You see, back when the SPLC was primarily concerned with the most overt racists among us, it was fine, because Matt Barber was not weaned in a time when it was socially acceptable to wear one’s racism on one’s sleeve. Now that the SPLC has broadened its scope to include other vicious, hateful, dishonest groups like the Family Research Council and his friend Porno Pete’s Americahs for Truth on their list of hate groups, it’s not okay, because they’re espousing an “extremist left-wing agenda.” You know what else used to be an “extremist left-wing agenda?” That’s right, the Civil Rights Movement.
Same dishonest, bigoted arguments, from the same people, different minority.

I remember that very well. Actually, it was often called communist back then. You often heard it said the coloreds were being stirred up by the communists. Or else it was the New York Jews. Something else you often heard were people pontificating about how that didn’t have any problems with the older coloreds who knew their place. It was the young black power militants who kept stirring things up. Everything would be fine if it wasn’t for the communists, or the Jews, or the militants.
It’s a theme I’ve seen creeping into the dialogue of the more “respectable” conservative columnists lately. People like Rod Dreher. Most gays just want to live their lives quietly…it’s only the militants who keep stirring things up with things like same-sex marriage and gay-straight alliances. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
