“What does your Daddy do all day at work?”
“Complain, mostly. What does your Daddy do?”
“Saves lives. He’s a heart surgeon.”
“Oh wow. Today my Dad is really, really upset about fictional characters in the Star Wars video game. He’s getting paid for this.”
“Weird.”
After first going after Girl Scout cookies, Family Research Council president Tony Perkins is now attacking the game Star Wars: The Old Republic for allowing same-sex relationships.
Uh, okay, well all right then. Here’s the full quote from Tony:
In a new Star Wars game, the biggest threat to the empire may be homosexual activists! Hello, I’m Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C. In a galaxy not so far far away, Star Wars gamers have already gone to the dark side. The new video game, Star Wars: The Old Republic, has added a special feature: gay relationships. Bioware, the company that developed the game, said it’s launching a same-sex romance component to satisfy some complaints. That surprised a lot of gamers, since Bioware had made it clear in 2009 that “gay” and “lesbian” don’t exist in the Star Wars universe. Since the announcement, homosexuals have been celebrating the news, but parents sure aren’t. On the game’s website, there are more than 300 pages of comments–a lot of them expressing anger that their kids will be exposed to this Star Warped way of thinking. You can join them by logging on and speaking up. It’s time to show companies who the Force is really with!
Totally worthwhile way you spend your life, dude.
Right Wing Watch has the audio.

“I don’t mind if our child fantasizes about blowing up planets and killing millions of people, but if he sees two men kiss, there’ll be hell to pay!”
Of course, you know who the real victim in all this is don’t you? George Lucas. The poor guy just can’t catch a break. For years LGBT gamers and sci-fi fans request that he include some kind of gay content in his universe. Now, when he acts like a good capitalist and responds to his customers’ requests and needs, Mr. Perkins, who I don’t even believe is a fanboy, complains.
Alas, Mr. Lucas does have more money that Mr. Perkins will ever have, so I don’t think he’ll suffer too much.
Perkins is a Harkonnen who should be sent to Arrakis to be eaten alive by sand worms. Oops — different SciFi movie.
Bantha fodder, he is. Perkins needs to get a real job, immediately.
As someone that plays Swtor and uses the forums. This is false, they are more upset over the fact the game was down last night for 4 hours than they are about homosexuality being in game. In fact I cant even find the thread that he is talking about. I find that mmoers are pretty progressive.
lol. Well when you play as the girl character in Pokemon NPC’s usually interact with you in the exact same way as if you play as the boy, so that leads to some same-sex flirting at least.
And Blake, that doesn’t even take into account two of the ferris wheel dates a player can choose in the latest two games.
Other Bioware games like KOTOR, Mass Effect and Dragon Age also feature gay characters and same-sex relationships. So do Bethesda’s Fallout: New Vegas and Sykrim
MMO players, practically by definition, interact with a huge variety of people during their playtime, which for many gamers is anywhere from a couple to several hours a day. That’s a s**t load of people. Sure, I remember all the “f*g” and “Chuck Norris” jokes from Barrens Chat like any other. But that can happen easily when you consider that that’s where entry level (beginners) hang out. I never really had a problem with other gamers in the long run.
Basically put, all this does is satisfy people who wanted to see it happen, be they gay people playing gay characters all the way down to the straight yaoi fangirls that would totally play a guy just to do this now. Trust me, it will happen. If you doubt, you do not know yaoi fangirls :P
Anyways, it hurts no one. These people are playing with LGBT players all the time, let’s acknowledge reality and let the characters in on the fun, eh?
I checked Bioware website – couldn’t find what he suggests is there.
It’s just the typical geekdom fare – deeply involved and esoteric discussions of various aspects of the game. A tiny amount of discussion of the same sex options but more related to how they options should work and who they should be activated and/or subsequently revoked.
Not an ounce of parental shock and anger.
Tony – please please read this: you are bringing your own organisation into disrepute – “Star Wars turned my kids gay” – Huh? Way to go to make FRC the object of ridicule.
Does this idiot REALLY have nothing better to do?
Obviously not.
