She writes for Glamour:
Imagine finding someone you love more than anything in the world, who you would risk your life for but couldn’t marry. And you couldn’t have that special day the way your friends do—you know, wear the ring on your finger and have it mean the same thing as everybody else. Just put yourself in that person’s shoes. It makes me feel sick to my stomach.
When I shared a picture of my tattoo on my Twitter page and said, “All LOVE is equal,” a lot of people mocked me—they said, “What happened to you? You used to be a Christian girl!” And I said, “Well, if you were a true Christian, you would have your facts straight. Christianity is about love.” The debate resulted in a lot of threats and hate mail to people who agreed and disagreed with me. At one point I had to say, “Dude, everyone lay off.” Can’t people have friendly debates about sensitive topics without it turning into unnecessary threats?
I believe every American should be allowed the same rights and civil liberties. Without legalized same-sex marriage, most of the time you cannot share the same health benefits, you are not considered next of kin and you are not granted the same securities as a heterosexual couple. How is this different than having someone sit in the back of the bus because of their skin color?
. . .
We all should be tolerant of one another and embrace our differences. My dad [country singer Billy Ray Cyrus], who is a real man’s man, lives on the farm and is as Southern and straight as they come. He loves my gay friends and even supports same-sex marriage. If my father can do it, anyone can.
This is America, the nation of dreams. We’re so proud of that. And yet certain people are excluded. It’s just not right.
Good going, Miley.

No. We can not have friendly debates on who counts as people.
Otherwise, very nice.
Agreed, Pat. Still, I’ll take it! :-)
I would think by now, ppl. Would have learned not to hate. . How would you feel if ppl were saying all this about or to your son or daughter or any1 you LOVED.
5…4…3…2…1…
That’s me counting down the seconds until the Religous Righters start demanding all “True Christians” must now burn her cd’s, dvd’s, boycott all products she endorses and movies/tv shows she appears in, labels her intolerant, and starts producing headlines like “Miley Cyrus’ War On Religion!” and…well, you know the drill.
Good kid. Hope she can handle the backlash.
I’m actually kind of wondering whether Hannah Montana supports marriage equality… I’m still convinced they’re actually different people.
Richard, why do you call yourself a ‘wing-nut’?
Another thing, are you a Christian?
Jessica,
I started calling myself a wing-nut (in sarcastic quotations.)Because I’m actually a very moderate conservative. I just go straight for the wing-nut title because it seems any amount of conservativism elicits ire here. I’m cool with that though.
And as for the second question no, I’m an atheist.
Richard,
OK, fair enough. When I used to go on the scene, I had a friend who was a Thatcherite. Honestly! She was dead against gay marriage and teaching being gay as equal with straight in schools. As you can imagine, she stuck out like a sore thumb, and was always having to defend her political view.
She was an OK person really. We got on,just disagreed on politics.
My Dad, however, was a true blue, dyed in the wool Tory. He was (in many ways) a believer in free market capitalism and a strong proponent of the doctrine of self help. He didn’t like the overuse of social security (‘they shouldn’t be given hand outs when they can work’).
He was also a strong believer in law and order, thought criminals should be birched and put in the stocks, and hanging should be brought back.
Yet he couldn’t see anything wrong with ‘men marrying other men, if it makes them happy’, because they weren’t hurting him or interfering with his life and his family.
My Mum is more of a weak atheist, doesn’t believe there is a god. She is also a Gaitskill/Wilson Labourite. Hates the Tories and all they stand for. She sees nothing wrong with gay marriage, and was the only person on the street not to contribute to street party for the Queen’s
(cat stood on the keyboard and it accidentally submitted commit. But I’ve almost done)
My Mum wouldn’t contribute to the street party for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee because she is a Republican. She thinks no one should be privileged because of where they were born.
Me? I believe in live and let live. People can do what they like as long as they don’t make me join in, or stop me from doing it. If anything, politically I am an anarcho-Communist, so I suppose, according to the US political definition of wing-nut I hold an extreme view so I am one, too.
That’s all.
Thought I’d written it;
My Dad was a strong atheist, declared that there was no god.
I have to disagree with that, Pat. I thought it was pretty clear that she doesn’t think that who counts as people and who should have what rights is open to debate- the third paragraph makes that evident; what was being debated was ‘Christianity and “Christian morality”‘ versus ‘Christianity and Christian love’.
