The Queen of Talk, Oprah Winfrey, interviewed a few Orthodox Jewish women in Brooklyn. She asked these moms what they would do if they had a gay child.
Oh my! The pathological denial was astounding. They sat there befuddled and then dissembled as if they were fundamentalist Christians. Maybe this is wishful thinking, but after all the Jews have endured, the last thing I would expect is for them to insult another beleaguered minority by pretending that LGBT people do not exist in their community. Has history taught us nothing?

I think that Oprah or Lisa Ling should interview Chaim Levin, a gay man who grew up in the Orthodox Jewish Community. Levin wrote a letter to Oprah today that I hope she or her producers check out.

He was constantly being harassed by the Pharisees for healing people on the Sabbath, NOT stoning the adulteress who clearing had it coming according to ‘the Law’, saying things like ‘the Law says…., but *I* say…..and then countermandering the legalism with love and compassion. To address one of your points, many studies place us at approx 5% of the general population, right wingers grasped onto a survey done sometime last year placing us at 1.5%, however the information was garnered by going door to door. I certainly would not tell a a stranger at my door what my sexuality was, as he could after all be a crazy like yourself.

There is one powerful independent government department that is concerned with monitoring the nations health. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) which was set up in 2003, has within it, a department concerned with HIV and STI’s. They boast being one of the best suvellance and monitoring systems in the world tracking HIV. They describe gays as, “A social and cultural diverse group of men.”, who are at greatest risk and predict 100,000 HIV sufferers by 2012. Notice the major characteristics are social and cultural, not genetic.
The HPA use a multiparameter statistical model, surveillance data, including data collected from the National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles (NATSAL) to estimate the size of the pool of men who have sex with men (MSM). In 2009 they estimated this to be about 500,000 men.
Moreover, an authoritative government report, The Integrated Household Survey (IHS) of 450,000 households late in 2010 concluded only about one in 100 men were gay. Gays, bisexuals and lesbians make up about 1.04 percent of the total population of some 60 million. The raw figure is 624,000 homosexual persons. The report also states gays were twice as likely to have a university degree and nearly half were in professional management jobs. So much for a persecuted minority!
Stonewall heavily criticised the report stating gays were reluctant being open about their sexuality. However, a 2011 survey of homosexual men by Gaydar discovered that only one in ten kept their sexuality completely private, thus contradicting Stonewall’s claim.
If we conclude there are about 500,00 to 600,000 homosexual men in our society, and now there is compelling evidence for this, we should reflect on the fate of homosexuals in the light of the 2012 forcast by the HPA that 100,000 gays will have contracted HIV. This literalry means that one-in-six gay men will be so afflicted, and the problem is getting worse.
There is a terrible legacy for the gay community. Attempts by government to control the contagion appear to fuel it. They may discriminate in favour of gay rights, but in doing so abandon health and safety concerns.
In September 2010 The Office off National Statistics (ONS) issued a correction notice entitled Measuring Sexual Identity. An Evaluation Report and made criticism of the earlier assessment in the Women’s Unit RIA report. It urged caution because the findings were based on studies utilising different methods, differing sample populations and measuring different dimension of sexual orientation. It combined responses from a set of questions about sexual behaviour, sexual attraction and sexual identity both in the past and present.
On the other hand, the ONS considered that the IHS estimate of 1.4 per cent LGB is broadly consistent with other household surveys in the UK that asked questions about sexual identity. This is also consistent with previous research.
So, isn’t it time that a Conservative Government Minister stopped using the grossly inflated Stonewall figure, and reflect a little more on reality? Enhancing gay propaganda simply leads to the crude politics of despair and distrust.

Actually, Richard Rush, I think it is rather simplistic to assume that anyone who is obsessively homophobic must be homosexual. I am always suspicious of the motives of such people and yes, the anti-gay homosexual who is cowering in the closet is by no means an unknown phenomenon, but people can be obsessively, obnoxiously and vociferously anti-gay for other, and even less attractive, reasons. I even know of a couple of cases where homophobia has provided a smokescreen for criminal activity.
