According to a quick Wikipedia search:
“In the 2007–08 Annual Report, clinic income totaled $374.7 million and miscellaneous operating revenues $68.9 million.[42] Approximately two-thirds of the revenue is put towards the provision of health services, while non-medical services such as sex education and public policy work make up another 16%; management expenses, fundraising, and international family planning programs account for most of the rest.”
According to MSNBC:
“Planned Parenthood said the Komen grants totaled roughly $680,000 last year and $580,000 the year before, going to at least 19 of its affiliates for breast-cancer screening and other breast-health services.”
Yeah, we’re talking about almost $400 million a year versus a little over half a million.
Puts things into a little bit more perspective.

Also, Planned Parenthood only refers people to other physicians for mammograms. I do not know the process for cervical cancer screenings.

@Richard That $680,000 goes a long way when it comes to screening, and we’re talking about uninsured/underinsured women here. My sister is in her fourth week of chemoradiation for anal cancer that went undetected for months and I for one hope you never have a close relative that has to go through what she’s dealing with right now. Yes, Richard, when even one case of cancer goes undetected it really does “put things in a little bit more perspective.”

I have no intent of denying anyone’s personal suffering. I believe very strongly that there needs to be a unified way to help provide coverage for uninsured or underinsured. I think what Obama is attempting to do is a great start, but obviously I have certain reservations about some provisions of the health care mandate.
And it’s not like the Komen Foundation is going to give the money to something entirely unrelated, like the NRA or something random. They just put it somewhere else, into cancer research, or other grants.
Planned Parenthood provides about 1.8 million cancer related services each year. If you were to divide up that grant money equally, it amounts to about $2.70 per service. In real life, the grants provide larger amounts of money to more localized projects, like equipment and whatnot. But in it’s entirety, the Komen money constitutes 0.00125% of their income intake.
Dale, I am very sorry to hear about your sister. It’s a difficult situation no matter what. I sincerely wish you and your family well in the coming weeks.

Richard, its irrelevant what percentage the Komen money is. What’s important is that before many women were getting cancer screening who will no longer. You can try to trivialize it all you want, but if I was one of those women who could no longer get breast cancer screening it would be a VERY big deal to me. Every life is important Richard, no matter how you want to trivialize them.

This is too bad. I contributed to both these organizations. I guess I’ll just double up on my Planned Parenthood donations. There are times when Planned Parenthood saved my life and the lives of my friends.

Oh yeah, Pat. God/dess forbid that women should be able to have control of their own bodies. Would you be willing to adopt and support any fetus a woman would be forced to carry to term?
Richard (the "Wing-nut")

So, in the context of control over one’s body, both male and female, why is abstinence perpetually ruled out? It’s not like premature physical intimacy is a necesity in life. It would be better to practice self-control than to destroy human life. Personal sacrifices, if you would even consider it one, for the greater good. And one’s own good, at that.

Richard and Pat… what about the women/families who ARE married, but might be finishing college, or are trying to limit the number of children they have? What about the families on welfare or who are struggling and realize having more children is irresponsible?
Planned Parenthood isn’t about unmarried people who are young and sexually active. It’s all about PLANNING PARENTHOOD, for all stages of families. Abortion is a very small part of what they do, in fact most of what they do is to prevent the need for abortions.
Planned Parenthood provides such a wonderful service to the women (and men) out there. To lose such a large chunk of funding because of something that is such a small part of their work is truly sad. The women who won’t have proper cancer screenings now, that is the disservice. I really wish people would look at everything Planned Parenthood does, and how their main goal is to prevent the need for abortions, not encouraging them.

Richard, it’s none of your business why these women need abortions–and it’s none of your business why they don’t decide to abstain from sex. But in any case the issue we’re dealing with here is cancer screenings, not abortion.

Planned Parenthood is just one of many complicated pinions. I completely understand the need of regular folks, but the facts remain that yes, they still perform abortions. There has also been taped footage of several clinics acting irresponsibly and not reporting rape and abuse cases, etc.
On top of that, the contraception industry as a whole has had a large part in fueling this modern notion that intimate activity only costs as much as the contraception one uses. To them, there is no toll on dignity. They’ve made a killing by exploiting peoples’ biological urges, instead of maintaining a status quo of responsible conduct.
Lastly, there is always natural family planning, which is entirely free. The most effective form of natural family planning actually has comparable rates of effectivenesss to both barrier and medication based forms. No one should sacrifice principals for expediency; there is always a way.

Richard the WN:
Natural family planning doesn’t work consistently. The “contraception industry” hasn’t fueled any modern notions. Women coming to realize that having control over their own bodies, and the cultural realization that sex was for pleasure and bonding rather than solely for reproduction created the need for improved methods of contraception. If you want to limit abortions Richard, you should be on the forefront of excellent sex education of our youth and working for cheap and effective birth control access for everybody, SO THERE WOULD BE NO NEED FOR ABORTIONS.
Richard we are headed for 7,000,000,000 people on this planet. This planet cannot support 7,000,000,000 people. As a species and for the sake of every other species on the planet, we need to CURB our reproduction. Birth control will never be 100% effective, but its effectiveness can be very high. Let’s you and I agree to support effective birth control, vasectomies and tubal ligations for folks so that WE WON’T HAVE TO HAVE ANY MORE ABORTIONS. Deal?

Most importantly, there is NOTHING WRONG WITH ENJOYING SEX. It is NOT merely a way to procreate for heterosexuals who do it, and doing it with as many (willing) partners as you wish will only harm someone if they have unsafe sex, or buy into the disproven idea that sex, while WONDERFUL between two people who plan to be monogomous for life, can ONLY be wonderful between to people who plan to be monogomous for life. Somestimes, its just fun, and there is no need to worry about the expense/care of a child/or procuring of an abortion or dealing with an unwanted pregnancy just because two people want to enjoy the pleasures of sex.
I have not asked, are you American? I admit I am really curious to hear the answer to that.

The religionista wingnuts claim to want to prevent fetuses from being aborted, but what they are REALLY after is preventing sex. They want to control who has it and with whom, when, where, how, why. Religion is by its nature authoritarian and fascist. One of the first facets of humanity that authoritarians and fascists try to gain control of is sexuality, because if they can control your sex they can control society. Tell these wackos to worry about their own sexual activity, not that of the rest of the country. WOrry about your own abstinence. Funny it is mostly older men who fret so over what others do with their private parts. It’s all about perpetuating the patriarchy, not saving fetuses.

Exaxtly! Notice how Richard’s comment demonstrates that:
“So, in the context of control over one’s body, both male and female, why is abstinence perpetually ruled out?”.
Abstinence is NEVER ruled out – you are a liar. What is ruled out is abstincence ONLY. You have to lie about this because you’re all about preventing sex whenever you can. Religious conservatives are uncomfortable with anyone having sex and want to eliminate all sex which isn’t for procreation in which case they consider sex a necessary evil. Screw you Richard, we’re going to enjoy sex for sex’s sake whether you like it or not.
I said “Every life is important Richard, no matter how you want to trivialize them.”
Pat said “…And that’s exactly why some people refuse to support PP.”.
And by refusing to support it they’re shooting themselves and their goals of minimizing abortion in the foot. Very little of what planned parenthood does is abortions and if it weren’t for their contraception based family planning services there’d be far more abortions than the few Planned Parenthood is responsible for. By refusing to support planned parenthood you’re increasing the number of abortions that happen, not decreasing them.
