends and I like to get naked and dance around a bonfire…oh wait, thats what we do at Burning Man.
I was reading books by Sybil Leek and Hans Holzer before most people had ever even heard the word Wicca. I was interested in it, but back then (late 60s), being a Witch was like being gay; trying to find others of like mind and interest was like searching for dragon’s teeth. Today I’m an Epagapalian, as the fundos call us.
BTW – Happy Imbolc (Feb. 2nd) to all Wiccans and Pagans who read this site. ;)
Bruce Garrett,
That’s a beautiful short post.
:)
I, too, have a lot more respect for my fellow Pagans than I ever will these bigoted blowhards.
Howdy!
